PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

What do you want to know?

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

Suicide.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Suicide. Not that the Silver Apples aren't interesting, I find their use of banjo is a bit of a problem.

Soukesian, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

Suicide. A collaboration would have been pretty cool, don't ya think? Silver Apples' oscillations with Vega wailing over the top...

Silver Suicide or Suicidal Apples?

Joseph B. Cowart (flamingrev), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Suicide definitely. The first four Silver Apples songs you hear - provided you listen to their output chronologically - are astonishing and it's rather sharply downhill from there.

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

How is Simeon/Simian? I heard he broke his back on a reunion tour some years back, but was expected to make a good recovery.

If he's OK, I suppose some sort of collaboration wouldn't be out of the question. Rev and Vega seem to be up for that kind of thing.

Soukesian, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

Suicide for concept, Silver Apples for music.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Silver Apples

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

Silver Apples

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Won't choose.

Ellsworth M. Toohey (Grodd), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

I find both quite comparable in terms of attention-kept, could probably hold both to about 5 classic songs each. But "I Have Known Love" is my favorite song out of both camps, so I'll lean towards Silver Apples.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

How is Simeon/Simian?

I don't know but isn't Danny Taylor dead?

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

I find their use of banjo is a bit of a problem.

Not sure if you're a fan of The Monks, but how 'bout them banjos?

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

Banjos are OK but not when used instead of 96 oscillators and 5 ring modulators or whatever the Apples were using

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Exactly, I'm not against Banjos per se, but I found them a bit jarring in context. And not in a good way.

No such problem with The Monks, of course.

Soukesian, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Silver Apples

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

the Apples

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

yes, danny taylor is dead

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

The banjo tunes rule.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

Silver Apples, oh yes.

Heck, Simeon was probably playing the banjo at the same time he was noodling on his bank of oscillators.

gne hpstr (Matching Mole), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Silver Apples. Two and a half solid albums. (the latter half was finally released as The Garden many years ago, albeit with the newer jams that just weren't all that)

Suicide were a better influencer of bands than they were a band, if that makes sense. (although I wish I could go back in time and see them open for the Clash back in the day and see the notorious riots ensue.)

donut e-g (donut), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

suicide you pussies

jj, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Donut wins.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

Suicide

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

actually, i lied, it wasn't close at all.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

suicide.

BUT.

bands inspired by silver apples >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> donkey balls >>>>> bands inspired by suicide.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 30 June 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

sorry donut! crap industrial and power electronics vs. "psychedelic" oscillator primitivism.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 30 June 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

You left 'shaved donkey balls' out of the equation.

TS the cover of "Ruby" by Gallon Drunk vs. the cover of "Diamonds, Fur Coats, Champagne" by the Fatima Mansions (I love 'em both)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 June 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

bands inspired by silver apples >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> donkey balls >>>>> bands inspired by suicide.

Folk Implosion >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> donkey balls >>>>> Snapper?

No. Sorry. Wrong.

donut e-g (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

Meat Beat Manifesto >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> donkey balls >>>>> Sonic Youth?

I mean, an opinion is an opinion and all. *shrug*

donut e-g (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

except when Folk Implosion is invoked. Then opinions rise above to purgatory.

knifestorm >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> donkey balls >>>>> crack: we are rock

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 30 June 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

A.R.E. Weapons were maybe Suicide influenced? And also kind of good though maybe kind of annoying?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 30 June 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

About this 'good' assertion.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 June 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

i define good as "something i would want to listen to."
not A.R.E weapons.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 30 June 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

Weren't they like the evil version of Andrew W.K.?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 30 June 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

difficult, but my heart says silver apples.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 30 June 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

Silver Apples by a mile.
Suicide are to be endured, like "art".

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 30 June 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

Jesus, people! What the fuck is wrong with y'all? With much love, I would have to go with the six out of sixteen who prefer Suicide. By about a couple of light years.

sleeve (sleeve), Thursday, 30 June 2005 06:36 (twenty years ago)

Silver Apples would be best my a mile if they were instumental only - my god, that singing is awful. With Suicide, I've only heard their first album which I didn't rate much, and apparently the second is far better - so from my heart of evil neutrality I'm going to call this a draw)

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 30 June 2005 07:55 (twenty years ago)

Oooh, this is hard. Conceptually, I would choose Silver Apples, especially based on just one song - because their music becomes a bit grating and samey after about 3 or 4 songs. But I can listen to more Suicide in one sitting.

MIS Information (kate), Thursday, 30 June 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm exactly the complement. I love to come back to the Silver Apples, but can only deal with Suicide (i.e. the first album.. the only one I pay attention to) in spurts.

Suicide's first album >>>>>> Silver Apples' self titled > Silver Apples' Contact > the better half of Silver Apples' The Garden >>>> any other Silver Apples >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> any other Suicide, Alan Vega, or Martin Rev solo stuff (aside from maybe three tracks total.."Rain of Ruin", "Ice Drummer" and Vega's cameo on Mercury Rev's b-side to "Everlasting Arm")

It was close, but the Silver Apples edge it out for me.

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 07:59 (twenty years ago)

donut, what of "dream baby dream"??

there are twelve people in the world the rest are haitch (haitch), Thursday, 30 June 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

America is killing it's youth.

nicholas de jong (nicholas de jong), Thursday, 30 June 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

I saw People of the North (Bobby and Kid of Oneida) cover both "Oscillations" and "Rocket USA" at a show in Kansas City. I sang on the Suicide cover, so Suicide edges it out for me. And their second album is just gorgeous. But I have also danced between the stars, the music sounds like Sweet Guitars.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Thursday, 30 June 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

suicide always win.
and i'm booking a few dates for martin rev in september (yay!).

joan vich (joan vich), Thursday, 30 June 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

unfortunately never heard "dream baby dream"... Suicide reissues have been really numerous and floundering and somehow never got to hear the EP because of it.

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

One Suicide cover I want to hear is the version of 'Sheree' by ? and the Mysterians on one of their Norton LPs. I think Suicide are really closer in spirit to garage-monotone merchants like the Mysterians and (particularly) the Seeds than they are to the Silver Apples. (And I'm not slagging off ANY of these fine groups of musicians.)

My pick for the one disk you need after the first Suicide album is the ROIR live/demos comp 1/2 Alive. Probably the Suicide recordings I've played most over the years. Loads of their convulsive rocknroll and industrial blues, and very listenable. 'Frankie Teardrop' does not appear, but even as a fan, most days I don't want to deal with Frankie.

Soukesian, Thursday, 30 June 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Suicide all the way. The Silver Apples sound great in theory - but the reality is that the lyrics are risible hippy whimsy, the guy's reedy voice quickly begins to grate, his oscillator contraption is a one-trick pony, and they've only got one tune. And not a very good one, at that.
I listened dutifully to the two-album reissue a few times, ripped one song (A Pox on You), and sold the CD on.

Palomino (Palomino), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

mort garson

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

palomino: wrong. i hope your turtleneck catches on fire.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 30 June 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

Pwned! I actually got to thinking last night about how, the last time I threw my two cents into an ILM thread referencing underground music from the late '60s, El Sabor had ripped me a new one. And here he is again.
I name him Nemesis.

Palomino (Palomino), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

aww, i'm just kidding. but seriously, to me suicide's lyrics are frequently every bit as contrived and of their time as the silver apples.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Saturday, 2 July 2005 03:47 (twenty years ago)

Yes. Though I think "contrived" is a little harsh for both groups.
