I'm surprised I haven't seen a thread on this. There's this commercial I've been seeing a lot of for Buzz Ballads. It's basically the same thing as the MONSTER BALLADS but instead of Hair Metal Ballads, it's Alternative Rock Ballads.

Seeing Faith No More's Commodores cover on there amuses me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

OMG I'M BUYING FOUR COPIES

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

You have a lot of enemies, Eppy?

rogermexico (rogermexico), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

I have a lot of ladies to romance, more like.

OK, only one, but I know what she likes!

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

I'm not what you would call old (I'm 18) but when you find out that the music you grew up listening to turnes out to be on cheesey late night compilation commercials or it's either playing on classic rock channels, does it make you sad? It does for me.

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

Less sad than it makes me to be intimately involved with putting out many of those bands' crappy follow-up albums.

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Christ this sounds unlistenable.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm ashamed that about 25 of my secret fave songs are on that list. If I didn't have them in my Zen/computer, I'd have to buy that.

Candicissima (candicissima), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

And you had the noive to diss R. Kelly?!?

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

it's weird for me. I wouldn't buy this comp for anything, because all I have to do is put on KROQ and this will come on, but Alternative Rock was my genre I grew up on (which is a bad genre to grow up on).

Anyways, I would by this comp or I'd rather just put on 95.5 WPLJ and wait.

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

Killer one-disc version:

Glycerine | Bush
Doll Parts | Hole
A Long December | Counting Crows
Linger | Cranberries
Runaway Train | Soul Asylum
Til I Hear It From You | Gin Blossoms
Jumper | Third Eye Blind
Sex & Candy | Marcy Playground
The Freshman | Verve Pipe
Angry Johnny | Poe
Easy | Faith No More
Smells Like Teen Spirit | Tori Amos

Best bonus tracks:
Champagne Supernova | Oasis
Far Behind | Candlebox (I feel like I would like this song more if I hadn't heard it twelve bazillion times)

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

01 Lightning Crashes | Live
02 Champagne Supernova | Oasis
03 If You Could Only See | Tonic
04 Glycerine | Bush

ok if anyone can get through THIS i'm impressed

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

My Father mouths the word to "Far Behind" which is (again) weird. He loves that damn song.

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

Best alternative lyrics to the chorus of "Linger" made up by me whilst pissed (employ caricature Ulster accent for max effect): "Do you fancy a fish finger?/Do you fancy, do you fancy, do you fancy a fish finger?"

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Doing that sort of thing is precisely why I love "I Believe I Can Fly" so much.

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

That makes no sense, Taste.

You must've listened to a lot of Weird Al.

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Listening to this straight through would be one hell of an endurance test. A lot of these songs might be okay if sprinkled throughout a '90s comp or something, but smashed together, it would have to play like the soundtrack to a lost prom/very special episode about suicide episode of "Party of Five."

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm really tempted to buy it now.

I would download them but maybe the songs run into each other, like a Trance Compilation

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

Seeing Faith No More's Commodores cover on there amuses me.

Ha-ha. Doubly so, since I seem to remember the video, which never was aired much, being centered on transvestites. And "Epic" effectively classed them way out of "altie," anyway, if the reverent cover of "War Pigs" hadn't already done so.

George Smith, Wednesday, 6 July 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

I heard Faith No More's "Easy" used in a Levi's commercial last night.

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

Sadly, I never heard Faith No More's cover of "Easy"

I never really thought their stuff was that great, but I like Fantomas and Mr. Bungle (weird).

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Thursday, 7 July 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

you know things are bad when the best song on a compilation is by Hole.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 7 July 2005 03:20 (twenty years ago)

That Poe track stands out uncomfortably from the rest. "Angry Johnny," a ballad? One of those kids is doing her own thing.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 7 July 2005 03:21 (twenty years ago)

ok if anyone can get through THIS i'm impressed

three of those songs are the best ballads of the decade. If you were just like

03 If You Could Only See | Tonic

ok if anyone can get through THIS i'm impressed

that I would hear you on.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 7 July 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

bold choice with the Stabbing Westward and Tori Amos selections.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 7 July 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

"you know things are bad when the best song on a compilation is by Hole. "

Here's the real questions: What's the worse song on it?

My Answer: "Here's to the Night" by Eve 6

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Thursday, 7 July 2005 03:31 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

So let's hypothetically say you're unemployed and drunk on a random Wednesday night at 3 in the morning.. Seems to me this is when commercials for Buzz Ballads 2 are getting played quite a bit, especially since I just saw one on Comedy Central with the sound off. Are people actually drunkenly ordering this CD when they heard the DJ say "order now?" Or to put it another way, are these comps actually selling?

billstevejim, Friday, 27 March 2009 06:22 (sixteen years ago)

well I guess he wouldn't be a DJ.. just an on-air voice talent, but you know what i mean..
