Who does this horrible cover of the Smiths' Bigmouth Strikes Again?

I was listening to Chilean radio, feeling out of place, when I heard 'Sweetness, I was only joking when I said' and I got all excited. The Smiths, when so far it has been only the Police and Placeo! But no. It was a horrible, whiney cover by some guy. Who is the culprit?

Placebo!

Telephonething (Telephonething), Monday, 4 July 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

And yes, it really is horrible, isn't it? See also their desecration of "20th Century Boy." Brian Molko has the most punchable voice in rock.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Monday, 4 July 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

also, Read Yellow did a version recently, but if it was horrible and whiney, you probably heard Placebo.

There's another one? Cripes. It's entirely possible you heard this second one- I can't imagine mistaking Moz for Molko, even for a second.

I just realized Molko's singing voice can be perfectly summed up with the word "bleat."

How do we know it wasn't the Love Spit Love cover?

Aaron A., Monday, 4 July 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

treepeople did one.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 4 July 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

there was an emo smiths covers album that came out last year that was one of the most horrible things i've ever heard in my life.

Brilliant cover version: The Ukranians!

(on their 1992 Pizni Iz The Smiths EP, which I always lose between my other cds because it's in a stupid folded cardboard cover)

StanM (StanM), Monday, 4 July 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Agreed on the Ukranians cover. Good stuff.

I like me the Placebo cover. Partially because I like Placebo and that always pisses a lot of people off. ;-)

the first song on every placebo album is really good.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 4 July 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

I hate Placebo with the burning fire of a thousand supernovas and even I can admit that the "Pure Morning" riff (not the lyrics, mind you, just the riff) is great.

True or False: A friend with weed...

Yeah, I just downloaded that Treepeople cover - Treepeople also appeared on this Boston double-7" tribute that I got many, many moons ago. I think they performed "Hitchin' A Ride."

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Monday, 4 July 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

Kate Rogers does a "sweet" version on her latest album.

Placebo do a number of other horrid covers as well, including "20th Century Boy", "Where Is My Mind?", and "Running Up That Hill".

They do a good version of "Johnny and Mary", though.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 4 July 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

'Johnny and Mary' is an astute choice for Placebo to cover.

Uuuuuugh all my gothly girlyfriends LOVE Placebo's cover of "running up that hill" more than the original even, and I want to strangele them for it.

almost agree - their first single off each album is great.
They do a good version of "Johnny and Mary", though.
