I say no, because there are better new wave comps, But this one is pretty cheap and if you don't have those songs already then get it.

those are all great songs but cheap? goodness no. you could probably find all the original 45s for less if you were patient enough.

I agree $30 isn't cheap but comps like that are usually more. I like buying those $5 Garage Rock Comps myself.

Yeah it's not too terribly cheap, but I don't have a lot of those songs.

Michael, what other comps would you suggest?

van nostrum (Buck Van Smack), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

This one I bought for $6. It's my favorite cheap comp I ever bought

But just go to the record store at the end of the Rock/Pop isle and you'll probably find some cheap New Wave/'80s comps there.

Re the original comp: So "Sheena is a punk rocker" is post-punk now? Blimey, purists!

i think we could start a ysi thread and come up with all the tracks from that new wave comp ourselves. i've got several of them!

This is a different tracklisting from the UK edition, which even more inexplicably includes "Drop The Pilot" by punk goddess Joan Armatrading.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 08:04 (twenty years ago)

would that be a compiler saying "never mind all that, here's something you'll all like!"

"would that be a compiler saying "never mind all that, here's something you'll all like!""

Or maybe saying "Bollocks, what songs do we have a licence for in the UK then? Just pick one of them at random then, who cares?".

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

Personally I would all wait until they come out on those free New Wave CDs with Saturday's Daily Mail.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

...which even more inexplicably includes "Drop The Pilot" by punk goddess Joan Armatrading.

Actually, the resident DJ at our local "alternative" club used to "drop" this one all the time. I could never understand why.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 08:21 (twenty years ago)

I remember Peter Powell creaming himself over this record regularly. "Classic track!" etc.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm surprised that they didn't include "I Am The Music Man" by Rusty Goffe while they were at it. The latter's saxophone playing is easily on a par with that of Jonathan Richman.

Is this post-punk compilation worth buying?

The post punk comp you need is:

Sound of the Suburbs

It covers new wave, novelty punk and pub rock (essential punk co-habitant imo).

that reminds me - there's a new members compilation cd just come out covering the chiswick/stiff stuff as well as the virgin stuff. not bad until about mid-'79, then you have to open a window.
