Donut etc.,

Why are the letters slowly disappearing from your current name one by one?

Also, why are you such a bitch about Maximum Rock And Roll? Do you secretly have something against the social dynamics of underground punk and hardcore? If so, this saddens me.

Inquisitive Ian, Monday, 27 June 2005 07:16 (twenty years ago)

aw man, you start this thread just when I'm about to head to bed?

a) entropy

b) there are several reasons to bitch about MRnR.. see that MRR thread. I have nothing against social hardcore/punk scenes.. in fact, I care about them enough such that I think MRnR *can* be seen as slightly distracting and detrimental to it as it currently stands today, but I stress "can", as I think even bands who are MRR friendly know that it's a semi-joke today. I'm just not into the same fundamentalist attitudes that purvey underground religious groups infiltrating loud underground rock music, that's all.

Sincerely,

Donut

Good Sir Donut.....

Why did the Reno, Nevada hardcore band 7 Seconds call themselves 7 Seconds? It there some deeper meaning to the name? Why also did Neney Cherry and Youssou N'Dour title a collaboration 7 Seconds? Is there some reasonant meaning to the concept of 7 seconds (as opposed to, say, seventeen seconds)?

Enquiring minds want to know.

Dear Donut,
Can Hawkwind and Brooke Valentine ever have a meaningful musical relationship?

Ned

Dear Ned,

I haven't heard anything by Brooke Valentine. In fact, I haven't heard any Hawkwind since 1979 for that matter. However, I'm not completely ruling out the possibility of a relationship. However, I suspect the only way a meaningful relationship as such could occur is if Valentine agreed to become Hawkwind's obligatory "drone babe" (also see Zia from the Dandy Warhols.) I don't doubt Valentine's ability to play tambourine, nor do I doubt her ability to expose herself. I have a few doubts about her willing to dance during extended rock drone noise james under paisley lighting wearing paisley clothes, but not enough doubts to damn the vision, if you will.

I think the biggest obstacle, really, is Hawkwind. Is David Brock still alive? Even if some bastard "ex-members" (i.e. "I was grooving on stage during that one gig in Toulouse back in 1977, therefore I was a member, and I also have a Micromoog!") reform "Hawkwind", I suspect the likes of Brooke Valentine would be the last place they'd look for a prospective "drone babe." She would most likely have to be a dealer.

So, in brief, Ned.. No, sadly.

Sincerely,

Donut

Dear Alex in NYC,

There was recently a thread on the forum of the official Kevin Seconds website at http://www.kevseconds.com asking that very question! The link is here: http://www.kevseconds.com/viewtopic.php?t=1261&highlight=7+seconds+origin , however, if you want the brief answer, acc. to Kevin Seconds himself, "We've come up with all sorts of silly stories on how we came up with the name, mainly to disguise the sad fact that we just don't have a very exciting story behind it's origins :)", However, in the book American Hardcore, the author ostensibly credits the origin of the name 7 Seconds to "a nuclear-armageddon term adopted from Frederick Forsyth's Day of the Jackal." acc. to a "bRaD" from London, Ontario, Canada.

As for the Youssou N'Dour/Neneh Cherry 1994 hit single "7 Seconds", I can firstly say that I doubt it has anything to do with the aforementioned band, and is merely a coincidence. As to what the title exactly refers to, I'm not sure, but I have an idea. On a cursory glance of the choruses of the lyrics -- "It's not a second, seven seconds away/Just as long as stay, I'll be waiting", more or less -- and also the verses of the song, referring to children being born, I'm guessing it's the average time it takes for a baby to complete its birth from beginning of the exit of the mother's womb to be completely outside it. I can't vouch for the accuracy of that time calculation as I've never had a child, much less have witnessed a birth, and furthermore much less unleashed a stopwatch to time the birth.

To answer your final question, Rocking together while walking together is entirely possible, although in our age, we would just have to plan it, unless there happens to be a rock concert happening in NYC while I'm there (or in Seattle, if you are ever here) exhibiting much rock which we both agree to attend -- albeit, I'd guess there would be far more rocking than walking. That said, I don't care too much if you're into different bands -- I mean, no cause for such hatred, I'm just a different man. It's just a matter of pulling off the cover, and I will, too. We'll learn to understand with music deep inside, we'll have some possibility of making the world our unity plan.

This reminds of that I need to check tickets for the upcoming Shellac shows in late August at the Vera Project in Seattle. Even on my own, I plan to rock and walk by myself in that case at the very least, but will likely rock and walk with Matos and Kate Silver together.

