Lyra Jane (Lyra Jane), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

Oldies radio
Music my parents liked and had on tape
Disco Saturday Nights on 102.9
Might've gotten some modern rock from my older brother (Nirvana, Offspring, STP)

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

1973/74:

Neil Young (well, "Heart of Gold"), Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross & the Supremes, the Doors, Barbara Streisand, The Spinners, Elton John, Chicago, the Rolling Stones, Jim Croce, John Denver, the Sylistics, etc.

Not necessarily knowing what was what in all cases. Mostly top 40, classic rock radio (which might not have been called that then), and my brother's albums.

RS LaRue (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

Tapes I owned: Tiffany's debut, Weird Al's Greatest Hits, Michael Jackson's Bad. My uncle also gave me George Michael's Faith for Christmas, which prompted much tut-tutting among other relatives because of "I Want Your Sex."

Songs I liked on the radio: Suzanne Vega, "Luka"; Madonna, "Who's That Girl"; Steve Winwood, "Back in the High Life."

I didn't really know much about music at all, though. It wasn't until I was 11 that I actually started listening to the radio intently rather than in passing.

It used to realyl frustrate me that I had the acapella version of Tom's Diner. I thought that I had somehow rubbed the music off of the tape.

Nothing but Kiss. I remember my parents bought me the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack for my birthday that year, but I traded it with another kid for Alive II.

81/82

I was HUGE into recording one hit wonders on my lil' tape recorder that I held up to the radio:

Come on Eileen
Go-Gos
Tony Basil
65 Love Affair

Whatever

But this was the same time I was hitting up the local skating rink while they play Boogie and Zapp style funk.

Then Planet Rock/The Message hit, thus, all my stupid 80's rap music posts.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

In 1988 I was big into INXS and Def Leppard mostly. I never stuck on any one or 2 bands though. I watched MTV often. Out of the newest music, I mostly listened to whatever I had available on record, tape or CD, which includes George Michael, George Harrison, Steve Winwood, Michael Jackson, Richard Marx, and like The Bangles and Genesis and UB40 and whatever else was in my house at the time. I was always intrigued by Guns N' Roses, but I didn't own a copy of Appetite until 1993, but I knew and loved all the singles from MTV. I didn't really listen to rap until I was a teenager, besides the rap on MTV.

As for old music, lots of Elton John and Beatles, and various 60's singles.

Also, my brother and I stealthily stayed up past our bedtimes every night to hear the Mighty690AM play 'jam on it' by newcleus. The played it at about 8:30 every single night, it seems.

tylero (tylero), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

Can't say I blame you. I've been listening to it a ton lately!

My mother practicing at home for sunday church. She was the organist. Sometimes a young lady named Tasha would stop by and rehearse vocals. Man, she was dreadful - at least to me and the bros. We'd all just take off and run for cover.

8 would be 1970. i HATED music. my parents were constant listeners to pop radio. i hated the kitchness. the ridiculous popness. the look at me-ness. the jargon. the catch phrases. i felt embarrasessed.

indie before indie, me.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 7 July 2005 07:53 (twenty years ago)

I like Marcello's answers on these threads.

1980: Anne Murray's "Hippo in the Bathtub" children's album.
My uncle took me to see an Anne Murray concert that year at the Canadian National Exhibit in Ottawa. I can remember a profound disappointment while she played song after grown-up song.
I really wanted to hear Teddybear's Picnic. Or Freebird.

BanjoMania (Brilhante), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

1992:
I was big into Guns n' Roses in first grade, particularly "Live n Let Die," so as an 8 year old I still dug them somewhat. I was definitely into some Ya Kid K/Technotronic stuff. "Informer" and "Rump Shaker" were still a year away. Michael Jackson was big in my world as an 8 year old too.

Roadkill Bingo (Roadkill Bingo), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

1977:

Whatever was on Top of the Pops or the radio. Elvis died, so definitely him. "Way Down" I remember.
Dad's music in the car: Roy Orbison, Simon & Garfunkel, Dionne Warwick, early Beatles I think.
"Puff the Magic Dragon" - tho I ran out of the room when it came on as it terrified me
"Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah" - can't remember who that's by. Allen somebody?
"My Brother" - Terry Scott
"The Ugly Duckling" - Mike Reid

Oh, and I'd started getting into Disco, I had some beige slacks I was very fond of cos they swished when I did dancing in the Social Club on holiday. Were the Wurzels getting hits in 77? I loved them too.

oh and I was probably making up dances in front of the mirror to Madonna songs by about then.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 8 July 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

Tammy Wynette and Meatloaf I think.

The New and Improved / Kate (papa november), Friday, 8 July 2005 07:41 (twenty years ago)

Beach Boys and the Beatles. And oldies radio. It took me until I was like 13 to develop any interest in current (as in, more current than 1968) popular music.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Friday, 8 July 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

1986 - Dire Straits

Deluxe (Damian), Friday, 8 July 2005 08:24 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and the year: 1991. And I forgot about (shudder) Hearts of Space. I was addicted to that shit.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Friday, 8 July 2005 08:27 (twenty years ago)

1970.

Knock Knock Who's There/I'm Going To Fall In Love Again - Mary Hopkin. ("Take off your coat and come inside!")

All Kinds Of Everything/Channel Breeze - Dana. ("Dances, romances, tings of the noight...")

Father's 8-track cartridge in the car on the school run: Simon & Garfunkel, Andy Williams, The Sound Of Music, Beethoven's 6th (boring), Mario Lanza's "The Student Prince" (ugh).

Band Of Gold - Freda Payne, on the little record player in the bar at the West Stockwith Yacht Club.

My Sweet Lord - George Harrison, on a cheapo covers album from a supermarket, pouting woman in string bikini on the sleeve.

That pop version of Mozart's 40th symphony.

The cartoon that went with Maxwell's Silver Hammer on Top Of The Pops.

The Kinks, seemingly on Top Of The Pops every week: that ugly man with the squashed face and the bow tie. Not quite getting it.

Peter Glaze and the Crackerjack gang, doing the hits of the day on Friday afternoons.

Still a year or so to go before I started following the charts each week. Not that interested really, but I liked a nice happy catchy tune, and I liked the clothes on the trendy people.
