Monstrous thumping basslines

Woke up today needing MONSTROUS THUMPING BASS and basically nothing else. You know how it is. Already got Metal Box played to death and it's not even 1:30 yet. Checked the "Top 100 Basslines" thread but I do not want no rock and roll bullshit (broadly speaking) with my m. t. basslines today, or as little of it as possible anyhow. I know nothing of dub reggae but from what I've read I think it might do the trick. Or what about Jah Wobble/Invaders of the Heart? HELP. THANKS.

You can just slsk for "Miami Bass", and get plenty. Most probably catalogged by year. Post 1987 has multi-tonal basslines. Pre-1987 has monotones.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

OK, I just grabbed King Tubby's "Dub Fi Gwan" and it's pretty cool but I need OMINOUS and APOCALYPTIC. The Black Strobe remix of "Keine Lust" is kind of working for me at the moment. Other tracks suggested above are en route to my computer from out of the ether even as I type.

How about Curtis Mayfield, "If There's a Hell Below, We're All Gonna Go"? Massive bassline, and that song's about as apocalyptic as rock & soul ever got.

"The Joint" - The Joint. Trust me.

Messiaen Dread's "King George Warmonger" -- YES TO THAT. Not overtly sonically Scary but certainly the most m. & t. of the few I've snapped up so far. NB: searching for "The Joint" is not going real well.

What I really want, I fear, is about six more albums' worth of stuff as similar as possible to the best of PiL's Metal Box basswise, i.e. "Albatross," "Swan Lake," and "Careering."

A weakish but mentionable near-miss from my existing, ha, collection: My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult's "A Daisy Chain 4 Satan." It is so datedly fucking cheesy, though.

Got some of that Midimiliz queued up, plus the Mayfield.

Hahaha, right after starting "So Mars" in Winamp I began mentally composing a semi-mock-infuriated post a la "Is this some traditional joke on wannabe-ex-indie fuxx, or what part(s) of MONSTROUS and THUMPING do you NOT GET, WAAH" etc. Then at 1:50 into it: ah.

Somebody dissuade or encourage me re post-PIL Wobble. If the latter, include specifics -- a glance at AMG makes it seem unpromising and quickens the realization that I must look elsewhere, genre-wise, for Metal Box / Second Edition-style sounds.

SECONDED! Fucking monster, that one! Huge influence on dub, too.

I also recommend 23 Skidoo's "The Gospel Comes to New Guinea" (ten minutes long, not a dull moment, very tense/ominous/apocalyptic) and the debatably even creepier "Porno Base" (or is it "Porno Bass"?). You won't be disappointed. Bigger bass sound the Metal Box, surely.

And must second Radioactive man 'Uranium'.. His fabric mix cd is good if you're looking for bass heavy electro.

The bassline on Omni Trio's "Renegade Snares" is certainly m and t. The Foul Play VIP Remix version particularly so, if memory serves...

Bill A (Bill A), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

basically any speed garage circa 1997. (maybe especially the van helden remix of "spin spin sugar".)

I never liked that van Helden mix.

the Gap Band's "You Dropped a Bomb on Me"!
Don't forget "Burn Rubber (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)" either!
