Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

your dad is very cool

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

keep it all! all of it is worth listening to. except maybe the jam.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

Coolest dad ever.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

hstencil otm except I'd give Sound Affects a spin

I'll personally vouch for:

Au Pairs - Playing With A Different Sex
The Only Ones - Even Serpents Shine
David Bowie - Scary Monsters

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

He also had a whole other pile of stuff which included a couple of things i wasn't interested in but then about 50 artists i'd never heard of. Actually, hold on i'll type out what other stuff it was and see if anyone can reccommend any of that too.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

dude miccio you don't like discreet music?!?!!!??!??

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard it!

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

somehow i don't see you liking it. i was being facetious.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

I'd definitely spin it if I did though. I have both Fripp/Eno albums!

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

eh, fripp. those are like the only eno-related recs i don't have.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

sound affects and the gift will be disappointing but not as much as that BRAIN sampler which you could get for next to nothing everywhere in the late 70s and NO WONDER

four be two may not have aged well: john lydon's brother jimmy's band

haha or maybe it now sounds better than flowers of romance

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

the fripp/eno makes for nice off-to-sleep drones

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

dude mark you don't like BRAIN!?!???!???

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

Ok heres this list of stuff he has that was a complete mystery to me:

Planet Waves - Moon Glow
The Revolutionary Ensemble - Manhattan Cycles
Jazz Warriors - 'Out Of Many, One People'
The Colorblind James Experience - Why Should I Stand Up?
Barclay James Harvest - XII
Tomita - Pictures At An Exhibition
Holly Near and Inti-Illimani - Sing To Me The Dream
John Hiatt - Ring The Family
Jean-luc Ponty - Civilized Evil
The Neville Brothers - Yellow Moon
The Band - The Last Waltz

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

i'd like to hear a fripp/earth collaboration. with the sound of dylan carson blowing bobby's head off with a shotgun.

xpost - MANHATTAN CYCLES = TOTALLY AWESOME!!!!

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

dude stence that particular sampler is very lame

or so i thought when i bought it for next to nothing in the late 70s and sold for EVEN LESS i'll be bound

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

It's really exciting he is excavating the basement and he claims to have another two boxes of vinyl down there. And since he doesn't have a vinyl player anymore he says i can have the pick.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

what's on it mark?

xpost seriously hari take them all.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

also the last waltz is just sorta so-so but if your dad has the s/t and music from big pink, you need them asap!!!!

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

He might do in one of these other boxes

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Thanks Mark! And everybody! I'm overwhelmed as to what to listen to my attention span is V. short.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

stence i totally can't remember now who was on it :(

sorry hari i fucked that table up a bit

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

Also he had an original pressing of 'Still' by Joy Division and wondered if this was worth anything?

is it a kind of hardback gatefold: not just stiff cardboard, but a very hard hessian-covered thing? if so, i think it might be worth something (but probably not more than 20 quid). if it's just stiff cardboard, i don't think it's worth much at all.

The Human League - Travelogue

oh man, this is such an awesome album. so, so good. shame he didn't have/give you "reproduction" too, but hey. you can get it on CD for a fiver, i suppose (although you miss the fantastic sleeve).

The Neville Brothers - Yellow Moon

is that the one with "with god on our side" on it? if so, my dad has it too. i used to love it when i was a teenager.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

I listened to Tomita and it was odd. I definitly didn't hate it, i quite liked it.

I think i'll put The Human League on now!

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Hari A$hur$t, most of these records you'll probably want nothing to do with. in fact, why don't you just put them out on the curb. i run a vinyl recycling plant, so i'll just drop by and pick em up, cool? seriously, i won't even charge you...

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Sunday, 3 July 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 3 July 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

I've seen quite a lot of love for Tomita on ILM!!
Do a search and see.

