This EP is seven live tracks from the early to mid-nineties, and an intro. Coyne has apparently encouraged everyone to download it for free, rather than pay for it.

That "Shine On Sweet Jesus" is totally almost a Staples Singers song, isn't it? It's almost SOMEBODY's song.

This is hilarious and so friggin much fun. The drumming is glorious.

When I click on the songs it just opens quicktime and plays, it doesn't actually download it to my computer. Am I doing it wrong???

Right-click, "Save Target As"

cdwill, Friday, 8 July 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

I've got the DVD in my Netflix queue and plan to watch it this weekend. Anyone else seen it yet?

darin (darin), Friday, 8 July 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

I've heard it's great, but parts are disturbing. Can I spoil part of it for you?

cdwill, Friday, 8 July 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Sure. Go for it.

darin (darin), Friday, 8 July 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

The "When You Smile --> Fetus" track really makes me miss Ronald. They were something very special at that point. The Lips owned the second half of the 90s completely.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 8 July 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

I can't wait to see the DVD! These tracks make me feel like I've been huffing ether or something, when listened loudly enough.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 8 July 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

As someone who's sensitive to gore... please tell me if they show the gory footage in the movie that they did for the Soft Bulletin tour, or any other tour. I don't mind the freaky comics. I heard about the Drozd scene where he "indulges"... is there anything worse?

donut e- (donut), Friday, 8 July 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

the Drozd scene is the worst. it was so painful i had to hide my eyes behind my shirt, and even still, it was hard listening to him talk about shooting up and how it felt. but his explanation later of how wayne got him to kick almost makes up for the wooziness

hipsters unite!, Friday, 8 July 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

I have the DVD.. which chapter is it in? (i'm with you on the hiding the eyes thing, HU.. trust me.)

donut e- (donut), Friday, 8 July 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was referring to the Drozd scene. Ugh.

Huh, I don't remember any gory footage from the Soft Bulletin tour- all I remember were Teletubbies...

cdwill, Friday, 8 July 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

haha I was just burning this and realized that, at SIXTY TWO FRIGGIN MINUTES, this is quite an "EP".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 8 July 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

not sure, donut--it's toward the end, around the time they start getting serious about "christmas on mars"

hipsters unite!, Friday, 8 July 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

Huh, I don't remember any gory footage from the Soft Bulletin tour- all I remember were Teletubbies...

I saw them once and only once at the Music Against Brain Degeneration tour with E.A.R., Sebadoh, and I forget who else.

Anyway, they showed La Chien Andalucia, and then for "The Gash" some horrid footage of, I think a Vietnamese guy... god, I can't type.
Anyway, I think that's when I vowed to never go to a Flaming Lips show again.

donut e- (donut), Friday, 8 July 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I saw them on that tour. I think it was the first time I saw them and I didn't really know what to expect. I was on acid and my gal and I sat through Sonic Boom and his trained farting speak n' spells, Robyn Hitchcock who was pretty good, and Sebadoh who started off pretty and got loud and ugly and horrible for our delicate mental states. We were worried that the whole show would be a bust but the Lips came on and made everything right. Moved us to tears it was so beautiful, and there were very gory aspects to the show. At one point the music was subdued and ambient, and the projections were very hazy and hard to make out. We were all struggling to focus, what was that? What's going on? And suddenly it comes into focus fast BAM it's EYE SURGERY, A CLOSE-UP OF AN EYE GOING UNDER THE KNIFE AAAAAAAAAH!!! And as donut mentions, later during the Gash they alternate between the 30 Minute workout girls doing jumping jacks in time with the music, and that famous video of the Vietnamese general shooting an opposing vietnamese soldier in the head with blood spurting out, over and over. These aspects of the show were brutal, but in context with everything else shown (happy sperms fertilizing eggs, stars being born) it just seemed like an honest piece of a larger whole. Not to say that they weren't deliberately fucking with the crowd. And this was when they were passing out the headphones so everyone could hear the show in stereo. OHOHOH and I remember another bit (sorry this is so long). At the end of "When You Smile," during the last, slow repetition of the chorus ("all of the subatomic pieces come together") a siren rang out loudly , from an ambulance driving by. Wayne stopped and looked around and said "Oh, I hope they're allright..." paused again... and finished the song. It was perfect. Except for whoever the ambulance was for.
