I'm most surprised there hasn't been a Steel Pole Bath Tub thread (unless there was and it was acronymed or misspelled in the archives)

Anyway, more details on my views of the releases later.. but I figure enough of you could get the ball rollin'

in brief: SPBT... Miracle Of Sound In Motion is the masterpiece.. I really like the major label one after, and also the "unfinished" one. I like parts of the first two albums.. Tulip never did it for me. on the split with Unwound, their side is amazing...

Milk Cult : GRAND GRAND GRAND.. all 4.. Love God, C.C. Nova / Dispatch, Burn Or Bury, and Project M-13... each for completely difference reasons

The Nein : eh. Not really feeling it.

Dale's art : classic all the way through.

I really need to dig out this stuff and relisten. The one time I saw them live in 1992 they were absolutely monstrous.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 June 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

"Train to Miami" is one of the best rock songs ever, period.

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

I never got to see them live. I was supposed to see them with Trumans Water opening in Long Beach circa 1994, but I had to leave before Steel Pole because my mom was visiting that evening. :( (i.e. stupidest reason for leaving a rock show ever. She should have waited two hours.)

i saw The Nein a couple weeks ago....they were really good live...it was cool to see him do all the live tape manipulation stuff....all with cassettes!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 30 June 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

That's almost a rockist approach these days. *flees*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 June 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Does Dale draw Batgirl?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 30 June 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Nope that's Nein bassist Casey Burns.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 30 June 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Thanks.

PAUL BUNYON CAN'T SAVE YOU NOW!!!!!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

I agree about "miracle of sound in motion" and the split with Unwound being their best releases.

But what about DUH?

DUH-blowhard.lp > anything by SPBT.

Never heard The Nein or Milk Cult.

Ellis, Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

I don't know about the Duh album being better, but it's certainly underrated. It features one of the members of Steel Pole that's not Dale, and then C.C. Nova (who I think is Dale??) guests on a short track. But yeah, Duh rules.

the ALTERNATIVE TENTACLES Duh is a different story altogether, and one of the fucking greatest underground rock n' roll prank stories ever.

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

And not hearing Milk Cult, but hearing Steel Pole or Duh, is a crime that's gotta be rectified NOW! :)

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Which Milk Cult out of the ones you mentioned should i check out first then?

Ellis, Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

Good question. Burn Or Bury is probably the most accessible "rock" album of theirs and makes a great starter, especially if you like Duh's Blowhard. It was Dale's all-star album.. features Mike Patton, Blake of Jawbreaker, Carla Buzolich, Mark Davies (Thinking Fellers)... finding it is another question. It's not impossible to find used, but don't wait too long.

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

the first two Milk Cult albums are mostly noisy tape loop, stop-start vinyl, noise/rock scapes of some sort.. well Love God is. Milk Cult C.C. Nova Dispatch is some sort of intermediary stripped down tape-loop album that's brilliant, but for completely different reasons. Project M-13 is great too, but more refinement on the more downtempo-ey, textured aspects of Milk Cult.

Again, they're all great, just different flavors of great.

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

So you're saying they're great, then.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

they all suck. I'm a bag of lies..

and dicks.

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

"Burn or bury" it is then. Checking amazon as i type.

What exactly was the deal with the A.T DUH then?

Ellis, Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

The story behind The Unholy Handjob, as told by me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

Ha. Good lord.

Thanks.

Ellis, Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Sorry I started another thread, Ned. But it's Bathtub, not Bath Tub!
anyway...Butterfly Love is awesome.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

I saw Steelpole Bathtub sometime in the earlies nineties at the Marquee, with the Melvins and Duh! also on the bill. Think it was just after Lurch. Loved Buttefly Love (was that the first one?), got it after I heard "I Am Sam I Am" on John Peel. "Im a totally worthless, beat piece of dogmeat Im a movin man... the time flies and on it I ride, I am Sam I am...". God I have vivid memories of that record. Never bought anything after Lurch though, just sort of lost interest.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

i liked the nein's first ep, the jury's still out on the full length.

i love both casey's and dale's work.

three years pass...

Steel Pole is back and playing live in Portland this September. I saw them once in maybe '97 at Satyricon with Gern Blanston opening. Awesome show and way way over capacity. Nuts and mind-bending. I thought Miracle... was too slick when it came out, but it has ended up being my favorite.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 6 July 2008 00:02 (seventeen years ago)

They're supposed to be playing with Neurosis on the same bill in Seattle around the same time, but not sure if that's still the case or not.

Mackro Mackro, Sunday, 6 July 2008 00:09 (seventeen years ago)

So, did Dale move to Portland then? If so, I guess Minneapolis didn't work out I guess?

Mackro Mackro, Sunday, 6 July 2008 00:09 (seventeen years ago)

two years pass...

Heard a bunch of stuff from Tulip onwards back in the day (and loved it all), but I'm just hearing Butterfly Love for the first time and OMFG where has this album been all my life?