The Revolutionary Ensemble are fucking great.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Sunday, 3 July 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

Crass - Penis Envy - Don't know it, though I can imagine how it sounds.
Au Pairs - Playing With A Different Sex - Great.
The Only Ones - Even Serpents Shine - Is this the one with Another Girl, another planet either way bound to be good
Cluster & Eno - Cluster & Eno - Excellent
The Human League - Travelogue - DITTO
Brian Eno - Discreet Music - DITTO
Brian Eno - Ambient 4 On Land - DITTO
Public Imagine Limited - Flowers Of Romance - Hmmm, not the best disco album ever.
The Jam - Sound Affects - Best Jam album, if you like the Jam that is.
David Bowie - Scary Monsters - Excellent
Various Artists - Rock On Brain (Compilation of Electronic German artists) - Don't know it
Four Be Two - One Of The Lads - Only thing I ever heard was rotten, but that was 25 years ago
Echo And The Bunnymen - "Shine So Hard" - Is this the compilation? VG
The Jam - The Gift Not the best Jam album, he's trying to get funky.
Planet Waves - Moon Glow - Don't know it
The Revolutionary Ensemble - Manhattan Cycles - Like the name, probably won't live up to it.
Jazz Warriors - 'Out Of Many, One People' DITTO
The Colorblind James Experience - Why Should I Stand Up? Novelty world music.
Barclay James Harvest - XII - I will let others comment on this.
Tomita - Pictures At An Exhibition - Japanese bonkers new age, prob worth a spin
Holly Near and Inti-Illimani - Sing To Me The Dream - Sounds rub
John Hiatt - Ring The Family - Depenndable (i.e dull) singer songwriter
Jean-luc Ponty - Civilized Evil - Is this the violin guy? Better off with Ed Alleyne Johnson if you must listen to that kind of stuff.
The Neville Brothers - Yellow Moon - Great voices, dull production (Bloodsucker Lanois)
The Band - The Last Waltz - Both dull and exciting in roughly equal measure. Van the Man is pick of the bunch. Better seen than heard.

Cool Dad by the way.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 3 July 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

none of that is valuable. you should just give it to me. or burn it.

[im kidding. its all good. your dad is awesome.]

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 3 July 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

ok son give me back my records

Hari A$hur$t'$ Cool Dad, Sunday, 3 July 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

I reckon my Dad could post here.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 3 July 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

old ppl are cool: it's proven by science

old mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

Where is the love for Penis Envy?!?

My favorite Crass album by far.

Also Au Pairs, all the Eno, Scary Monsters, and the PIL record (which I really like, more than the first but not as much as Second Edition/Metal Box).

Good stuff, mostly. I'd be suspicious of the Near/Inti-Illimani collab as I have mostly unimpressive records by both.

sleeve (sleeve), Sunday, 3 July 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

I own many of those records. And I'm a dad now. But my kids ain't getting them.

mike a, Sunday, 3 July 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Fuck, I'd keep every one of those! Especially these:

Au Pairs - Playing With A Different Sex
Public Image Limited - Flowers Of Romance
David Bowie - Scary Monsters
Echo And The Bunnymen - "Shine So Hard"

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 3 July 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

i think scary monsters is weak

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

well not weak actually at all, but ugly - i never listen to it

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

I listened to Side A earlier and it didn't seem as great as Low, for instance. It was kind of spooky though. I really liked Side A of the Au Pairs.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 3 July 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

Shine So Hard is the Echo and the Bunnymen live EP, and showcases more than anything else how great a live band they were.

Colorblind James Experience were from Rochester NY and I bet were students at Eastman. Calculatedly quirky, but I still got a laugh out of it in the 1980s.

I think everyone else has covered the high points. Remember to say THANKS DAD.

sympathizer (sympathizer), Sunday, 3 July 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

Also he had an original pressing of 'Still' by Joy Division and wondered if this was worth anything?

Original pressing? That means it has "Twenty-four Hours" then! (Which has been omitted from every other pressing and from the CD version.)

