"You've Gotta Hear This."

that subject sounds like spam, doesn't it? like i'm promoting my band, who are what the beatles dreamed they'd be. which is why i added the quotes.

anyhoo, some of you will have heard this question asked before, but i figured i'd open it up to the forum. in the course of listening to music, it's been my great fortune to stumble across a ton of songs that make me think, "man, people have gotta hear this!" so what i'm asking is for you all to share those songs which have given you similar reactions. could be obvious choices, could be something obscure; anything you think people just NEED to hear.

The song which just recently blew me away is the Trail of Dead's opening grand kicker, "Mistakes & Regrets". Shouldnt it be blasting out of every car radio, juke box and stereo?

Yes.

(Sorry I am a bit late with discovering that track, but I just burned the record off my mate's legally-purchased "Madonna", and that opening single is precisely the type of surprisingly tender teenage riot I need at that time of the year).

In my experience, songs which make me want to jump up and play them from the rooftops end up being either ones I never play again after the initial urge to share (sharing in general = bad) or tunes which end up being pumped from the rooftops eventually with no help from me.

Today's curmudgeonry c/o a St. Paddy's day spent spending my money to get other people drunk.

I think that Tim Hopkins needs to hear My Bloody Valentine's 'Blown A Wish' again.

And again.

And again.

I didn't realise the carpets in our house were in such a terrible state. I'll bear it in mind.

In the meantime, "Junkyard" and "Domestic Science" off the new Skitz LP (the LP's a new high-water mark in UK hip hop, I think) are my answers to the question.

The power-synth rush and feathery percussive patina of Ninotchka's "I've Got Wings" seems to generate delight whenever I foist it upon people, so I'll go for that one.

This was the song I was going to write about for the NYLPM/FT anniversary, but I got stuck and missed the deadline. Sorry, Tom. "Dead, dead good" won't do, will it?

Deadline? Nobody told me about any deadline!