Sincerely and Rockspeed,

Donut

Dear Donut,
Please rank the following songs:

Nitzer Ebb -- Murderous
My Life With the Thrill Kill Cult -- Sex on Wheels
Front 242 -- In Rhythmus Bleiben
Skinny Puppy -- Assimilate

Thanks in advance,

BB

Dear BB, the following is how I currently rank the songs:

1.PTP -- Rubber Glove Seduction
2.Front 242 -- In Rhythmus Bleiben
3.Skinny Puppy -- Assimilate
4.Nitzer Ebb -- Murderous
5.My Life With the Thrill Kill Cult -- Sex on Wheels

In the cases of the rankings of Nitzer Ebb and the Thrill Kill Kult, you just happened to have chosen the songs for which I particularly don't care that much. Had you chosen, say, "Backlash" and "Cuz It's Hot", respectively, they would have certainly ranked higher.

I would say the same about the Front 242 and Skinny Puppy songs, but they ranked higher anyway due to their more anthemic nature.

Which puts Programming The Pscyhodrill's "Rubber Glove Seduction" at a rather far away number one spot. I've always loved PTP's material, and you can't go wrong with robotically sung lyrics "Tick tick tawk, I am the kitchen clawk. Tick tick tawk this is my KNIFE! *bark* *barkbark* *bark* *barkbark* *bark*" The alarm clock and string samples over the plodding robotic stroll make this a relatively timeless Wax Trax! classic.

Yours Locking The Target,

Donut

Stop me if I'm wrong, but PTP (Al Jourgensen, Paul Barker and the Cabaret Voltaire gents) only did two songs, no?

And "No Name, No Slogan" by Acid Horse trumps them all.

M@tt

Dear M@tt,

I've never heard Boulder CO's Zephyr, but I'm sure a little online research could not hurt. They sound like a band that has some potential for some great and relatively lost nuggets. Colorado doesn't have a bad track record for classic rock. Well, at least, Denver's Sugarloaf are an outstanding example of this. Their first two albums, Sugarloaf (1970) and Spaceship Earth (1971), are great albums, half of each has very worthy tunes. Perhaps Zephyr were an inspiration to Sugarloaf? If so, I would reaffirm the recommendation to check them out. I'm not your boss, however, so I'm in no position to "make you" listen to them. She doesn't sound like she would either, if she's recommending a relatively obscure classic rock band from Boulder. In any case, go fer it, M@tt!

I'm not sure if PTP was Al, Paul, and The Cabs... you might know more than me here... But PTP actuall had THREE songs... (oooooh). Recently reissued on the Ministry Side Trax compilation, PTP finally issued their song used in the Robocop movie. I've always heard about their music being used in that movie, but I assumed it was either of the two original songs "Rubber Glove Seduction" (which was the one I thought it was) and "My Favorite Things".

As for Acid Horse, I do agree that the Al & Paul side of "No Name No Slogan" trumps all three PTP tracks... mainly because of the spaghetti western feel. It reminds me of the best of the Neon Judgement. The Cabs side of "No Name No Slogan" was sadly more generic and boring.. but this was when they had released, IMHO, their worst album Groovy, Laidback, and Nasty.

Dear Ned,

EXTREMELY different. You will get shot in certain parts of NYC (especially outside the current Village Voice editor's window, and the Acute Records headquarters) and other major European cities for even suggesting such a thing. And don't even think of confusing either of the two terms with Italogrime and Italocrunk.

Si, andiamo. Ehi, andiamo. Ehi, andiamo. Fermare quello shit. Andiamo proprio ora.

I believe PTP was just Al and Paul.

Interestingly, Donut's rankings are almost exactly the same as mine (just switch Nitzer Ebb and Front 242). The songs I chose aren't necessarily my favourites by those bands either -- for instance, I never liked Thrill Kill Cult, but I was interested in what you thought of them.

I would have ranked Acid Horse above PTP until two or three years ago. I started gaining a greater appreciation for just how unstoppable the beats in "Rubber Glove Seduction" are -- a cross between hard house and Thomas P. Heckmann (who in turn, has made a career out of reshaping "Murderous" and "Let Your Body Learn" into modern techno).

Dear Donut,

On Tuesdays Lisa and I go play trivia and invariably we lose. We're no trivia slouches, but we always get creamed by these teams of six brainiacs in the corner. Knowing that we're going to lose (and pay 5 bux entrance to do it), should we still play? At the nub of it, is it worth doing something if you know you're not best at it? Also, what should our team name be this week?

Sincerely,

Jergins

If you have fun playing it, and don't mind paying the cover, you should keep at it. I personally suck at Scrabble, but will not hesitate to play it if offered (although I wouldn't personally go out of my way to PAY to play Scrabble. I'd choose other games, but I digress.)

Your team name? Hmmmm. Is there a specialty in the trivia you partake in? Or is it general trivia?

Trivially,

Donut
