I'm going to his Boston show tonight. What should I expect?

I went to one a few years ago. He has a fro. He twiddled knobs at a lap top and it sounded basically like the studio versions, except the knobs let him time stretch and shit. Sort of boring.

he'll play less than 10 songs. most will have overly-long, glitched out intro's that serve no purpose then drop into the actual song as it appears on the album. he's hunched over, barely there and extremely disappointing in my opinion. why he feels the need to let his laptop sputter for several minutes before each song is beyond my comprehension. if you haven't bought tickets yet, order one of his EP's or 7"s instead and consider yourself lucky.

On the other hand, he will probably smoke weed with you.

You can see a clip of a Four Tet show at Brainwashed: http://www.brainwashed.com/eye/

He does this strange spazz out dancing that's pretty endearing behind the console setup, even when there's nothing going on but the glitches but it all makes perfect sense when the songs actually kick in. And then he'll walk around the crowd and you can go talk to him and he'll be all shy and nice and stuff. Or at least that's what I remember.

Candicissima (candicissima), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

"Shy and nice" = STONED

Gavin, Wednesday, 6 July 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

Hehe. Probs. He looks like a stoner.

Candicissima (candicissima), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

should I shell out the $13 to go tomorrow nite? I just want a yes or no.

vanessa novaeris (novaeris), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

No.

Gavin, Wednesday, 6 July 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Does the stuff mentioned above appeal to you? If yes, then go. If not, don't. A Four Tet show isn't the most captivating truthfully.

Candicissima (candicissima), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

yeah I was afraid that may be the case. I just got excited since I live in the middle of nowhere & its something I wouldnt hate playing on my street.
*misses civilization*

If you like him and want to see a show, you should go. I had never heard anything he did before catching him on a bill with Beans/Battles/Prefuse 73 and it was a great show. Who else is on the bill?

I'm going to catch him twice more (money willing) in the fall with Jamie Lidell and Hot Chip.

Candicissima (candicissima), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Does he ever do any of his remixes?

Nigel (Nigel), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

Read this: http://popmatters.com/music/interviews/four-tet-050606.shtml

He pretty much admits that his live performance is generally boring. I've seen him do the jazz thing he talks about and that's a damn sight more interesting than his usual performance.

No, never pay to go to the Iron Horse. Fuck them.

It's a room full of people who spend all day looking at a computer screen watching a guy look at a computer screen. With beats. Or it was when I saw him.

snotty moore, Thursday, 7 July 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

I've seen him 14 times. ONE WAS ALREADY TOO MANY.

Um, he's boring. But heckle him in a good-natured way, it's fun! He cracks up and it's adorable.

i had a smashing good time when i went -- very entrancing, much louder than i thought it would be. i recommend.

katie, a princess (katie, a princess), Thursday, 7 July 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Contrary to what everyone else has said I only really got into Four Tet live, despite having a few of his records knocking about at home.

The trick is to see him in the small hours, when you're incredibly sleepy and in an incredibly atmospheric venue (some disused steelworks in Sheffield, in my case). Also drugs, obviously.

His visualisation was an endless loop of some 1970s-looking girls in bikinis running along a beach. It was the very embodiment of a cliche: warm and fuzzy.

I live a stones throw from there. I didnt end up going for obvious reasons - I totally agree with you.

nineteen years pass...

Listening to festival bangers at the office. A little surprised he goes so hard on the dubstep when playing solo, but I guess when you're playing huge American festivals you do what you need to do. NIN and Call Me Maybe vocal edits are fun.
