My favourite band.

I thought they were boring in 1986. I doubt age has helped.

A few good songs, lots of crap. The Sharks LP is horrible. The BBC Sessions cd is probably my favorite along with A Band From Birmingham. I never did get/hear the Girlie Years cd and I feel no rush to get it either.

several great singles, otherwise too often sub-Orange Juice. on their day, the 2nd most jangliest band ever (behind the Chesterfields).

Still, about 1000000 times better than most bands today.

search: night after night, throwaway, built like a car, is there anybody out there...

I quite liked them back in the day and saw them play at least once. They were admirably urgent as we used to say. If it was Chesterfields vs. Mighty Mighty (aka. battle of the concentrated Orange Juices) I'd go with the Chesterfields but Mighty Mighty had some good songs. The only one I've heard in the last decade or so is "Throwaway" which was pretty influencial to a tiny amount of people, mostly for the lyrics ("are you scared to get happy" was a mantra for a while). It still stands up strong. I had a mate who was into Black Flag, Flipper, Chrome etc and he swore that "Built Like A Car" rocked like fuck.

Overall: Classic. Why not?

I've got two 7" singles from back in the day that I love, never heard anything else. Someone sell me on finding more...

I should mention that the flexi-disc or "Throwaway" (on the pre-Sarah "Sha-la-la label) which also had "Girl Of Your Dreams" by the Bachelor Pad is one of the greatest freebies evah. It's probably worth dozens of dollars on e-bay these days. Has there ever been a CD of those Sha-La-La flexi-discs?

I thought this thread was going to be about "Mighty Mighty (Spade and Whitey)"

Has there ever been a CD of those Sha-La-La flexi-discs?

there hasn't, but soon a benevolent collector will make these tracks unofficially available one way or another..

shop shop around...

i thought the lyrics "are you scared to get happy" were from Hurrahs' "Hip Hip".
a CD of the flexis would be good, i haven't played mine for a long while & dread to think what sort of state they are in.

I quite liked them as a nipper - up until 'Brian Rix', which is one of the worst singles ever recorded.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 08:15 (twenty years ago)

um, that was by Brilliant Corners wasnt it? (and WHY DO I REMEMBER THESE THINGS ARRRGHHHHHH!)

There was apparently an offer (from, I think, Glass records) to put out a complete Sha La La CD during the early-ish days of Sarah. Matt wasn't keen, as I recall, and it didn't get as far as talking to the groups.

I made a tape of the whole lot a few years back (it fitted very snugly on one side of a C90) and I think Matt made a good choice. It made for an uneven listen. I wouldn't be enormously keen on seeing a complete Sha La La CD happen, though I wouldn't mind reading the sleevenotes.

I believe this is what your young people's file sharing networks are for, isn't it?

Looking through some old trash at my parents' house a few months back, I stumbled across a review I wrote of a Mighty Mighty live show in (I suppose) late 86 or early 87. I have tried really hard but I can't dig out any memory of the evening whatsoever.

(x-post: JtN: "Brian Rix" was the Brilliant Corners, I think. And you're right.)

Doh - I should be drummed out of twee camp.
