Can they turn this into a proper comeback????

jumper, Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

Hopefully not.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

hopefully not, they should just leave it like this, in case it all goes horribly wrong.

ppp, Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

Yes, so I can go and see them live, having passed up the opportunity years ago. But just for one gig. That I can tickets for.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

+ ...get...

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

that was incredible and they kept the session players to a minimum (one other guitarist and one vocalist). if they toured I'd go. they should only do it once though.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

also I think I'd be pretty surprised if they didn't do a few more shows because what the hell, they're getting pretty old, maybe they'd all like to buy a few more islands. might as well make the dough while they can. it's not like they're going to disappoint anyone by doing it.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

i thought they were the highlight of what otherwise was either people performing at expectation (madonna, ie. good but i expected that) or lower (god stevie you're so amazing, who made you agree to have rob thomas on the same fucking stage with you?!?!?!?! at least you showed him up, easily).

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 3 July 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

even stence is on drugs >:o

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 09:18 (twenty years ago)

nope. floyd's "comfortably numb" still makes the scissor sisters as irrelevant as, well, they've always been. wtf is wrong with your country, mark?1?? that shit is terrible! and they have a high slot!

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 3 July 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)

scissor sisters > floyd despite merely mediocre mix and merely functional song vehicles

the PF sound wz great, reminded me of madonna drowned world set: but she has (or had - i missed her yesterday) the songs and the performance er chops also

(also better intersection w.ballardian mindset)

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 09:38 (twenty years ago)

pink floyd hate is k-boring of course - esp.back in the day when it wz hack's default option - and so i have spent c.25 yrs tryin to "get it"

i do not get it

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

hey, "my country" can surely claim a BIT of credit for PF if that is yr particular "stands the test of time" popster tip?

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

hahai sound like my canadian friend: "Live is totally a sucky shill waste-of-time AND HEY! WHY IS THE CHOICE OF BANDS REPRESENTING MY COUNTRY SO EMBARRASSING!"

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

what the hell did you listen to in the first half of the seventies, mark s? probably the only band i listened to in 75 i am not ashamed of today is pink floyd.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Sunday, 3 July 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

t rex a bit i guess, my parents old beatles records, eartha kitt, a big buncha classical stuff (i wz in school choirs and orchestras and studied composed music "seriously"): very little pop or rock tho, i only "discovered" it c.1976, when i arrived at a school where i mixed w.everyone who brought those little phillips cassette players w.all their favourite albums taped and tracks lovingly listed in rotring pen

i grew up in a v.isolated v.rural home, and never "discovered" music radio (too busy listenin to the foundation trilogy on radio 4 yurk)

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

i failed my teen proficency test :(

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

wow yr old ;-)

i'd love to see the floyd live, yesterday was very impressive. david gilmoure does look a bit like syd now doesn't he.

rizzx (rizzx), Sunday, 3 July 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

"old beatles records" = some of them as dustily ancient as SEVEN YEARS!! memories of nineveh and tyre seemed not so distant

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

Pink Floyd spot = closure.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Sunday, 3 July 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

I don't have cable television so I only saw the 2 1/2 hour "highlights" set. They only showed "Wish You Were Here"... it was pretty crap.

nicholas de jong (nicholas de jong), Sunday, 3 July 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

1. leave roger alone.
2. yes, mark DO YOU SEE - pf is evidence that once your country did good things, musically.
3. c'mon, man, the scissor sisters! gimme a break, nell carter! they're fucking horrible. and nowhere near as good as the late, great sylvester.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 3 July 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

mark grout otm. Last night was a perfect, a unique conjunction of timing and circumstance, anything else would be anticlimactic and only disappoint.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 3 July 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

often a live show is better when it features things that
a. aren't dead, however great
b. aren't merely evidence that things were once better
c. aren't actually evidence that things were once WAY WORSE

step away from the bong and into the sunlight my children

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Only caught a little bit of it on ABC last night. Why was the coverage so poor? Camera shots were either needlessly tight (I don't need to see Dave Gilmour's molars, thank you very much) or too distant (and ABC didn't even let them finish "Money"). Did they ever look at each other during proceedings?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 3 July 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Overall, am I alone in thinking Live 8 was rather a big muted non-event otherwise?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 3 July 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

QUIET ALEX YOU'LL GIVE AWAY THE SECRET!!!!

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 3 July 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

Yes, lots of wistful glances from Waters to Gilmour. Though few reciprocated.

mark, my bong remained untouched last night, in fact I don't even know where it is.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 3 July 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

? lots of it was much more fun than pink floyd

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

well at least we can say Live8 achieved something! Excitement for a Pink Floyd tour!

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 3 July 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

(btw, Snoop and Roxy ruled - I hear Neil Young did well but I left work before that)

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 3 July 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

i missed snoop! i wz bein molested by an actual real doggy dogg in parliament hill :(

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

Pink I got to see thanks to MTV at a pal's, I can see why people like listening to this at home, not sure why they'd want to stand up during it

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 3 July 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

or are able to

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

I really do hope Neil Young was impressive, otherwise the best performance at the Canadian show was Deep Purple and that's just wrong.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 3 July 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

d00d!! what abt:
http://www.mediaprod.fr/siteperso/csi/warrick06.jpg

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

i liked the crane shot during their set which glided up to reveal that power-station from the Animals sleeve (or something that looked like it?), but its effect was a bit confusing ("they're really here!" - don't they all live rather nearby anyway?? not to mention the powerstation still standing in a skyline free of flying doompigs kind of undermines their whole thing a little, no? like isn't apocalyptic gloominess generally deployed at least partly for prophetic power?)

jones (actual), Sunday, 3 July 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

no it's the actual real battersea power station (of animals fame if you don't actually live in london, where it's a highly visible landmark), it's abt a mile away from hyde park

except it's not a power station any more, it's (quite rightly) a protected building which (sadly) they can't find a use for

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

if it was in montreal it would be condos already :(

warrick was the sha-na-na of live8 for sure

jones (actual), Sunday, 3 July 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

interweb info on smoky mirrors and their trip hop stylings is scanty

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

i would definitely pay a no doubt exorbitant amount of money to see them play. i'd pay triple that if syd came on stage, even just to wave hello.
