Sometimes i see "deluxe editions" planned & just roll my eyes but these cd versions sound amazing.I've never really cared for "Landed" before but now i am blown away by it.If they had only released "Flow Motion & "Saw Delight" as well.Next time i guess. And yeah this stuff is not as groundbreaking as early Can but as stoner hippie rythmic tour de forces they rule in my book.

This is good to hear, as I just ordered all the new batch.

I'd been waiting for 'Future Days' as much as 'Ege Bamyasi' since the beginning. These remasters, unlike many, do actually sound better to my ears. Can is *still* ahead of the pop curve, and they deserve to be heard as clearly as possible.

Is there a remaster of Faust's 'IV' anywhere?

I.M. (I.M.), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

Is the packaging the same as the first batch (each disc gets a certain color, etc.)?

Christian, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 02:24 (twenty years ago)

Just got them at Easy Street at $11.99 each... fuck a amazon (@ 13.99 + shipping + we don't have them yet? noooo).

(sorry, lyra.. Amaz's getting lots of my money the past few weeks, so you're in good hands with donut earnings)

donut e-g (donut), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

Is the packaging the same as the first batch (each disc gets a certain color, etc.)?

I saw them in FOPP - the CD boxes have lovely rounded edges.

Jez (Jez), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 07:50 (twenty years ago)

Hmmmmm, round edges...

Die Emanzipation von Baaderonixx (redukt) (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 07:52 (twenty years ago)

I can't wait until the Can Delay 1968 and Cannibalism 2 reissues, or whatever the fuck is going to have a remastered bangin' and boomin' "Turtles Have Short Legs".

donut e-g (donut), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 07:54 (twenty years ago)

It was on "Cannibalism 2" methinks? That's unlikely to reissued I would have thought.

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 07:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm just getting into the first batch which they're already selling midprice and the difference in sound quality is quite radical (the second half of Tago Mago starts to make sense now...) The colour of the artwork also is superior. So I'll be able to replace Future Days and Soon over Babaluma, by far my favorite Can albums within a year's time. ;)

Omar (Omar), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 08:01 (twenty years ago)

i just bought future days and babaluma on monday and it's all i have listened to for the last two days. the liner notes are pretty wanky, but the pictures are of course great. (love the aviators, dudes.) and duh the sound is awesome.

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 10:16 (twenty years ago)

I hope so, because "Babaluma" has never sounded that good - well not on vinyl anyway

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 10:20 (twenty years ago)

well i listen to everything on shitty headphones, so take it for what it's worth.

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

I think I've said it here before but a "Soon Over Babaluma" that sounds as good as a "Tago Mago" or an "Ege Bamyasi" is a long-standing and fervent wish in the Dadaismus household

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

And mine

can't wait forn these reissues!

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

Still no proper box set though?

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

just got mine and, yes, they sound wonderfull. clarity, depth of tone, no fucking hiss. but the differences aren't as obvious to my ears as they were for the 1st set. maybe it's just that these aren't my favourites? i've barely listened to landed over the years so am looking forward to some sort of conversion to it's slight charms. unfortunately, mine haven't got the lovely rounded corners this time - i got these through cduniverse but got the 1st via mute in the uk.

phil turnbull (philT), Friday, 8 July 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

no fucking hiss

Does this go for Side Two of "Soon Over Babaluma" too??!?!??!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 8 July 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

yeah, mine came yesterday and i woke up to "Bel Air" this morning and oh man you just know it's gonna be a good day when that happens

rentboy (rentboy), Friday, 8 July 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

chain reaction / quantum physics have never sounded better

phil turnbull (philT), Friday, 8 July 2005 10:28 (twenty years ago)

Oh good, that's my Can that is, fuck yer Bel Airs

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 8 July 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

saw them yesterday, no round edges. why? fuckers. also, i find the new/original colors (purple/brownish) of the future days cover rather ugly compared to the blue one i'm familiar with...

willem (willem), Friday, 8 July 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

They changed the colour?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 8 July 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

i believe the 'old' cd versions had rather bleak colours compared to the original albums. as i understand it they've restored the original covers (colourwise) on these reissues...

willem (willem), Friday, 8 July 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

But the original LP of "Future Days" is blue

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 8 July 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

that's what i thought when i saw the cd yesterday

(when you look for the cd on amazon.co.uk you get three slightly different colourschemes... sorry to blabber on about this but irl it looked ugly)

willem (willem), Friday, 8 July 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

Is Unlimited Edition worth grabbing?

