Fifteen's old enough to read just about anything, isn't it?

Just steer him far, far away from the NME. He's ripe for picking up & brainwashing at that age.

Decibel!

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Probably Kerrang. Every teenager has to go through a Kerrang phase. Unlike the NME it doesn't patronise its readership and has some damn good writers: Stevie, Kulkarni, Ben Myers...As long as he pays attention to those guys and steers clear of Funeral For A Friend he'll be ok.
It's a damn shame Select is no more - and there's never been anything like it since.
Of course, when I was 15 I read Mojo as well, but it sure lacked Select's irreverence and colour.

Stew (stew s), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

why not plan b...

b b, Tuesday, 5 July 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

I second Kerrang. You don't want him turning into a corny folk/indie fux.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking Mojo. Haven't looked at Kerrang in a while.

In case this helps, here are some bands he's been heavily digging lately:

Beatles
Nirvana
Pixies
Radiohead

And thanks a lot.

Nigel, I'd eschew print mags and recommend he scope out what's online. Blogs, "real" sites, whatever.

Jon, praytell, what was popping yr cherry at 15?

Plan B is a fine mag, but it assumes a certain amount of knowledge from its readers. That said, when I started reading the NME ten years ago I was hit with all kinds of references I didn't get which only encouraged me to find out more, so there's no harm in him giving it a shot.

Stew (stew s), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Blender.

Slayer magazine, obviously. Maybe you'll eventually get him to get a nice 80s Sodom haircut too (and matching scythe!)

Øystein (Øystein), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

If i were an editor of a weekly music magazine, this week's front cover would be a SuperSonic festival preview

Jeebus! NME have taken over-design to hideous new levels! It's just so cluttered - yeuch!

Select was quite bright and dynamic design wise - certainly not minimalist a la Wire - but they still knew to stick to one strong main picture. And they had moments of POP genius like the issue that came in a cereal box. I wish I still had mine, would be worth a mint. Apparently they don't even have one in Mappin House.

Was anyone a fan of Neon? It was basically Select for films, same editorial team and everything. Covered blockbusters and cult stuff with intelligence, wit and irreverence. Hotdog aspires to be like it, but is far, far away.

Nothing wrong with your brother reading Mojo though. He'll probably get more out of it now than I did from the Mojo years ago. It's got some younger writers in now and has moved beyond the mid 70s and the classic rock canon to some extent. Picked up a '97 Mojo in Oxfam the other day for 25p. Big Neil Young interview by Sylvie Simmons - excellent. Feature on Kula Shaker - not so good.

stew (stew s), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

Now I think of it though, perhaps the fact that I no longer find Mojo a little middle aged in looks and attitude simply reflects the fact I'm getting older! :( That said the design is fresher and less Rolling Stone these days.

I'm pretty sure there were two issues that came in ceral boxes and I'm pretty sure I've still got both of 'em.... Are they really likely to be worth much?!?

I hope you have scoffed the free food samples !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 11:01 (twenty years ago)

All consumables have been consumed long since.

I hate to ask, but was this the equivalent in investment terms of using an undiscovered Rembrandt to line the cat's litter tray?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

maybe this American music mag is suited for 15 year olds?
