I answered Amon Duul'd Paradieswarts Duul for Orbit's finest Krautrock Album thread, but as I answered I realized that my favorite song, my apotheosis if you will, simply must be Can's "Mother Sky".

Let us debate.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 04:02 (twenty years ago)

"Krautrock" of course

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 04:03 (twenty years ago)

"hallogallo"

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 04:11 (twenty years ago)

ruckzuck

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

Krautrock seconded but I might have to think a bit harder.

jmeister (jmeister), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

"archangel's thunderbird"

el sabor de consistency (yournullfame), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)

AT rulez!

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 04:28 (twenty years ago)

Can - "Spoon"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 04:41 (twenty years ago)

"Turtles Have Short Legs"

donut e- (donut), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 05:17 (twenty years ago)

I have to second "Archangels Thunderbird." Or, considering Peter, third it. Oh what a riff.

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 05:36 (twenty years ago)

"Archangels" rock the balls.. but for a Yeti song, I have to give it up for "Eye-Shaking King"

donut e- (donut), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 05:38 (twenty years ago)

I think it's the freaky ring modulator on the vocals, and the proto-Sun City Girls guitar work.

donut e- (donut), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 05:38 (twenty years ago)

"Ananas Symphonie" is my absolute favourite song of the krautrock era, but if I were picking something more representative, I'd choose "Für Immer".

Deluxe (Damian), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 06:58 (twenty years ago)

Faust - "Jennifer". It's all about the Bass.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 07:10 (twenty years ago)

Can't pick one. Narrow it down to:

1/"Du Sohn Davids"
2/"Archangel's Thunderbird"
3/"Spoon"

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 07:20 (twenty years ago)

Who did archangel's thunderbird?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 07:20 (twenty years ago)

Amon Duul 2. It's on "Yeti". (Yeti is GREAT!!)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 07:21 (twenty years ago)

Thanks - will buy.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 07:22 (twenty years ago)

"Owwww it's a sunshine girl, rainyyy babyyyy...."

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 07:30 (twenty years ago)

thud thud thud thud thud thud thud thud thud thud thud thud thud thud thud THUD

Deluxe (Damian), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 07:32 (twenty years ago)

some days it might be "eye shaking king," actually. that's a monster.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 07:43 (twenty years ago)

Mushroom Head. Just for the screams. And that astonishing shuffling beat.

MIS Information (kate), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 07:45 (twenty years ago)

I picked up a V/A album called Kraut Rock on Universal :

Various Artists - Krautrock

1. Novalis - Sonnengeflecht (from 'Novalis')
2. Hamonia - Dino (from 'Musik von Harmonia')
3. Os Mundi - Isn't It Beautiful (from '43 Minuten')
4. Sperrmüll - No Freak Out (from 'Sperrmüll')
5. Scorpions - Inheritance (from 'Lonesome Crow')
6. Epitaph - Visions (Single Version)
7. Embryo - Orient Express/Radio Marrakesch (from 'Rocksession')
8. Electric Sandwich - China (Single Version)
9. Faust - So Far (from 'So Far')
10. Cluster - Heiße Lippen (from 'Zuckerzeit')
11. Guru Guru - Der Elektrolurch (from 'Guru Guru')
12. Kin Ping Meh - Everything (from 'Kin Ping Meh')
13. Jane - Scratches On Your Back (from 'Lady')
14. Yatha Sidhra - A Meditation Mass Part1 (Excerpt from 'A Meditation Mass')
15. Eroc - Nebelwelt (from 'Eroc1')

It's all pretty good (incl. The Scorps!) I only knew Cluster and Harmonia before, but are any of the other bands worth exploring further?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 07:53 (twenty years ago)

gotta third (or fourth) "spoon"... or anything else off "ege bamyasi"

phil turnbull (philT), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 08:00 (twenty years ago)

"Kin Ping Meh"

Sorry, I'm giggling...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 08:06 (twenty years ago)

Jesus Christ this is hard - this morning I'll say "Halleluwah"

Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 08:16 (twenty years ago)

"Mother sky" or "negativland" or "jennifer" or "one more night" or "hero" or "krautrock".

Ellis, Wednesday, 6 July 2005 08:34 (twenty years ago)

Oh Yeah, this is hard. so much to choose from it makes me Dizzy Dizzy, we could go on Für Immer.

willem (willem), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

Pick any, and you'll still "doo right" hem hem...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 08:41 (twenty years ago)

Oh Yeah!