T. Weiss (Timmy), Saturday, 9 July 2005 06:35 (twenty years ago)

Unlimited Edition is a dog's breakfast.. and was meant to be... It's worth it alone for the earlier outtakes circa Malcolm Mooney, like "Connection", "Mother Upduff", "The Empress And The Ukraine King"... the other tracks are just random bits of experimentation that sound good as a small sound collage as they are usually very short tracks.. none of the Suzuki tracks are full fledged "songs" (in the Geir sense) really.. so don't expect any "Turtles Have Short Legs" type outtakes in it.

donut e- (donut), Saturday, 9 July 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

it has 'Gomorrah" doesn't it?

Paul (scifisoul), Saturday, 9 July 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

I really like Unlimited Edition! The early Mooney stuff is totally great, particularly "Connection," which is the most straightforwardly garage-rockin thing they ever did, and "Empress," which was appropriated by Stereolab for something or other I can't remember the name of.

I used to be kinda underwhelmed by a lot of the other stuff, but it's been shooting up steadily in my estimation. The Damo tracks are almost pastoral, and give a nice counterpoint to their other recorded stuff with him - I've always dug "Doko E" and I particularly like "I'm Too Leise." Even several of the Ethnological Forgery Series tracks are really interesting.

So yeah, in conclusion, if you're a big fan of the first six albums, it's totally worth checking out.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Saturday, 9 July 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Is it just me, or does it seem comletely likely that Can would have a large amount of good/great unreleased music? I mean, if none of the stuff from 'Delay' seemed good enough to the band to put it on 'Ulimited Edition,' and they had their own studio for most of those years. . .

It's sort of like Faust--I think their unreleased (at its time of creation) stuff stands at least the equal of the proper records.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking.

I.M. (I.M.), Saturday, 9 July 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

I doubt Can has many unrealeased songs but I'm sure there are hours and hours of great jams. There are probably also hours upon hours of not-so-great jams to sort through to get to the good stuff.

I think Faust are unique though in that their best material (in my opinion, the Faust Tapes & 71 minutes of Faust / Munich & Elsewhere) are the things that weren't considered proper albums. Part of that has to do with how those collections are edited together though.

It would be great to hear a Faust Tapes-style collage of unreleased Can material gathered from all eras of the Inner Space archives. I'm not sure that I would trust that Czukay would do a great job at this point though, and I'm sure he's the only one really in a position to do something with it all. Weren't some of the tracks on the Sacrelige remix album done with material pulled from the vaults?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Saturday, 9 July 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I take that back. The Faust Tapes treatment would be the wrong way to go with Can and it's probably the kind of thing Czukay would be likely to do -- old Can outtakes being picked up on his shortwave radio. It would be best to focus on the interplay between Karoli & Liebezeit and just let the pieces stretch out and soar. Any editing should be along the lines of the less obtrusive Tago Mago / Bitches Brew kind of approach.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Saturday, 9 July 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Wouldn't you love to see a Miles Davis box sets-style 'The Complete Ege Bamyasi' or 'The Complete Future Days'?

I.M. (I.M.), Saturday, 9 July 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

Hmm. The thing about the Can records is that all the final product came from takes and jams that were very heavily edited, overdubs added, etc. And that's part of the genius of Can. Personally, I haven't even been all that excited about the recently released live stuff all that much, so I wouldn't be that excited about the prospect of a bunch of raw Can studio jams being released either.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 9 July 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

And I hate to see artists' discographies get cluttered up w/ inferior product (see: the Fall).

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 9 July 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

That's true, I could see that.

I think I'm just greedy for more. You just figure a band that had its own studio *has* to have some good unreleased stuff. . . but perhaps not. Can is a band I just don't think is in danger of diminution through dillution.

I.M. (I.M.), Saturday, 9 July 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

Something obsessively complete like the Miles Davis boxes or even the Fun House box might be nice because it could get a lot of the unreleased stuff out there without seeming like it was cluttering up the discography. But I agree that the live jams themselves probably wouldn't be too interesting unedited. And honestly who would do a good job at editing them? And who would even be handed the opportunity? At best it would be Czukay at worst, someone like Bill Laswell.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Sunday, 10 July 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

All Can fans must hear Blur's "Battle". I said this before and I am saying it again.

Hydrochloric Shaved Weirds (Bimble...), Sunday, 10 July 2005 01:14 (twenty years ago)

That's from '13', yes? I remember it being pretty good, but I can't place it.

I.M. (I.M.), Sunday, 10 July 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

Can fans should also here "Inside" from Jethro Tull's Benefit album!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 10 July 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

I just hope that Cannibalism I and II get the reissue treatment.. granted, there's crossover on both from the proper albums, but I would love to hear the "Turtles" single remastered and also a selection of the solo stuff. Somehow, I doubt that will happen...

