ISO - Easy and Cheap Way to Use iPod in Car

I am looking for a way to utilize my iPod in my car without spending money on less-than-effective FM transmitters, etc. Sound quality a high priority, as is ease of installation.

I seem to recall a type of antenna adapter that "plugged" into your antenna and fed the signal via FM to the stereo, but avoided all of the problems associated with the transmitters (signal drowned out in metro areas).

Any ideas beyond using my headphones while driving - an anti social and illegal set of behavior!

The car doesn't have a tape player?

(I ask cause there are those cassette-shaped adapters with regular miniplugs at the other end. Apart from that I really don't imagine it'd cost that much to take the car to some car-stereo dudes and have them just wire a line in to the stereo -- has anyone tried that?)

Unfortunately, no. No tape player, which is a sad state of affairs. This is another benefit of the plug for the iPod is that the Walkman will then become usable in the car as well.

I guess that type of action is what I am talking about...does anyone have any ideas/opinions about this?

I have a blaupunkt stereo with an unused cd changer line-in on the back of the deck. I found a dealer in town who had a cord in stock that had a proprietery plug on one end and RCA plugs on the other. I bought that for $20 and connected it to a $7-ish RCA to 1/8" jack cord and plugged that into the other cord. Then I wound that down into the foot well on the passenger side and poked it out through a seam. Now I have a about 6 inches of cord hanging inconspicuously by my passengers feet when it's not in use and I've got HOT JAMZ when it is in use. The whole installation took me about 10 minutes. I never knew how much empty space there was in a dashboard... BTW, if you don't have a cd changer input, you may just have an aux-in which would be even easier...

It was easy, it was cheap, go and do it!
