grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 1 July 2005 08:56 (nineteen years ago)

bedsitter!!!!!!!!!

[wets self]

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 1 July 2005 08:57 (nineteen years ago)

argh, they don't tell you WHICH mix of the song it is! does the packaging (on #1) actually bother to do this?

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 1 July 2005 09:03 (nineteen years ago)

yes, but i'm not 100% convinced all of it is correct.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 1 July 2005 09:12 (nineteen years ago)

no i think this clears it up

piscesboy, Friday, 1 July 2005 09:17 (nineteen years ago)

i'm so buying this tomorrow.

volume one is absolutely fantastic music for the gym, by the way. [/gym wanker]

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 1 July 2005 09:22 (nineteen years ago)

What an excellent line-up (that "Night Train" 12-inch is one of the best things ever! Rusty Egan's finest six minutes!).

Now all we need is for the actual original 12" of "Hard Times/Love Action" by the Human League to be reissued (the "Love Action" 12" mix on Vol 1 isn't the same thing).

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 1 July 2005 09:47 (nineteen years ago)

i have the "night train" bassline funking round my head, and it's annoying me already.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 1 July 2005 09:48 (nineteen years ago)

in my first year at oxford i was dj'ing at a party and played the 12-inch of Chant No 1. this guy tom, who was a friend of mine from new jersey, stormed over raving about it as in GOD THAT'S BRILLIANT TINA'S GOTTA HEAR THIS WHEN I GET BACK

tina being tina weymouth, who was his cousin.

i don't know whether that had any aesthetic impact on subsequent talking heads reissues.

but i also taped "white car in germany" by the associates for him, and there is definitely some of that ambience in the fadeout to "burning down the house"...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 1 July 2005 09:56 (nineteen years ago)

Fuck, there's some good songs on that! "Party Fears Two", ooh!

like WOAH!!

piscesboy, Friday, 1 July 2005 10:13 (nineteen years ago)

Nice to have "Soul Train" by Swansway back in circulation.

Ooh, "Don't Talk To Me About Love" - the sexiest TOTP performance ever...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 1 July 2005 10:13 (nineteen years ago)

I sold my 12" of "Don't Talk To Me About Love" to a friend, and have regretted it ever since.

I've actually got 13 of the Vol.2 selections on the original 12-inchers. The extended "Bedsitter", "Favourite Shirts" and "Genius Of Love" are especially fine.

If it was "one in, one out", I'd drop Belouis Some and add Mari Wilson's "Baby It's You".

The best part of the Council Collective's "Soul Deep" 12-inch is the interview with the two striking Nottinghamshire miners on the flip; I stuck it on my blog a few months ago.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 1 July 2005 10:40 (nineteen years ago)

Whoa, I didn't see that Altered Images was on it. Marcello, is that true? Do tell. Grogan was absolutely swoonworthy in Gregory's Girl so I'd love to hear about this TOTP performance.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 10:43 (nineteen years ago)

was that the one with the breast japery?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 1 July 2005 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

we were watching it in the Senior Common Room. Grogan + sashay + winking at camera + clad in leather = mass involuntary ejaculation.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 1 July 2005 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

hope you cleaned it up afterwards

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 1 July 2005 10:58 (nineteen years ago)

No Dr C, I meant verbal ejaculations as per Greyfriars School books, e.g. "Gosh!" ejaculated Wharton, "Beast!" ejaculated Bunter, &c.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 1 July 2005 11:00 (nineteen years ago)

Grogan + sashay + winking at camera + clad in leather = mass involuntary ejaculation

I'd love to see a video of that, minus Marcello et al losing self control of course.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 1 July 2005 11:00 (nineteen years ago)

claire grogan is not sexy. not even in leather. not even sahaying. not even winking.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 1 July 2005 11:02 (nineteen years ago)

Fortunately, you are incorrect.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 1 July 2005 11:03 (nineteen years ago)

i tried marcello. they all told me i was wrong. but...no. i may be abnormal sexually.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 1 July 2005 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

i have never found kylie sexy so maybe there's a hemisphere-related sexuality differential at work here.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 1 July 2005 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

i think ana da silva circa grogan is pretty nice.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 1 July 2005 11:09 (nineteen years ago)

I bought the last one for my brother, but I 'taped' it. I was hopoing they would wait till his next birthday before bringing this one out. Nice to see Lloyd Cole getting a look in again.

Actually, that would be my criticism, if I was going to criticise it: too many of the same artists again.

I think Clare Grogan is nice.