BUT what MIGHT happen instead is some 2-CD collection in the future that serves as a summary of the remasters that includes some of the non-album tracks, or possibly previously unreleased stuff.

donut e- (donut), Sunday, 10 July 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

That's from '13', yes? I remember it being pretty good, but I can't place it.

That is absolutely correct. And Blur should be known for that, their most experimental album. They should be KNOWN for it. But are they? NO.

Hydrochloric Shaved Weirds (Bimble...), Sunday, 10 July 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

I recently picked up the first 4 - mid-price, nice - the sound is wonderfully clear, Holger Czukay’s bass sounds fuller and richer, as do the details of Liebezeit’s tight percussion. ‘Tago Mago’ now holds my attention well into the ‘difficult’ second-half.

Bring on ‘Future Days’.

stevo (stevo), Sunday, 10 July 2005 06:04 (twenty years ago)

I want the full 12 hours of "Yoo Doo Right" and I WANT IT NOW!!! I heard CAN for the first time a month ago and I ran out and bought "Monster Movie", "Tago" and "Future Days." I can't believe I've gone this long without CAN in my life. I can't stop listening to "Yoo Doo Right." When I sleep, I dream of it's glory.

I'm delighted to hear that it is indeed the eponymous Can (also known as "Inner Space") that is to be reissued next. That is definitely in my top three or four Can records.

I'd really like to read a long essay about Can by Dr. C, preferably on the topic of Soon Over Babaluma and Saw Delight. Too lazy to search the archives for such treasure right now. It's late here, way past my bedtime.

honorary joy division roadie (Bimble...), Saturday, 22 April 2006 09:11 (twenty years ago)

"Safe" alone makes 'Can' great, one of the best (not)Disco tracks ever released, I.M.O. Great groove, nice syncopated percussions over the steady drumming, and some of the best evil-swarm-of-locusts noise Can ever created floating around the edges. I think on the whole it's a seriously underrated album. If it'd been released by some band of post-punk youngsters, it would be given "gem" status, if not canonised.

The only sad thing is that it (and their legitimate period as a band) ends with with "Can-Can" and "Can Be," two awful, silly, boring little jokes and two of the very, very few songs by Can (prior to 'Rite Time') that lack any style or "cool" whatsoever.

I very much hope it does get reissued.

I.M. (I.M.), Saturday, 22 April 2006 09:32 (twenty years ago)

"Safe" is one of their best song ever - and "Aspectacle" was on the same album, or I am wrong?

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Saturday, 22 April 2006 09:50 (twenty years ago)

Ur wrong

Hoppo, Saturday, 22 April 2006 09:52 (twenty years ago)

No, u r.

willem -- (willem), Saturday, 22 April 2006 09:58 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, "A Spectacle" and "Sunday Jam" are both great, and "All Gates Open" and "Sodom" are as good as anything on the mid-70s albums. "Safe" is up there, top 15 tracks of the complete oeuvre. Is this album really disliked? Could it be some contingency of Can-lovers couldn't follow the fellows into the "dumb" territory of disco (even though the mechanique-cool of underground disco follows very much the steady-cool of peak Can)?

I.M. (I.M.), Saturday, 22 April 2006 10:21 (twenty years ago)

please god, dont put a remix on the 12"

itll never be as good as the one that you have in your head.

and some things are above faddy remixs'

just have the original on one side and maybe a quantised version on the other.

Danny boy, Saturday, 22 April 2006 11:44 (twenty years ago)

I like "Can Can."

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 22 April 2006 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Though I suppose you could argue that it's incongruous on the album. But disco albums were maybe weird in general? So maybe not so weird to stick novelty Eurodisco track on an otherwise long jam/head music oriented album.

I have to wonder: Is it that enough time has elapsed now that people are seeing the s/t '79 album as being really good and having style? Has not enough time elapsed for people to feel the same way about Rite Time (also, I believe, a very good album)?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 23 April 2006 00:27 (twenty years ago)

(Sorry, just reacting to I.M.'s comment above. I don't think Rite Time is that dissimilar to the '79 album in scope. A little stylistically different, yes, but I.M.'s comment implies that the '79 album is more tasteful and I'm not sure why.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 23 April 2006 00:56 (twenty years ago)

I'll admit, I don't own 'Rite Time' and haven't heard it in quite some time, but my recollection is pretty negative. It reminded me of "Can Can," actually--cartoonish, bubbly, silly but not particularly fun. And while it's a hazy recollection, I remember thinking the production was pretty awful. I'll give it another listen. . .

