Chicago Underground - C or D?

Duos, Trios, Quartets...where to begin? Should I begin at all? I don't like Tortoise or Isotope 217 but love free jazz especially duos. Are the Chicago Underground folks wanky / fusion esque? I almost picked up a cd used the other day but somebody on it was credited with 'found sounds' - yuck. I'm a bit of a purist. Help me out.

I don't really like the Chicago Underground Duo records -- they're not really that strong. But if you really like free-jazz duos, maybe you'll like them, I don't know. It's no Max Roach-Cecil Taylor. I do like the trio and quartet records, but some of them sort of mix in electronic music. I think they do it in a pretty tasteful way, and they're honestly fairly straight ahead. I also recently got the solo Jeff Parker record The Relatives, which is quite tasteful and quite good.

Chad Taylor is one of the best (if not the best) drummer I've ever seen. You'll get yr bleeps and bloops in whatever you get by them, so if that puts you off, steer clear. The Duo stuff is pretty far from being Tortoise-y or Isotope-y though. I think "Axis and Alignment," is amazing personally. Can I use the term, "chops?"

Chad Taylor is one of my favorite drummers, but I'm not too keen on Rob Mazurek, at least not in the straight jazz setting. I think "chops" would be a good term here, used in tandem with "lack."

Try the Sticks and Stones record on Touch and Go. The purist in you may like it.

Purist avant garde fans confuse me.