Peter Stringbender (PJ Miller), Friday, 1 July 2005 11:10 (nineteen years ago)

I seem to remember the 'Reflex' 12" being interminable. WHy-y-y-y-yi? Boom-crash-tish-tosh! Why-y-y-y-yi? Boom-ba-da-boom! Why-y-y-y-yi don't? Slip-slap-slop! Why-y-y-y-yi-yi don't? Fart-squlech-burp! I'm not sure I ever got any further than that actually.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 1 July 2005 11:15 (nineteen years ago)

Damn, I missed the bass bits!

NickB (NickB), Friday, 1 July 2005 11:15 (nineteen years ago)

Actually the 7" was pretty much the same.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 1 July 2005 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

its just more songs you already know in longer versions. are any of these versions worth the extra time? (don't know meself...wondering)

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 1 July 2005 11:19 (nineteen years ago)

BLT 12" is good, but the Soultrain 12" is overlong I think.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 1 July 2005 11:24 (nineteen years ago)

I'm a sucker for 12 inches. Oh wait...

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 1 July 2005 11:27 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah, there's an MP3 of the 'Soultrain' 12" on the Scarlet Fantastic homepage somewhere. 'No Memory' is there too, which is terrible, but I happen to adore it!

NickB (NickB), Friday, 1 July 2005 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, here it be.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 1 July 2005 11:29 (nineteen years ago)

thnx nick

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 1 July 2005 11:37 (nineteen years ago)

marcello of the remove is correct about la grogan: she is lovely. and, as i've said elsewhere round these parts, the 12" of "i could be happy" is a work of almighty wonder.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 1 July 2005 11:52 (nineteen years ago)

Is there a thread for 12"s/ 80s Vol 1

David Gunnip (David Gunnip), Friday, 1 July 2005 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

if there was, i never posted on it.

so it can't have been very good.

:)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 1 July 2005 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

yeah there was, i think i started it but you can't ever find it cause it's too short or something. words shorter than 4 letters can't be searched? what's that all about?

piscesboy, Friday, 1 July 2005 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

you know, I love Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy, but at my old party I played it after Once in a Lifetime, then went out to dance w/ friends and the girl I was dancing with said "I really love the music you're playing tonight, untill this Gay Caribbean Boat Cruise stuff came on".

Best description of Kid Creole ever?

I would like an extended Favorite Shirts on 12". I played some Haircut 100 on Beats In Space:

http://www.beatsinspace.net/playlists.html

scroll down to April 28th.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

untill this Gay Caribbean Boat Cruise stuff came on

roffle!

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
so what was with the late tracklisting change, then? (full details on the original amazon link at the top of the page.)

i got this the other day and am about halfway through. it really is joyously ace. i have never heard the 12" of bedsitter; the little rap thing in the middle has put a whole new spin on it. interesting also that it moves into the second person and is addressed to a girl, while the rest of the song is in the first person.

anyway.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 25 July 2005 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...

Volume 4 out now!

pisces, Saturday, 13 October 2007 11:10 (seventeen years ago)

I've got the 80s Dance edition of this. The version of "I Feel Love" is epic and brutal all at once.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 13 October 2007 11:14 (seventeen years ago)

i'm against the 12"/80s

jokes

i think the new one is vol 5: there was vol 1, vol 2, dance, pop, and now groove.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Saturday, 13 October 2007 11:26 (seventeen years ago)

POP i'd totally forgotten about cause it was rub. how comes they aren't doing the 90s yet? they're really wringing the 80s dry i mean each box has 3 cds! a rare 90s 12" mixes box is surely just the ticket.

pisces, Saturday, 13 October 2007 12:49 (seventeen years ago)

it was sort of an 80s phenomenon dontcha think?

i haven't got the pop one. looks okay to me. the dance one i had too many of already.

they should do even more.

i am currently listening to 'pull up to the bumper (12")'

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Saturday, 13 October 2007 13:21 (seventeen years ago)

"I Feel Love" in any form is better than none at all, I think

Bimble, Saturday, 13 October 2007 13:31 (seventeen years ago)

Bimble I owe you mail. Been drunk/knackered/miserable, soz.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 13 October 2007 13:35 (seventeen years ago)

anyways 'groove' is almighty. there's always the 'i already own that' problem (and i don't think the 4m 1s 'know how' is a 12" mix :/) but on the other hand i never owned 'all night long' by the mary jane girls and now i do : )

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Sunday, 14 October 2007 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

uh also 'white lines' 12" is a minute shorter than the version i got. but luckily it's totally different also.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Sunday, 14 October 2007 20:51 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

they ought to do more of these imo

special guest stars mark bronson, Sunday, 8 February 2009 17:48 (sixteen years ago)

Never got the "Tommy Boy Megamix" on one, did they.
