so many different types of music, but which is best:

1) 60's garage rock (e.g. Sonics, etc) 2) Classics from the Paradise Garage (as in Larry Levan) 3) what used to be called Garage befors UK Garage, er.. Todd Terry and stuff 4) UK Garage (speed garage, 2 step, etc...)

somebody clever already asked this. It was UNANIMOUSLY agreed that 1) was the only interesting option on any level.

5) Modern updates of original Garage...Insomniacs, the Woggles, Mono Men, Mummies...all that Estrus and Sympathy for the Record Industry type stuff.

if you live on mars, yes.

(1), as well as (2) and (3). I'm leaving out (4) solely because I wish they would come up with another name, because it's rare that 4 genres have the same name and I luv all of them, but I can't say because other fans don't luv the other genres and it's too much confusion so I am in the grip of a luv that dare not speak its name, like ol' radioactive-nutsack in Delany's "Aye and Gomorrah" in a world of four genders

(5)('Retro') - yeccch, the most useless shit imaginable. Mudhoney was OK but...here's how it works. The 60s bands genuinely wanted to be stars, and luckily they were in a time when crazy sounds, insider slang and 'attitood' was of premium importance (on the singles chart, true, but in those days that's all there was!)! While some people may be stretching it to describe it as 'avant-garde' - well even if it was, who cares? (The question should not be, 'Is it avant- garde', but more, 'If this is the avant, would I necessarily WANT the garde?), the upshot is that even - ESPECIALLY - the amateurish, the obvious hackwork, rip-offs etc., had some kind of weird energy behind them, because the only rules were, 1)It MUST be commercial, but 2)It's gotta be really FREAKY, as well! Besides that, anything goes! 'Nuggets' is closer in spirit to modern R&B than it is to revivalists of ANY 'Stripe'! Heh heh. (That was terrible, I actually like the WS's but it was too good to resist!)

I too like all four. I am most versed in 1) and 4) and intending to learn more about 3) and 2) in that order.

Where do the massed ranks of the Quo army (Unrivalled, Respected) fit into all this?

fritz, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, thats almost as confusing as Hardcore (Minor Threat, Badbrains) vs Hardcore (Altern8). Although I guess the second is more properly called 'Ardcore.

Lord Custos, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

surely 1-3 are called gar-ahzh while 4 = garridge?

All Four = Ace. Fritz = REVISIONIST which is WORSE than =ing ROCKIST!

The interesting thing about the relationship between US garage and UK garage is that it's actually very strong if you listen to them closely. Play Basement Jaxx and Corina Joseph's "Lonely" (from when they were US garage classicists) and then play, I dunno, something from Sunship circa '98, and it could almost be the same artist. (people don't, as a rule, tend to notice just how much UK Garage plays like a condensed encyclopedia of all dance music). And there's a strong acknowledgement of the role of New York and the Paradise Garage within two-step *still* - there's a new dark 2-step producer called "Es-G" (!) whose tracks are all vaguely conceptual pieces about New York.

the notion that anything would be UNANIMOUSLY agreed upon here = clearly a cheap attempt for laffs

fritz, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the real revisionists around here are the ones downplaying the once mighty massed ranks of the Quo army

fritz, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fritz, I know. I tend not to use capitals when I'm annoyed. I put stars around every second word or so instead.
