Most obscure pop music reference by family and friends you wouldn't expect

When getting sacked by my little brother (13) in a football game on our Playstation he starts talking trash and goes "ooh yeah, SHOT BY BOTH SIDES!!!". In many ways culturally my little brother is younger than even my little sister (10); he doesn't watch MTV or know much about pop music outside oldies radio. This is a good thing in a sense but his comment totally came out of nowhere.

Any similar experiences?

I think "Shot by both sides" has been a common phrase for a while, and isn't just a Magazine song.

Did he SING the phrase in in a dark brooding voice?

Is it possible that he *knows* this track from a game?

Not really, but we do like to reference things in odd ways by just saying them.

And no games have licensed it that I know of.

my great-grandmother made a fugazi reference once

Just because she told you you'd make a great cop doesn't mean she was referencing Fugazi. She probably really thinks you'd make a great cop!

We were watching "heartbeat" or some such, at my wife's parents house, with them. I only saw the last five minutes, and the basic thing was a baby crying, until the father put on a tape, and "Children of the grave" came on. At which point, Dawn's dad (63) says "Ah! the bairn can't sleep without Back Sabbath playing".

Well, I was like "!" as he's more the Klaus Wunderlicht / Marching bands type.

(It turned out that the cassette had "black sabbath" written on the label, in a scene previous that I'd missed)

Haha, might as well rename this "totally mundane stuff said by family and friends that your hyper-music geek self mistakenly took to be an obscure music reference" (happens to me all the time)
