I suddenly understand that this album is indeed godhead. I am speechless, in shock, and I blame Ian Reise-Moraine. :)

It's a doozy and a half.

"Never going BACKWARDS!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 4 July 2005 04:54 (twenty years ago)

Check out Real to Reel Cacophony & Sons & Fascination/Sister Feelings Call....then stop.

mzui (mzui), Monday, 4 July 2005 05:42 (twenty years ago)

Yes but you see, I HAVE! ;) Empires & Dance is the one Simple Minds album I probably have the LEAST direct experience with compared to everything else pre-86. That's why it's such a nice surprise for me. I've been quite enamoured with Sisters/Sons/New Gold Dream/Sparkle In The Rain for years. I had Real To Reel on cassette for years, too and tried to get into it numerous times with no luck. I even had both 12"es that Empires & Dance spawned, but still it never quite jelled for me until now. Wonders never cease, etc.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Monday, 4 July 2005 08:49 (twenty years ago)

I know what you mean, I'd overlooked it til recently too, despite having NGD and Celebration on vinyl for years. Fantastic album.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 4 July 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

Ahh, it's a fucking pleasure to be of service. Especially in regard to that album!

(Which, if anyone doesn't know, this album's fucking classic. They were some forward-thinking motherfuckers at this time and this album BARELY got released by Arista because it was pretty dark. Shame that they made "hamburger music" later and tarnished their reputation, but they left us with some astounding records and as far as I'm concerned Jim Kerr is perfectly justified in deserving the millions he's doubtlessly raked since New Gold Dream only because SM left us with Life in a Day, Real to Real Cacophony, this album, Sons and Fascination, and Sister Feelings Call.)

New Simple Minds album on the way in September:

Simple Minds Go 'Black And White' On New CD
http://www.billboard.com/bb/daily/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000972737

"We can honestly say that we are delighted with the results and look forward with a totally revitalized outlook to this next phase of our ongoing creativity," explains Kerr. "We feel with some certainty that people who grew up with Simple Minds will share our enthusiasm for this new work."

We wanted to make an album once again that was full of dramatic and atmospheric pop music," he says. "We felt that we needed an album that proved as much to ourselves as anyone else, that the big beating heart of Simple Minds was very much alive and driving us on once again."

Well, that told me nothing.

Though the music is fine, Jim Kerr still sounds like a buffoon to me. I think he sounds like Jim Morrison a lot actually, which might be why I feel that way.

NickB (NickB), Monday, 4 July 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

Life in a Day is a weird contrast to that. He sounds very glam-punk there.

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Monday, 4 July 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it kindof bugs me that back when I listened to Life In A Day I didn't have any real experience with (early) Roxy Music, and I always remember people saying there were similarities. It's possible I would like that album more now, too.

Thanks for the info DJ Martian! I admit, I'm rather intrigued. But then the last thing I heard from them was the fairly dismal Street Fighting Years, which was what...'89? So I have no idea what to expect from them now. Have they actually had any U.K. chart success since then or what?

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Monday, 4 July 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

They have, yes. Their albums continually make the charts upon release over there.

Erm, that just sounds like they're going to make Dont you Forget About me PTII - for the love of god dont! Please buy our albums! We used to be cool!

From that link above...

# "We have one new tune that is very much in the style of something from our earlier album Empires and Dance. The working title of this dark and dramatic piece is God Save Us From Our Governments - it aptly sums up how we feel regarding Tony Blair's stance towards the notion of disarmament in Iraq. Despite the heavy-handed song title, this is not sloganeering for the sake of it. Throughout our career we have within our music tried to encapsulate the feeling and issues of the times that we live in." - Jim

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

re: dramatic and atmospheric pop music - this is referring to the 1980 - 1982 sound

This album is NOT going to be obvious stadium electronic-rock circa 1985

the first track on he album:

Stay Visible track
http://www.simpleminds.org/sm/songs/baw/sv1.htm

"A song that could have come out of any of the sessions for Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call, and yet here and now it cries out to be the opening track of this new album." - Jim

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

Apparently the Empires and Dance-esque one looks unlikely to appear on it.

Return to Form...

This Official Press Release: provides an overview of the album:

http://www.noblepr.co.uk/Press_Releases/sanctuary_records/simple_minds.htm

i was wrong...they are citing the mid 80s sound as well in the press release. Plus reference to one track that is similar to New Gold Dream album.

