Thank you thank you thank you thank you I've been soulsucking this for weeks.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

It's pretty bad though, right?

sean gramophone (Sean M), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

I DO! But, I'm not at home and can't use YSI at work, so I'm probably out of luck. Any kind-hearted type who wants to gmail it to me will have my eternal gratitude, however.

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

I'll sort you out when I've downloaded it, John.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

got you covered john justen

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

No ken, after you.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

You are now one step closer to sainthood...

xpost: Well, both of you are, I guess.

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

i'll sort john out then :)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

I like it.

NO

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Good people but not good cover. However, a week or so ago I heard Currituck Co. do a 15-20 minute live cover of "Feelin' on Yo Booty" that was incredibly beautiful and was delivered quite sincerely.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

i like it too, especially when they have to fight the laughter off

t0dd swiss (immobilisme), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

yeah, but i kinda wish it was them covering the remix

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

yeah, but i kinda wish it was them covering the remix

OTM. that's the "hot n fresh out the kitchen" one right? way better song.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

still i like this

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

i would rather have salt injected into my urethra.

you got it. "gimme dat TOOT TOOT/ gimme dat BEEP BEEP"

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

The concept of this is an abomination.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

Who want's to Hear R. Kelly's cover version of "I Am A Cinematographer"?

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

r. kelly should cover the "cum in your hair" one

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

This isn't as bad as I thought it would be.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

r. kelly should cover the "cum in your hair" one

is that the same one where he talks about fucking a mountain?

if he covered that he could have Dave Chapelle do that Godzilla skit where he fucks a volcano in the video...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

or that one in which Will does his sister

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

i guess, come to think of it, will oldham probably has a genuine soft spot for r. kelly

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

his puckered asshole

c/n (Cozen), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

Let's just say I'm not surprised they covered this particular version - because I suspect they're not even familiar with the definitive remix.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I wondered about that, too, Spencer.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Ooooh, how IRONIC!

Jena (JenaP), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

I got a minute in. could bear it no longer.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

LMBAO

brotherman, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

This is entertaining enough.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Will did this last year on his solo tour.

And kindly bear in mind over the past 10+ years he's covered Mariah Carey, The Cranberries, Madonna, "Kokomo", Tim McGraw, Sheryl Crow, Sade... this is not his first foray into the pop-spectrum.

I guess if tMG do it (and poorly at that), then it's some kind of genius?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

I bet Will really likes R. Kelly....why does everyone assume he doesn't, i dunno, like have a radio and listen to it...

I guess if tMG do it (and poorly at that), then it's some kind of genius?

snap!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

bad covers are bad covers.

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

why would they be familiar with this and not the remix?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

hmm yes - that makes no sense. what is/are tMG?

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

The Goats of Mountain

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

ah, thanks.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

maybe TMBG could do a version too?

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

I never heard this version on the radio.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

Hearing him crack up every 4 bars makes me doubt that he takes R. Kelly very seriously.

Jena (JenaP), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

i don't know why i didn't ask earlier, but is the girlish voice that of matt sweeney?

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

That cannot possibly be a man. Who is this girl and what happened to her sense of decency and shame? (Just being ironic here.)

Jena (JenaP), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Hearing him crack up every 4 bars makes me doubt that he takes R. Kelly very seriously.

it's a funny song! I'd be freaked out if somebody was humorless about Kells.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

I don't giggle when I do it at karaoke though. Except one time when I wasn't prepared the volume of the audience's "toot toot"'s.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

i suppose the idea of them covering the track is, in itself, slightly unexpected/ridiculous so of course he's laughing. i don't think they would have covered it if they didn't think it was a good song though.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

man, i'm gonna try and do this at my office's karaoke party tonight. pray that they give me the "toot toots" that i'll be in desperate need of.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

Do they censor themselves on saying shit?

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

I like it when Oldham does stuff like this, because as much as he's being a smart-ass, I think he also tries really hard to do the song justice out of a certain degree of respect (unlike, say, Nina Gordon). I think he likes doing unpredictable covers, but I don't think he'd do a song he doesn't really like.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i really don't read any irony in the song either. regardless of the giggles, i still feel like it's pretty sincere

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

I mean he really does sell the song. Plus he's been known to write songs about knockin' da boots a lil himself.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I think this is better than most of the Superwolf album.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

who's the girl on the track, though?

I don't even think R. Kelly takes R. Kelly very seriously.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

i like it

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

I would rather hear an electro-house version.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

Don't get me wrong, I quite like it too, but the fact that he decides to cover this kind of makes him sink a little in my eyes. I feel like he's missed the boat on the whole being ironic thing, like it's just hit him several years too late.

Jena (JenaP), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

And, for the third time already, who's the girl???

Jena (JenaP), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

Um, how familiar are you with Will Oldham?

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

Looks like he's thinking about making a "water"-fall... or as Jess Harvel said upthread "(g)imme some of that salty urethra (juice)".

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

i want to know who the girl is too.

hurting i'm curious what your take is. b/c i think will oldham has all sorts of issues around being cool etc. ... and you just never know if he's uber concerned with it and out of touch or uber concerned with it an ironically out of touch so therefore super in touch, or just not concerned at all (there could be a fourth option but i can't think that far). but in general this doesn't strike me as ironic exercise ... he sounds like he's enjoying himself and making some kind of 'buddy music' to use another ilmer's term - and will likes to sing about anything dirty. i can only imagine what his body was doing during all of that.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

My take is that he's a fairly consummate songwriter and he likes to mine in unexpected places. He also did a nu-metal sounding song with Tweaker of NIN, and it honestly sounded dead serious to me. He's also covered David Allen Coe songs. I only think there's humor here because the song is kind of funny and sexy, not because he's making fun of neo-R&B or something.

Yeah, I think he tries to project "cool" as much as the next musician, but I also think he has a genuinely original way of looking at songs.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I think he tries to project "cool" as much as the next musician, but I also think he has a genuinely original way of looking at songs."
- that's generally my feel too.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

I have all of his records Hurting, although I have never seen him live, so maybe it's me who's taking Will Oldham too seriously here. I have heard that track he did with Tweaker, and you're right, he does sound very sincere and into it, with no shade of irony in sight. Not a big fan of that track, or Oldham's other forays into electronica in general (Continental OP), but he does seem very open minded about other genres of music, and I don't really think that he's making fun of R&B here, but there's something that rubs me the wrong way here. Especially now that you mention David Allen Coe covers.

Jena (JenaP), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

I just realized that is INDEED the cover of R. Kelly's new record, that's great!

Jena (JenaP), Thursday, 30 June 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

gygax yr reaching

strng hlkngtn, Thursday, 30 June 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

The woman is probably whoever it was that was touring with him last summer, because I saw him twice and he did the song both times. Will and the woman stood facing each other when they did the song, and kinda gyrated to the beat. I don't remember him laughing at all, either. I thought they did a good job, but agree that the remix of Ignition would have been better.

Stingy (stingy), Thursday, 30 June 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

Okay I realise it's lame to link to my own blog but I think that Jordan's take on this cover is interesting and awesome and very worthy of more attention. See here.

It's obviously a kinda twee and indie fuxxor take but that's valid enough.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Could someone gmail this to me, pretty please?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

Uh, it's available at that link I pointed to.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

i enjoy your take

t0dd swiss (immobilisme), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

after listening to this, I think it's good.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
I went back and listened to this again and I actually think it's great. Jordan is totally OTM -- the dynamic between Oldham and the female singer is very hott.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

Meanwhile, this take is totally OFF THE MONEY.
