Oh man, I'm going to see Bob on the 9th! Looks like I miss the Little Axe portion by a day! I love Little Axe. I don't know who is opening the show I'm going to. Probably somebody lame.

Detroit band.

a pretty good one at that, but they've never come close to getting their live sound on record. they've toured with the dirtbombs at least a couple times.

Bob was great!!

His voice is a lot better these days. I've always wondered what the hell happened to the dude in between Fate of nations and Dreamland. I think he blew out his voice with the Page and Plant stuff. Because if you listen to some of the tracks that had dribbed and drabbed out before Dreamland -- the Spence cover, the Amos collaboration, other one-offs -- his voice frankly sounded like ass. I think he needed to give it a rest. In any case, it sounds great now. He's got a real nice band this time out, too. I highly recommend the show.

The only disappointment for this long-time Plant fan is that he didn't play a single solo track from before Dreamland. No "In the Mood", no "Big Log" .. no "Thru With the Two-Step"!! etc. very disappointing. Healthy dollop of Zep tunes, tho, all mostly rearranged for the new band in a very advantageous manner. A spooky, sparse "No Quarter" kicked things off with multiple frame-drums providing the accompaniment. There was also a great one-two punch of "That's the Way" and "Hey, Hey What Can I Do" that was awesome. Also "Gallows Pole" from III showed up. I thought of Jonathan Williams. A reworked (to be less-heavy, but still gripping) "Black Dog" showed up, as did "When the Levee Breaks". He prefaced the latter, by relating how thrilled he was to go up and catch part of the Old Town School of Folk Music festival, and how he got to see some of Otis Clay's set, and how thrilled he was to see him. Wow! My hero. Bob has always had such great taste. Anyway, now I'm gonna go to the Velvet Lounge fundraiser. Heck, Plant might even show up there, that crazy music fan. What a cool guy.

Dylan and Willie tomorrow. Can't wait. It's an all-Bob weekend here in Chicago.
