Which musician(s) will get to perform at the London Olympics?

OK, so London's somehow managed to win the Olympic bid, but obviously this raises a far more important question.

Forget about the shortage of stadiums and other facilities, forget about the inadequate transport infrastructure, the burning question must surely be: Which musician(s) will get to perform at the London Olympics?

Kylie performed at Sydney in 2000; Bjork inexplicably represented the host nation Greece in Athens in 2004; who's going to represent the UK in 2012?

I need to know because if it's Cliff Richard or Robbie Williams then I only have 7 years in which to emigrate and become a nationalised citizen somewhere else.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

Beverley Knight performed at the Wimbledon players' party the other week. She's that sort of girl.

(xp!)

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Cliff Richard performed impromptu and gratis at Wimbledon when rain stopped play a few years back.... maybe the London Olympic Committee's contingency plan for what to do in the unlikely event of inclement weather at any time during the Games, is to give him free tickets for all the key events?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

is it true that pub rock will actually be an event at the London 2012?

LRJP! (LRJP!), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

No, but the committee are currently considering introducing a number of new events; including "The Lambeth Walk", winkle-picking, and a jellied eel eating contest; in the desperate hope that this will give us some sort of outside hope of maybe winning a couple of medals this time.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Dizzee, with a stadium sized skirt, just like Bjork..

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

The obvious answer is Sir Pete Doherty, who will be given the gig in recognition of his tireless work rehabilitating young drug addicts through a course of exposure to shitty indie-pop. Tough but fair.

It needs something synonimous with style, flair, ambition, the will to win, and, above all, speed.

Yup, Crazy Frog. Acapella.

(god, I'm so slow today yesterday)

Nice that someone's apparently decided to start bombing London so that we can effectively recreate the spirit of the blitz.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 7 July 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

By that point grime will have become the standard form for MOR pop, in the manner of hip hop in the States at the moment. Since grime derives from east London it'll probably be some horrible "back to the streets" thing with Dizzee, Wiley and Crazy Titch (who is from Stratford, right in the centre of the new Olympic village).

Alternatively, I look forward to a duet by rock's then golden couple: Lennon Gallagher and Francis Bean Cobain.