I.M. (I.M.), Sunday, 23 April 2006 01:24 (twenty years ago)

no holger, no credibility

lil' merzbow wow (haitch), Sunday, 23 April 2006 07:29 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah I am completely addicted to Can nowadays. Bought the remastered Soon Over Babaluma. But that doesn't matter because I can't even get over Flow Motion and I heard it a few years ago already. I think I've played about 5 of their albums in a row in the last 24 hours.

honorary joy division roadie (Bimble...), Sunday, 23 April 2006 11:04 (twenty years ago)

Wotcher, Bimble. Dozens of folks have said it all already I reckon. Mind you, I hope Saw Delight and Flow Motion get properly reappraised with these new releases. Both fantastic albums.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Sunday, 23 April 2006 18:33 (twenty years ago)

I stay away from that and Out of Reach with that terrible vocalist who's name shall remain untyped by me.

Oi! That was Rosko Gee, a great bass player and good vocalist (go listen to "Saw Delight" cloth ears!) He's the best thing on "Out of Reach", it's Karoli, Schmidt and Liebezeit who are shite on that album.

Kids Will Eat Them Till the Cows Come Home (Dada), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 11:46 (twenty years ago)

I didn't think Out of Reach was that bad. The band disowned it, but to me it doesn't sound that much different from Saw Delight or whatever.

Brakhage (brakhage), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 15:32 (twenty years ago)

On the contrary, it sounds like shite, it's just badly produced - muffled and muddy (come back Holger all is forgiven). Also the playing is limp - the first side is especially bad - and the songs are directionless, it's a mess and the two songs that Rosko Gee wrote are the only halfway decent things on it.

Kids Will Eat Them Till the Cows Come Home (Dada), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was thinking 'not that bad' only related to other late Can, most of which I don't like.

Verbatim on the back of the Rite Time booklet...

MALCOM MOONEY MOONEY VOCALS
IRMIN SCHMIDT KEYBOARDS, KIMBLE
MALCOM MOONEY DRUMS, PERCUSSION
MALCOM MOONEY CHORUS VOCALS, POCKET ORGAN, BASS GUITAR
MALCOM MOONEY FRENCH HORN, DICTAPHONE, SYNTHESIZER, BASS

Okay help me here - are we waiting on possible reissues of Saw Delight and Flow Motion or has this already occured? ...scrolls upthread...*holy shit!*

Has-been Hash Brown (Bimble...), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 03:53 (twenty years ago)

And they do acknowledge the shit that went down with Out Of Reach on the Saw Delight liner notes... In brief, Rosko Gee made the dangerous mistake of claiming (and, I can only induce, demanding) ownership of two songs from OOR, which went against the Can ethos of equal ownership of every song, no matter who played who didn't play on it. Why Gee was able to do that is not explained.

((((((DOPplur)))n)))u))))tttt (donut), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 03:53 (twenty years ago)

Hmm...did it turn into a legal thing?

Has-been Hash Brown (Bimble...), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 04:02 (twenty years ago)

It's not mentioned. They just leave it with Rosko Gee being the implied meanie, and Karoli - the one who allowed all this to happen and let Czukay leave - quotes the Can ethos for song ownership as being paramount.

So, I'll go get the *cough* objective liner notes for the cheapo used copy of Out Of Reach I got a while back.. written by Goeff "Mad Dog" Horgan, the guitarist/vocalist for Why Not:

"Let's now move onto this CAN album. As a Musician myself, I would like to explore the songs and provide you with my idea of what the song titles mean in relation to the music. The art of improvisation is a kind of jamming, a fusion of performance and various music styles. In any case you the listener should try and get inside the music, to get to the depth of the art of music. Don't always go by what some journalists write about bands, decide for yourself about the performance and the songs."

"...CAN appeared at a time when progressive rock was just beginning, so by the time they recorded 'Out Of Reach', CAN had long developed their progressive sound. Many bands have problems; people coming and going, arguments about music, and this is what I hear and feel on this album, a sort of musical contrast, a happening that is real, a statement from a band in the middle of their career. This is what makes this album important in the history of this band."

[..proceeds to wax badly poetic about EVERY FUCKING SONG ON "OUT OF REACH".. making this longer than all the reissue liner notes combined, but far more LOLtastic...]

I put to you that "Mad Dog" was Rosko Gee's Criswell.

(And yes, "Musician" was capitalized.)

Ironically, Out Of Reach isn't really that much worse than Saw Delight and Can really.. which is to say, it doesn't outright suck... it's just the most "meh" of their albums, but not unlistenably or embarrassingly bad IMHO.

just finished listening, and i have to say I like it in a 60s trippy soundtracky way, I am glad I own it and it is enjoyable, but honestly it's <<< Monster Movie

it's definitely of its time, i guess, and not like a huge revelation. some of the tracks would stand out on a compilation of 60s eurotrash soundtracks but yeah, not nearly as good as the malcolm stuff. i'll probably listen to it a lot more than i have the "prehistoric future" boot.
