Best live electric Miles?

Homely Jim, Tuesday, 5 July 2005 06:59 (twenty years ago)

dark magus!!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 07:03 (twenty years ago)

Of those three: Live-Evil. Though my favourite is Black Beauty.

Omar (Omar), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 07:13 (twenty years ago)

what sinker said. extra added sharrock does make a difference!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 07:20 (twenty years ago)

He's not on "Dark Magus" tho, isn't it Pete Cosey?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 10:14 (twenty years ago)

They're both on it, but Sharrock is uncredited the same as he was on Jack Johnson, I think for contractual reasons as he was still signed to Atlantic as part of Herbie Mann's band at the time (on Get Up With It he appears as "Dominique Gaumont").

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

Oh right, didn't know that! "Dominique Gaumont" is on "Dark Magus" too.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

Was Dave Liebman contractually obligated not to mention Sharrock in the Dark Magus reissue liner notes as well?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

well he probably couldn't recall if he was there or not. you have to understand that many substances lent themselves to these recordings...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

Dominique Gaumont was actually a 19 or 20 year-old French Hendrix-esque guitar player that Miles found who A) did end up getting hooked on heroin and B) wasn't Sonny Sharrock.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

That's only what THE MAN wants you to believe!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

Now I'm confused

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

The Man==Paul Tingen, author of Miles Beyond?
The Man==Jack Chambers, author of Milestones
The Man==Dave Liebman, verbose sax player in Miles's contemporaneous band?
The Man==Marcello Carlin's evil twin Marlon?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

FUCKIN SHARROCK WAS ON FUCKIN DARK MAGUS NOW SHUT IT CUNT

I hope that settles this interesting exchange of views.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

So says Marlon...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

Agharta is better than Pangaea. Black Beauty & Dark Magus are not as good imo.

best live electric Miles = At Fillmore. no guitars though.

autovac (autovac), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

Sharrock's playing isn't anything like Gaumont's. Evidence - "He Loved Him Madly," on which Gaumont plays the lead guitar (Pete Cosey's not on the track).

pdf (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

wha? where did you hear this story, marcello?

Beta (abeta), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

He's playing uncredited on "Jack Johnson" and is he on "On the Corner" too?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

The only guitarists on On The Corner are David Creamer (who promptly disappeared after the session, finally turning up again on the second and third releases by Henry Kaiser and Wadada Leo Smith's Yo Miles! project), and John McLaughlin. Reggie Lucas joined the band right after that (he's the only guitarist on In Concert: Live At Philharmonic Hall) and Pete Cosey first played with Miles in 1973.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

The live part of "Live Evil" is mesmerizing, the studio stuff isn't nearly as good. I think it is on Funky Tonk, when it breaks down to a real slow blues and John McLaughlin just takes over. It is some of my favorite lead guitar on any record.

The Live Evil band was a way different than the group that recorded in Japan in 75. Those later recordings have much more of an ensemble group sound, as the soloists are much less up front and Miles is either playing organ or when he plays trumpet it is really, really effected.

I like all of Miles electric fusion albums, but I prefer parts of Live Evil out of these three, although as an album it may not be as good all the way through as Agharta.

That latter "Live at the Fillmore East: It's About Time" with most of the Bitches Brew band is great. Jack DeJohnette plays some unbelievable funky drums on that one.

earl -

If you haven't already heard it, the Cellar Door Sessions box is gonna take your head off. Six CDs of the Live-Evil band. The material on Disc 6 was edited down for that album, the rest is previously unreleased, McLaughlin only plays on two of the six, and once you've heard the whole thing you realize that the band is better without him. But it's all mind-roasting stuff.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

Are you Freeman? I think you posted on the other couple threads about Miles electric period before. Is it out on the shelves. I knew that review copies were going out to people.

I am sure I will eventually pick it up.

The Miles Davis electric show I wish I had on video is when he came to Indianapolis in 1974 or 75 to play a fundraiser benefit for Senator Birch Bayh. I would imagine those blue hairs thought they were getting "My Funny Valentine" and all of the sudden a UFO lands in the middle of their blue plate luncheon. I've heard about this show, but would have loved to see this one.

earlnash, Tuesday, 5 July 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

It's not on shelves yet - U.S. street date is 9/20.

I can't believe no one is willing to stand up for the deeply creepy sides 3-4 of Pangaea. That stuff is the real deal.

I'll stand up for 'em, even though I think overall Live-Evil and Agartha are both superior to Pangaea by a few nose hairs.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

Always thought "Pangaea" was strangely underrated

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 7 July 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I always thought Pangaea was better than Agartha.

Omar (Omar), Thursday, 7 July 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

Agreed.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 7 July 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Since Pangaea and Agartha were both recorded by the same band on the same day, I think it's hard to argue one over the other. It all seems like one long, dark mood with varying levels of intensity.

I love all three albums to death. With all the glut of music available today, and with anyone being capable of releasing an album, is anyone releasing music that is exciting and fascinating like these three albums?

Pangartha, Friday, 8 July 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

Is that a rhetorical question?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 8 July 2005 02:57 (twenty years ago)

Been listening to "Dark Magus", love almost everything about this album, tho bass is a bit plodding at times, loving Miles' "what does this key do?" organ playing!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 8 July 2005 08:43 (twenty years ago)

sixteen years pass...

I just discovered that there is a solo lp by Dominique Gaumont that was released in the early 80s. The one track I've heard so far sounds a lot like the music on Dark Magus . Seems to have a number of people with his surname on so assume they're related to him. Also has Al Foster on it apparently.
Had it turn up as a recommendation on Spotify.

I was just looking on here to see if anybody had mentioned it. & now find that some people doubted his actual existence.
He's more than a Sonny Sharrock pseudonym but he appears to have died in like 1984.

Stevolende, Friday, 18 February 2022 15:16 (three years ago)

if you like dark magus, you'll like that gaumont LP. it rips.

tylerw, Friday, 18 February 2022 16:46 (three years ago)

yeah, thanks Steveo, sounds great (and, nb, much cheaper direct from the label than on Bandcamp).

bulb after bulb, Friday, 18 February 2022 16:47 (three years ago)

this Gaumont solo album is amazing

Brad C., Saturday, 19 February 2022 21:34 (three years ago)

Yeah, big thanks Stevo, this is great!

Also it lead me to this.

Maybe wrong thread, but does anybody have a Human Arts Ensemble first album recommendation?

Posted earlier before listening to the whole Dominique Gaumont album and just have to restate: yes, this is totally great. Loving the Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Hazel vibes. Also looking at the credits some of the band members share his surname, so it seems like some of the performances were a family affair. Definitely has that feel about it. Great stuff.

Sometimes my enthusiasm precedes my memory.

This is wonderful music.

Their first album, Under the Sun, is pretty good and I think it's on streaming services. If not, there's an expensive-ish ($25 or so) Japanese CD you can find without too much difficulty.

but also fuck you (unperson), Saturday, 19 February 2022 23:00 (three years ago)

I have Under the Sun and Whisper of Dharma as well, they're both pretty expressionistic and abstract, each with 2 side-long pieces.
