Taking Homework, To Make Records, To Do Homework To

I am writing a paper for English Class. I procrastinated until I heard All The Young Dudes. Now I am working on the paper.

What do ILM'ers listen to when they do/did their homework for school.

I'm sitting here writing a last-minute paper as well!

Am listening to Kruder and Dorfmeister's K&D Sessions. I find that anything more lively a major distraction.

i put on something i don't know the words to (either something shit or something i haven't listened properly to yet) if i have to get work done quickly if not, and i have time to sing/rap along, then at the moment i put on mc lyte and krs one on random. i find also that stoosh is good to work to, because some songs i like to sing along, and others i don't. so i can work and sing along, which is nice.

i found i had to put on a compilation tape that id made of all my favourite old 45s that id listened to over and over in my walkman etc if i wanted to get schoolwork done. it had to be so familiar to me that i couldnt hear it anymore if u know what i mean...like when someone makes u a tape and the sequence of tracks comes to seem so coherent even if its like Billie Holiday followed by Atari Teenage Riot or something (are they so far apart?) and when one track ends yr anticipating the next, and when u hear the same track in its regular context on its own album or followed by its own b-side (or just the crackling silence) it sounds almost wrong, kinda odd. Anyway, i found myself playing this one cassette over and over when i did schoolwork, and it was the only way i could work. anything new or a single track distracted me. the downside is i find it virtually impossible to listen to that same tape without thinkin about schoolwork. in fact i havent played it for ages.

The paper is done.

I listened to Bowie, The Byrds, Kitchens Of Distinction, Roxy Music, and Tears For Fears. The problem with MP3's is that I cannot sit down at the computer without playing music. I certainly miss napster, there has not been another file sharing service quite like it.

I listened to records instead of doing my homework...

Me too, that is why I am in English 101 at 25.

Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92 is the only thing I can listen to when working, and I've tried with quite a few others. ambient wallpaper-ish stuff usually annoys me and anything more intense distracts me..SAW just perfectly straddles that line. I think it also has to do with the upbeat but still laid-back-ness of the tunes that urges me to keep going rather than go to sleep...

Likewise, Bowie and Roxy Music are good HW music for me.

about 4 years ago, i was writing an essay for literature class. i was playing "the yes album" and singing along to "starship trooper", i think. every time i sing along while writing, i inevitably write down some of the lyrics. that's what happened that time. luckily, i proofread.

I used to listen to Moby's album "Ambient" alot. It's my favorite, out of anything he's done -- probably foremost because it's the most consistent. None of the "Everything-is-Wrong"-period-short-shelf- life dance tunes, lacking in the annoying superficiality of "Play" .... the title's a bit misleading, it's more ambient house ... each of the tracks find perfect balance between Eno-style background ambience and attention-worthy melodies ... monochromatic in its sound palette, and rewardingly so. rewardingly slow too. I didn't spend any money on it though, so I may be biased.

i have one record every exam period the ones that i remember: grade 8: ramones/ramones grade 9: built to spill/perfect from now on 10: the breaks by kurtis blow 11: any thing by the ventures ... 1st year: the aisler set 2nd: pet sounds (duh!)

"attention-worthy melodies ... monochromatic in its sound palette"

hehe, that's exactly what I wanted to say about saw85-92 but couldn't find the right words...damn you, dare!

Selected Ambient Works Volume 1 was one of my other main study aids for that same reason, Elliot, so the feeling is mutual.

Nothing special. Just the usual.

Any paper you type up on your computer must be done to Kraftwerk's "Home Computer"

for me, i really can't listen to anything with vocals i know because i usually end up having lyrics running through my mind while im trying to do calc homework. I usually end up listening to atmospeheric stuff like Gas or Fennesz. I tried some boredoms for the sheer fun of it, and i ended up dropping my work and laying on the floor taking the album in instead of studying. cursed japanese.

In high school? Glass & other avant-classical. In college? Elvis Costello & tortoise, then nothing, then rap.

eleven years pass...

listening to music while studying: classic or dud

Ƹ̴Ӂ̴Ʒ (brimstead), Monday, 6 January 2014 03:11 (twelve years ago)

dud, too distracting, unless it's like 76:14 or something like that

queen bey backers (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 6 January 2014 03:20 (twelve years ago)

personally, I love to have instrumental music/'music' playing while studying/working, but i work without music playing 60+% of the time.

xp, yeah that's the kind of stuff i'd work with
