Maybe he will leave one on Saville Row. DYS?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

I'd prefer it if left money around London for people to find and keep

Hey, if it means Saville gets paid, I'm all for it.

Yeah, somebody should really set up a trust for the guy. I love the stories about him selling promo CDs for food money at Amoeba Hollywood.

Is the "peter saville is broke" thing a joke? He was a Pentagram partner, for chrissakes. Too much "high" living?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

ebay watch time. lets see how many appear ..

will be interesting to see which up and coming artists have signed em ..

i saw a piece in blowback a few years ago about an artist that does this type of thing all the time around london .. cant recall his tag .. he is a graf/hip hop artist, and he reuses 'rubbish' to do his art on and then places them in various places.

Yeah, but he was only with them for two years before leaving. ILMer Grimly Fiendish was kind enough to share a recent article about Saville with me in which his money problems are discussed at length. In it, Saville reckons he spends 10,000 quid a year that he doesn't have. And it talks about him selling CD's for food in L.A. in 1994 as well. The article paints him as a pretty uncompromising guy as far as what he's willing to do design-wise.

haha 'customised by up and coming british artists'!

Despite his brokeness, I bet he gets invited to great dinner parties!

I'm sure NME must have already used that article headline on Pete Doherty. More than once.

ILMer Grimly Fiendish

[waves]

it's all true. saville is an uncompromising aesthete; his own worst enemy, if you like. you've got to admire him, in a way: at least he doesn't try to blame anyone else for his crippling lack of cash.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 30 June 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

One day last week I was given two free pots of custardy rice pudding on the streets of London, which I then customised by eating and digesting.

can someone explain why doesn't factory own the closer and low-life designs used on that skateboard deck (and the t-shirts that are all over ebay)?

john'n'chicago, Thursday, 30 June 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

factory?

i assume you mean why saville himself doesn't own the copyright for his designs ... probably a) because he and wilson never stopped for a second to consider that such things might be important, and b) because half of them were nicked anyway. can you copyright what is essentially an image lifted from an astronomy book?

still: such was the factory way. fantastic in terms of coolness, stories and folklore; absolutely dreadful if you wanted to, you know, make a living. it's why i can almost - almost - forgive new order for the never-ending stream of compilations etc. they lost out on the opportunity to make so much cash during the factory days that it seems almost churlish to begrudge them the chance now.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 30 June 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

peter saville is broke? really??! wow.
but there's been two MAJOR exhibitions of his stuff, and on the opening weekend up here u couldnt get a ticket for love nor money.

this whole Saving Some of Your Money
lark really is important isn't it?

piscesboy, Thursday, 30 June 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Is this the guy who invented Alvin & the Chipmunks?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 30 June 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Did Martin Hannett produce the Witchdoctor?

Unless yr kidding, you're thinking of David Saville.