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 3 July 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

In other words, it's probably worth a bit more (how much, though, I won't conjecture) if "Twenty-four Hours" is on it.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 3 July 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

Penis Envy is obviously the best thing listed. But the other stuff is pretty cool too. On that original list. Actually, everything on that first list is worth hearing. Some only once. Some a hundred times.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 4 July 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

Hari, did you thank your dad for this vinyl, or did you grumble about it and start playing your own CDs in front of him before slinking off to your room?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 4 July 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

Discreet Music is one of the worst albums ever made.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 4 July 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

Original pressing? That means it has "Twenty-four Hours" then! (Which has been omitted from every other pressing and from the CD version.)

It was on all of the vinyl versions - just not listed on the sleeve.

The Hessian sleeve as described above is one of the few worth money (thick, hardcover-book-like, with ribbon on the spine) - especially if it's in mint condition.

Another is the Italian Base Records mis-pressing which used the wrong master (listen for studio chatter after "Exercise One").

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Monday, 4 July 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

TOMITA is the jam.

Hand Shapes (nordicskilla), Monday, 4 July 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

you should be happy your dad gave you these records after you were so nasty to him about that dinner he cooked!

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 4 July 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

yeah, that was fucking uncalled her. When I'm old and my kids are little shits, I'll throw my records at them.

Hand Shapes (nordicskilla), Monday, 4 July 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

uncalled for

Hand Shapes (nordicskilla), Monday, 4 July 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

One side of "One of the Lads" is great (forget which one); sort of dub Irish.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Monday, 4 July 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

"The Only Ones - Even Serpents Shine - Is this the one with Another Girl, another planet either way bound to be good"

no it's not on there. But what with Miles to Nowhere and all, Even Serpents Shine is just the sort of thing I vainly hope to find in my father's collection. I'm pretty jelous, really!

french diplomacy (french diplomacy), Monday, 4 July 2005 05:59 (twenty years ago)

I think the Jam records are good.

Peter Stringbender (PJ Miller), Monday, 4 July 2005 08:04 (twenty years ago)

That Tomita record is one of my all-time favourites.

On the other hand the Barclay James Harvest record I posted back to Britannia Music Club in 1980 on grounds of emotional cruelty!

Everyone on this thread OTM about the initial list you posted.

-- jaymc (jmcunnin...), July 4th, 2005.

Ah! Yes I did, I've been a pretty cool son recently. I might get him a turntable somehow. I bet he'd love to listen to some of this stuff again.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 4 July 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

We had this in Oxfam about a month ago. If memory serves, I think it was £15 excellent condition. You'll get £7-10 for it maybe? To be honest it's not even a good compilation - it's been replaced by better comps. Looks nice tho.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Monday, 4 July 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

£15 in Oxfam?????? They're definitely getting above their station, that lot.

so, I guess I'm the only 4" Be 2" fan.. granted, just two singles, but they're both great.. at least, they're both better than any PiL post Flowers Of Romance.. (which isn't really saying too much, but..)

The Neville Brothers - Yellow Moon

I like Lanois' production and this is one of his better examples. Not the most exciting of albums but still good for what it is.

The Band - The Last Waltz

Not my personal pick of the bunch, I think they just re-released the movie on DVD.

The Only Ones - Even Serpents Shine

Thats one of the few Only Ones albums without Another Girl On A Another Planet isn't it? If your dad has it, get their self titled one instead.

David Bowie - Scary Monsters

"Ashes To Ashes" is grebt, wouldn't "buy" the album for it though.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Monday, 4 July 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

donut, you didn't read my post.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Monday, 4 July 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

well, you said one of the sides was great.. wasn't sure if that implied you were a fan or not. Then again, if you even own anything by 4" Be 2", given their rather small output, then that makes you a fan by definition.

donut e- (donut), Monday, 4 July 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

my attention span is V. short

the jam's sound affects is perfect for that! a couple of clunkers on it, but overall their best, as i am not the first to say. the gift is the reverse, a horrible album with just a couple of non-clunkers.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 4 July 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

I'm more a fan of the "ALL of the Lads" single, which remixes "One Of The Lads"... it's the one with the big green clover on it, not the one with the guy in the scary mask smoking a cigarette.
