The Byrds, The Monkees etc. Why so? Was it just copying The Beatles? Or did it predate them?

When Micky Dolenz was doing his morning show in NYC a couple months ago, he claimed that the reason "Monkees" was spelled as such was so that it could be trademarked. A bit disingenuous, but then, so was a lot of his morning schtick.
