Did Elmer and Bugs ruin this for you, too?

Stoner Guy, Thursday, 30 June 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

I'll always associate it with Apocalypse Now.

Wait, 'ruin'? Are you nuts?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 June 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

I'll always associate it with Apocalypse Now.

A fave MST3K joke of mine from Warrior of the Lost World -- as two helicopters sweep over a forest engaged in a (fairly lame) chase/battle sequence, Joel and bots start humming the familiar Wagnerian notes...and then break into "Kill the Wabbit" for the final part.

Kill The Wabit is brilliant. Best Bugs Cartoon ever.

"What did you expect? A happy ending?"

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 30 June 2005 10:37 (twenty years ago)

So is it "Flight of the Valkyries" or "Ride of the Valkyries" or both? I've seen it both ways, and I suspect that "Flight" is incorrect and mistaken for "Flight of the Bumblebee" .. but I can't find a totally definitive answer on the internets... Since the Valkyrie(s) "flee", "flight" makes sense, but still I think it's "Ride", based on recordings of the opera.

Well, the Valkyries bring the dead sould to Valhalla and typically that is a trip that takes place through the sky, so "flight" makes sense. This is what annoys me about the Bugs Bunny cartoon is that I can't even think about the real meaning or visualize the sounds as these majestic beings taking dead warriors to the land of the Gods. All I see is Elmer with his spear and magic helmet. Spear and magic helmet? Spear and magic helmet! Magic helmet? Magic HEL-MEEEEET! Instead of something truly awe-inspiring, which I imagine it would have on me unadulterated, I see a little bald douchebag with a pointy metal helmet sliding around his bald head.

i've only ever seen 'ride of...' - maybe it's the helicopters in AN that have led to the confusion?

the fact that elmer trumps wagner's intention is more an indication of the latter's weakness in ref.this bit of the um gesamtkunstwerk i think

ie it wz (i think) composed a long time before most of the rest; certainly it sticks out like an ad-break in a movie on TV whenever it arrives

You may think so, but I think this reasoning is completely faulty and wrong. One time associations often create permanent memories. How many times did I see this cartoon growing up before I ever heard it in any other form? Multiply the repeat viewing effect by the fact that I couldn't stand the cartoon because it was beyond my interests at the time. Abracapocus.

OMG! I was watching this only yesterday! Classique!

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 30 June 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

you may think that reasoning is completely faulty and wrong but i think it is completely faultless and right!!

(anyway the other point is the key one: valkeries is just NOT wagner's greatest moment, and thus quite easily overthrown by stronger better art) (other examples: nick drake)

(chuck jones > wagner)

I must disagree on the "Best Bugs Cartoon Ever" tag. Ergo, I will throw it out to the larger ILM masses via its own thread!!!!

"If I didn't know this was Hossenpfeffer, I'd swear it was Carrot!"

That's my fav Bugs cartoon, just for that line.
