because, let's face it, they ARE rock! Not?

Two of them sired sportsmen. Terry Oakes - footballer Scott Oakes formerly of Luton, Sheff Wed. Dunno who else. And Romeo Challenger's son is Ben Challenger the British international high jumper.

What else? Buddy Gask was my favourite as he has a good name. Singer Dave Bartram was the spittin' image of then Leeds goalie David Harvey, to continue the sporting theme.

Darts (as in Daddy Cool, Duke of Earl) were better.

Dr. C, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not forgetting that Aston Villa's Dion Dublin is the drummer's nephew.

Daniel, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They had curious socks, I recall.

Michael Daddino, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never heard of them.

Who me?

And again:

Once I went to the Peterborough regional office for work, and the woman running it was a bit authoritarial. I had taken the train from King's Cross, and she had the nerve to ask why I was twenty minutes late! (Note to non-UK residents - 'taken train' = 'slim chance of even showing up, let alone on time') I said "Two winos were having a syringe fight in King's Cross and I wanted to stay and watch", or something equally idiotic. Later on I found an e-mail she'd sent to the MD quoting me on this verbatim! Fit body, though. Anyway, point of this story is that she's having Showaddywaddy play at her wedding this spring.

Racey's "Lay All Your Love On Me" was better than anything they did.

Robin Carmody, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sure I once heard that while playing a residency in Blackpool, the Las Vegas of Lancashire, they could take their pick of the local thirteen year old girls who bunked off school to flock around them, and apparently they did. The perks of pop fame, eh? Can this be true?

Snotty Moore, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I went to school with the son of David 'The Duke' Allured. he was a new romantic and walked around with a huge ghetto blaster in his satchel. He used it to play Duran Duran at top volume when he was doing his homework at dinner time.

Surely 'Tiger Feet' by Mud is the pinnacle of this kind of thing, as it appealed to both pre-schools and Oxford dons.

Malcolm 'The Duke' Allured, sorry. Oh the shame! He's got pubs, you know.

Ah, but everyone is forgetting (or doesn't know about) their legendary double-header gig with Einsturzende Neubauten at the Kilburn National in - what was it, '83?

Terry Shannon, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Later, I think. 1986?

Dr. C, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My friend's nan couldn't get her head around their name, and would pronounce it "Shau-addy-a-day".
Drummer Romeo Challenger also played in satanic prog/hard rock band Black Widow, although not on their one decent album (the one with "Come to the Sabbat" on it).
I was present at the 1987 Neubauten/Showaddywaddy Kilburn show, as I recall it they killed the serious Germanic mood somewhat. Seemed like a Stevo coke bender kind of idea.

Other than all that, I got nothing.

They were one of the star guests on the quiz show I did back in 75. I still have my signed (by two) copy of "step two"

Mark G, Monday, 20 December 2021 23:37 (three years ago)

i always thought it was quite funny, but then i didn't have to endure it, and top trivia about Romeo Challenger being in Black Widow.

Showaddywaddy's Red Star album might have been my first non various artists record purchase. It was that or Darts' Everyone Plays Darts.

Russ Field, guitarist, is the only person from Berwick upon Tweed to have featured on a number one single.

The singer's book about their tour of UK caravan parks in the early 2000s has a foreword by Amanda Holden.

My disc set is "on its way" apparently

Mark G, Tuesday, 21 December 2021 12:33 (three years ago)

Dave Bartram's book is extensively discussed (by Taylor Parkes, David Stubbs, and my old Nottingham mate Al Needham), and quoted from at considerable length, in the most recent episode of the Chart Music podcast:

The section starts at 21:22, the book stuff starts at 30:36.
