Why does Carlos Santana have a line of women's shoes?

So I'm walking through a department store and notice a display of women's shoes layed out on a bunch of conga drums. On second glance I notice they all say Santana. Santana by Carlos Santana. Women's spiky high heel shoes being sold under Santana's name. Why? WTF?

He's a stylin' man.

Sounds like I might like his shoes more than his music.

The shoes actually fit his music remarkably well.

War should sponsor a line of low rise women's jeans.

I don't know if I should be embarrassed to admit that I own a pair of Carlos shoes. They're pretty- pale blue, two straps, 2" heel, with little leather flowers on the straps.

Did the Santana branding have anything to do with you buying the shoes? I just can't figure out how his name is meant to appeal to female shoe shoppers. I mean, Jerry Garcia ties make sense for male baby boomers but Carlos Santana heels baffle me.

Someone photoshop a Nike logo on them!

I bought mine because the heel is lowish & the flowers on them are cute, and they're not very expensive. I'm not a Santana fan- it always struck me as pretty random that they're selling shoes in Nordstrom with his name on them. Does the average lady shopping at Nordstrom really even know who he is?

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

At least they're not called "Sole Sacrifice."

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 03:38 (twenty years ago)

That's pretty much what I thought Lyra. You're going to buy the shoes because you like them, not because they have the Santana seal of approval. How did he get into this? Did a shoe maker approach him with the idea or has Santana always secretly harbored the desire to design women's shoes?

Actually a shiny silver handbag with the classic Santana lion's head image would be pretty cool!

Oh, I finally found an explanation, on the Raider's site of all places.

"The line is a collaborative effort between the legendary guitarist and Brown Shoe Company, best known for its Naturalizer and Buster Brown brands."

"We are thrilled to be wearing boots carrying the 'Carlos, by Carlos Santana' name," said Raiderette Director Karen Kovac. "The boot styling is fashion forward and comfortable for dancing, but more importantly they represent a connection to a legendary artist with a foundation dedicated to helping children."