Black Arkestra (Black Arkestra), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

The flute-funk-from-the-31st-century banger "Ruckzuck" by Kraftwerk. OR the axe-rock-that-turn-into-breezy-Rhine-Valley-tropicalia experience "Moonshake" by Can.

Kaiser of Köln (Kaiser of Köln), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)

"mother sky", just totally relentless.

I love it when ILM gets all krautrocked-out!

there are twelve people in the world the rest are haitch (haitch), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

yoo doo right.

id almost buy a car so I could drive round the scottish highlands zoning out to this.

danny boy, Wednesday, 6 July 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

Hm...AT is a super choice, but I too will go with "Mother Sky." Or maybe "Paramechanical World."

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

"Autobahn"... argument over.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

"Future Days" gets my vote. Today.

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

Fur Immer

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

99 Luftballons

RS LaRue (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

"Watussi" by Harmonia or maybe "Letzte Tage Letzte Nachte" by Popol Vuh (w/ vocals by the gal from Amon Duul!). But all the above are equally worthy.

Joel (aquabahn), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

Bel Air

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

Vitamin C

- (smile), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

finalists:

Buffalo Daughter - Cyclic
Can - Future Days
Kraftwerk - Ruckzuck
Neu - Hallogallo or Hero
Faust - It's a Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl

Colin (brakhage), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

neu!, "lila engel"

...for now

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

"Dusseldorf" (really it's "Bel Air" or "Krautrock" or something, but this at least deserves a mention.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Sometime in the indefinite/near future, I will have to buy Soundtracks to hear the uncut "Mother Sky" to see if I agree with Sleeve, which is entirely possible considering how much I like the edited cut. Until then, I'll go with "Halleluwah" for that hypnotic groove. Lotsa runners-up: "Yoo Doo Right", "Phallus Dei", "No Harm" (Faust), "Amboss" (Ash Ra Tempel)...

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

"Der Mussolini" (today)

r1o natsume, Monday, 28 July 2008 16:45 (seventeen years ago)

Rucksturz! Or Mary Mary So Contrary. Or Outside My Door. Or Suche & Liebe. Maybe. Or maybe that song from the Faust Tapes about marshmallows.

gnarly sceptre, Monday, 28 July 2008 16:55 (seventeen years ago)

Give a listen to PV's "Ave Maria" (bonus track on Hosianna Mantra).

Joe, Monday, 28 July 2008 18:02 (seventeen years ago)

Can, Sing Swan Song

... today's choice

Tom D., Tuesday, 29 July 2008 08:52 (seventeen years ago)

I love how Faust recorded a sarcastic pop song, only for it to become one of their best known and loved.

"It's a rainy day, sunshine girl" of course.

Mark G, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 09:24 (seventeen years ago)

Those comments on that clip are right, for once.

Mark G, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 09:31 (seventeen years ago)

Ha ha, that's great, some of those kids in the audience look so scared!

Tom D., Tuesday, 29 July 2008 09:49 (seventeen years ago)

Bel Air or Ruckzuck

Lolpez, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 17:21 (seventeen years ago)

someone should compile a list from this thread and make one poll.

"Neuschnee" or "Leb' Wohl"

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 17:27 (seventeen years ago)

"Leb Wohl" is so beautiful.
Still, I think I would have to pick "Arhangel's Thunderbird."

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 17:37 (seventeen years ago)

Not mentioned yet: Amon Duul II - "Sleepwalker's Timeless Bridge"

o. nate, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 17:50 (seventeen years ago)

"halleluwah" thirded. maybe finest song ever in an opo

kamerad, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 18:00 (seventeen years ago)

first song on Harmonia's Deluxe, whatever it's called
"Deluxe"! :-)

"Sing Swan Song" is amazing. Karoli's guitar sounds so intense on that one.

willem, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 18:09 (seventeen years ago)

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 18:13 (seventeen years ago)

i had no idea that 'archangels thunderbird' love ran so deep!

i might say Can's 'come sta la luna'.. today, at least.

poortheatre, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 18:25 (seventeen years ago)

Not mentioned yet: Amon Duul II - "Sleepwalker's Timeless Bridge"

Dude, "Sleepwalker's Timeless Bridge" is a favorite of mine.
OPO's are always exercises in futility. Thank God we never really have to only pick one.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 18:27 (seventeen years ago)

Give me "Sleepwalker's Timeless Bridge" over "Archangel's Thunderbird" any day of the week!

"Sing Swan Song" is amazing. Karoli's guitar sounds so intense on that one.

That track is almost perfect: keyboards, vocals, drums, little splashes of percussion but, most of all, the bassline!
