Another Allnighter (sexyDancer), Monday, 27 June 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

Get the Lee Perry double CD Dub Triptych from last year, which has the albums Cloak & Dagger, Blackboard Jungle Dub and Revolution Dub. Really amazing dub work, and the comp is pretty cheap.

is war ina babylon by max romeo great?
Yes yes yes!!!

I also highly recommend Little Tempo's Fire Blender album (read about it here), though it's as jazzy as it is dub, so it may not be what you're looking for.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Monday, 27 June 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

dr alimantado seconded. both albums on greensleeves are essential.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Monday, 27 June 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

The Upsetters Box from Trojan is also excellent.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Monday, 27 June 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

can i borrow that, when i finally return your stax box?

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 27 June 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

TWIN ROOTS "KNOW LOVE" !!!

Another Allnighter (sexyDancer), Monday, 27 June 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

You most certainly may borrow the Upsetters. Also, you should borrow the Trojan Roots Box. Its got some excellent torpor-appropriate tracks.

The Stax box has been a major part of the summer soundtrack over here.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Monday, 27 June 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

Everything suggested on this thread so far, esp "Know Love," Dr. Alimantado, Dub Tryptich, Pick-a-Dub and the Tubby comps on Blood & Fire.

Also George Faith's "To Be Lover" (both album and song) HIGHLY recommended.

Dark Horse, Monday, 27 June 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

i've been listening to african head charge's "off the beaten track" and getting really into that.

matlewis, Monday, 27 June 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

king tubby meets harry mudie vol 1-3
lee perry - arkology. if only for "make up your mind" by the heptones. also has that george faith song mentioned above on it.
joe gibbs and the professionals - no bones for the dogs

oops (Oops), Monday, 27 June 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

The Trojan Dub Box 2 is better than the first one. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I also dig on Prince Far I in a 'eavy 'eavy way esp Cry Tuff Dub Encounter Chapter 3, this is a total classic. Some other faves are Horace Andy (the dub versions of In the Light are excellent, also, Dance Hall Style. The Studio One Dub collection on Soul Jazz is really good. King Tubby Dub like Dirt on Blood and Fire. The Dennis Bovell collection that came out a couple years ago is still a personal fave. So many more.

mcd (mcd), Monday, 27 June 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

You're right, this is perfect music for hot, humid and hazy weather.

mcd (mcd), Monday, 27 June 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

augustus pablo - east of the river nile

oops (Oops), Monday, 27 June 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

(yeah yeah it's technically not dub)

oops (Oops), Monday, 27 June 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

i just got the reissue of the upsetters' super ape in the mail like 45 minutes ago! it sounds really really awesome - cant wait for the bonus tracks...

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 27 June 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

i don't have a lot of dub, and most if not all have been mentioned already but my favorite hasn't yet so here it is:
Prince Far I, Cry Tuff Dub Encounter Chapter 3. Deep, gorgeous and willing to take you anywhere.

willem (willem), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

on the weirder/electronic tip:

meat beat manifesto in dub
renegade soundwave in dub
hallucinogen in dub

not traditional jamaican dub in any sense but good stuff

jsd, Monday, 27 June 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

If you don't mind vocals, there's Toyan's "How the West Was Won" on Greensleeves label - Roots Radics rhythms being dubbed out by Scientist at Tubby's studio with Ranking Toyan toasting over top. This might be a slept-on classic.

Also - the Rhythm and Sound cd "w/ the Artists"

Ô¿Ô (eman), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 02:54 (twenty years ago)

all the classics mentioned above and
Lee Perry's Arkester Box Set and Stratch Attack
Mikey Dread - African Anthem
Welton Irie - Ghettoman Corner
Scientist - Wins the World Cup
King Tubby and the Skatalites
Junior Murvin - Police and Thieves
PIL - Second Edition
The Congos - Heart of the Congos
Dub Syndicate - Classic Selections - Vol. 1
African Head Charge - Drastic Season
Twilight Circus Dub Sound System - In Dub Vol. 1 and Dub Voyage
Rhythm & Sound - Rhythm & Sound and Versions
Dub Trio - Exploring the Dangers of
Nonplace Urban Field - Raum Fur Notizen

Mulimgauze - Lo Fi India Abuse

milney gauzem (dr. t), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

Get some Wackies dub too!

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 07:25 (twenty years ago)

yeah!

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 07:31 (twenty years ago)

**The Studio One Dub collection on Soul Jazz is really good. King Tubby Dub like Dirt on Blood and Fire.**

You are spot-on with these two, mcd. Studio One Dub is a real surprise - I don't know whether Coxsone himself engineered most of these (he claimed so), or whether Sylvan Morris really did 'em, but there's some amazing stuff on there e.g Running Dub, a version of Delroy Wilson's Run Run. The tension and release using the stabbing horn riff makes for a stupendous build until on 3 mins or so Delroy bursts out with Girl I'm Gonna Hold You Tight. Most of this collection is nearly as good - no gimmicks, just nice and simple and 'eavy.

Dub Like Dirt is THE BEST Tubby/associates collection there is. THE. BEST. Some cracking Jammy and Phil Smart deconstructions on there.

Also recommended :

King Tubby and The Soul Syndicate - Freedom Sounds In Dub (Blood and Fire)

Scientist - Dub In The Roots Tradition (also B&F)

Also seconded Jonathan's recommendation of Dub Triptych upthread.

Am I the only person round here who thinks that Pick A Dub isn't all that good?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

Lots of good stuff mentioned already. I'll add one more :)

Black Uhuru's Positive Dub

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm also a fan of the 2-fer CDs where you get the album and dub version of the album, like the aforementioned In the Light by Horace Andy, or Burning Spear's Marcus Garvey/Garvey's Ghost and Sugar Minott's Ghetto-Ology + Dub (dub version of the latter done by King Tubby).

Get some Wackies dub too!
recommendations please.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

i have the Jah Batta cd on Wackies, really nice early dancehall

Ô¿Ô (eman), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

Dr. C very otm with all his recommendations...but he is alone w/r/t Pick a Dub.

Nature's Dub is a good Wackies one.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

August Pablo seconded!

Augustus Pablo + King Tubby = bliss

Mickey (modestmickey), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

There's a great Pablo comp on Pressure Sounds called 'In Fine Style'. It starts of with Far East and 3 excellent versions then diverges into other Rockers stuff. There's a great Jah Levi (Hugh Mundell) track, False Rumour, on the Real Rock riddim and lots of other rareties.

So tell me what's so great about Pick A Dub, people!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 08:20 (twenty years ago)

woozy melodies over quirky, moody, heavy rhythms! nearly every song has something to catch your attention and distinguish itself from the rest.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Serge Gainsbourg's "Aux Armes Et Caetera" and "Mauvaises Nouvelles Des Etoiles" -- Versions Dub.

"Aux Armes" is from '79 and he's working with Sly & Robbie. Very dubby and minimal. Sleazy French talk and a beat -- not an unfamiliar format for our man.

"Mauvaises Nouvelles" is more Compass Point with Marley's I-Threes on vocals. I like "Dub From The Stars".

Rob Uptight (Rob Uptight), Thursday, 30 June 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

And definitely seconding Oops' selection of Joe Gibbs' "No Bones for the Dogs" -- better melodies than most.