UK release date - Monday September 12, 2005
US release date - Tuesday September 13, 2005

LINE UP:
vocals: Jim Kerr
guitar: Charlie Burchill
drums: Mel Gaynor

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

But the mid-80's sound was hamburger music!

Ian Riese-Moraine has been xeroxed into a conduit! (Eastern Mantra), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

Press release however claims this:

Now after a three year hiatus Simple Minds are back with their best CD since 'New Gold Dream,' called 'Black and White 050505.'

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
I heard one of the new tracks on the radio this weekend on some show for old geezers. I missed the name of the song, but... didn't know who it was while it was playing but it sounded (to me) sort of like a better, more angsty version one of them there nu-fangled Bravery type bands ripping off Billy Idol's 'White Wedding'. All propulsive bass and Jimbo mumbling something over the top. And hey, it was okay!

NickB (NickB), Monday, 15 August 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

Or maybe it sounded more like 'Rebel Yell' - it's so hard to hear properly now with all this damn hair growing in my ears.

NickB (NickB), Monday, 15 August 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

fourteen years pass...

Surprised how out of print this cd is.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 5 January 2020 16:42 (six years ago)

It's $12 on Amazon. I have the expanded CD as found in the X5 box, which finally opened my eyes to just how brilliant all their early work was.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Sunday, 5 January 2020 20:30 (six years ago)

There is a few left but I thought the remaster would stay in print. I might spring for the set. Dunno yet.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 5 January 2020 20:55 (six years ago)

Surprised in 2020 that any CDs get repressed at all, really.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Sunday, 5 January 2020 20:57 (six years ago)

Oh, it isn't included in the set.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 5 January 2020 20:58 (six years ago)

Does the early stuff sell? Did it used to be well stocked?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 5 January 2020 20:59 (six years ago)

As well-stocked as any remastered reissue CD from the early 2000s. When CD reissues I want come out now, I buy them immediately so I don't have to pay $40 for them on Discogs a year later.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Sunday, 5 January 2020 21:03 (six years ago)

Oh, it isn't included in the set.
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 5 January 2020 20:58

this is the X5 set in which Empires is included :

https://www.amazon.co.uk/X5-Simple-Minds/dp/B006GX3ONK/ref=sr_1_37?keywords=simple+minds&qid=1578311499&s=music&sr=1-37

but its out of print of course.

mark e, Monday, 6 January 2020 11:55 (six years ago)

Thankyou very much. I bought it for £60.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 10 January 2020 18:03 (six years ago)

enjoy !
its a great boxset - lots of extra 12" versions etc.

mark e, Friday, 10 January 2020 18:28 (six years ago)

one year passes...

O this album is really quite good. Dunno if I'd go quite as far as the honourable member for Nuvvieworld yet but I'm very much in favour

imago, Tuesday, 9 November 2021 21:59 (four years ago)

It is an excellent record, Capital City is especially fine. Charlie Burchill must be the most brilliantly diffuse, egoless lead guitarist of all time, even when they were stadium-sized he refused to completely commit to the idea of it.

Maresn3st, Tuesday, 9 November 2021 22:12 (four years ago)

Yeah Capital City was a serious banger. I really do love how they insist on being to some extent circuitous on these early records

imago, Tuesday, 9 November 2021 22:13 (four years ago)

Providing you can make your peace with Kerr's 'European guy' voice, the first few records are gold.

Maresn3st, Tuesday, 9 November 2021 22:16 (four years ago)

Oh I know! SFC especially. Was wondering what the catch was with this album, turns out it's side B after Capital City lol

imago, Tuesday, 9 November 2021 22:18 (four years ago)

Side B is def. weaker but it does have "Thirty Frames A Second" which is a fantastic Gang of Four rip.

Tim F, Tuesday, 9 November 2021 23:17 (four years ago)

There are some good songs on this but it's essentially a set-up for what they do on Sons & Fascination/Sister Feelings Call.
I'll stand up for "Constantinople Line" as a highlight on side 2, as well.

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 9 November 2021 23:29 (four years ago)

i only knew "don't you" really until i started playing this silly facebook game called songpop in which you guess songs as fast as you can. turns out that game introduced me to a ton of cool songs & artists. including songs from this album.

‘A nuclear reactor of music’: the story of Simple Minds’ classic album Empires and Dance

“I Travel” still sounds at least 15 years ahead of its time. The band was truly a miracle between 1980 and 1984
