3. Toto

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

They aren't insignificant to the Radio 2 drive-time massive, though.

4. Garth Brooks.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

5. Kelly Clarkson (I have no idea if this is true or not though, but she's never made much of an impact on me, if that counts as some sort of arbitration)

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

6. DAVE MATTHEWS

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

7. Creed

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

Yes, Chicago, with their #1 single you still hear on local radio daily and their 3 top ten albums are totally obscure.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, can Geir and DJ Martian have some sort of "being wrong" face off?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

So far this list has me wanting to move to the U.K.

Palomino (Palomino), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

From what I've read over the years, Kiss appear to have been the touchstone for two decades' worth of American rockers who followed in their wake. And yet, on this side of the Atlantic, if they're known at all, it's for the lamentable Crazy Crazy Nights.

Which reminds me:

16. Van Halen

Everybody knows Jump, of course, but while Dave and Eddie may have been heroes to most Americans, they never meant shit to the Old World.

Palomino (Palomino), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

KISS

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 30 June 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

Some particularly glaring errors on Tony Blair Warner's list: Prince, Outkast, Jay-Z, Lil Jon, Tupac (currently #1 on the UK singles chart), Biggie, Patsy Cline, Bruce Springsteen.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 30 June 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

Lil Jon just had a top 10 hit! The kids love the crunk here.

Heart

timb, Thursday, 30 June 2005 10:31 (twenty years ago)

8 top 40 singles and 7 top 40 albums in the UK - hardly.

(anyway, aren't they canadian?)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 30 June 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

And who else? Journey, Patti Smyth & Scandal, Melissa Manchester, Nicolette Larson, Rick Springfield, Grand Funk Railroad, Black Oak Arkansas, John Cougar Mellencamp, Jewel, Third Eye Blind, Rob Zombie, Boyz N Da Hood, Keith Urban, Josh Groban, Kenny Chesney, Hilary Duff, G-Unit, Hoobastank, Switchfoot, 3 Doors Down, George Strait, John Mayer, Kid Rock, Rascal Flatts... enough already. Vive la difference!

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 30 June 2005 10:37 (twenty years ago)

...but also, and sadly, James Carr, William Bell, Aaron Neville, Shuggie Otis, Darrell Banks, Garnet Mimms, the Chambers Brothers, Afrika Bambaataa...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 30 June 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

I had no idea Heart were so popular in the UK

timb, Thursday, 30 June 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

G-Unit prob'ly have some audience over here - there's enough kids who'll buy anything Fiddy/Eminem related (including my oldest).

Me and a lot of my Metal Mates were very into Kiss in the early 80s, including the pre-Lick It Up stuff, so I don't think they count.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Thursday, 30 June 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

Has anybody said Buster Poindexter yet?

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Thursday, 30 June 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

Did people listen to Kyuss in Britain?

Seuss, Thursday, 30 June 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

bizarrely, despite the highest earning figure in hip-hop in the mid-late 90s, Master P never really made an impact in the UK.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 30 June 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

Paul Revere & The Raiders

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 30 June 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Uh, hello, Rick Springfield was AUSTRALIAN. I think he might've gained his American citizenship by the time he was a soap star (on "General Hospital") or by the time he released his first album (which I think was after he was established on GH), but he was born & raised in Australia.

And Corey Hart? Canadian, from Montreal. He was also raised in Mexico and one other place I can't remember. But yeah, pure Canadian at the end of the day and is still living in Canada with his wife, who's a singer.

> Afrika Bambaataa

What?!

This from http://www.hiphop-network.com/articles/djarticles/bamstory.asp

Urban spaceman Afrika Bambaataa and producer Arthur Baker, plus musician John Robie, were the trio behind a musical revolution called "Planet Rock", Bambaataa's 1982 single with Soul Sonic Force. Following the impact of "Planet Rock", UK groups made Electro-boogie pilgrimages to Baker's studio in Manhattan: Freeze's "IOU" rocketed jazz funk into the infosphere but more significantly, New Order's "Blue Monday" launched indie dancing and sold massively on 12". Also breaking and robot dancing, the acrobatic and simulated machine dances that drew many adolescents into the alien zone of black science fiction. Bleep music was one consequence of this. Hardly adequate to describe and encompass the protozoic chaos of New York Nu Groove, Detroit Techno, Chicago House, Next came techno.
