Am I the only one who doesn't "get" Rocket From the Crypt?

I absolutely LOVE Drive Like Jehu, like Hot Snakes, but I have bought "Group Sounds" and "Scream Dracula Scream" by RFTC and didn't like either one. Allmusic lists them as being influenced by Husker Du and the Replacements, my two favorite bands, and John Spencer and Pussy Galore are listed as similar artists, both of whom I'm a huge fan.

But despite all of this, RFTC just sounds like Smash Mouth mixed with a little bit of Turbonegro or something. What am I missing here? I know they've got some huge fans.

What's Group Sounds? Both Circa Now! and All Systems Go! are good (as is some percentage which I can't remember of Paint is a Fragrance.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 7 July 2005 04:11 (twenty years ago)

Note: for some reason the All Systems Go! CD seems to be lacking some songs I remember from the tape copy a friend made me (including a crazed cover of the MC5's "Gold"!!) Still the rest of it should be pretty good if memory recalls.

the state of art is on fire

...all worthy starting points. i happen to believe that you have to live the *RFTC live experience* to truly understand the greatness of this band though!

william (william), Thursday, 7 July 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

Original Japanese version of All Systems Go! has some extra tracks including the "Gold" cover.

Group Sounds = their extremely rock 2001 album. One of my faves.

Live experience = genius.

Band = just plain great.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 July 2005 04:37 (twenty years ago)

I further recommend seeing them live. Live RFTC >> studio RFTC, though I do like some of their studio stuff. I also liked their albums more after seeing them live.

Lingbertt, Thursday, 7 July 2005 04:56 (twenty years ago)

So what's so great about seeing them live? I don't doubt any of your opinions, but I just can't see how their sound translates THAT much better live. Also, is there anywhere (actual albums or maybe places online) that offer RFTC live material?

Sym Sym (sym), Thursday, 7 July 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

Well, Christian, you may not have much to worry about regarding future RFTC -- at least for a while.

That said, their best album is their last album Live From Camp X-Ray from 2002 -- which isn't live. It's their most topical album to date ("post 9/11 bullshit", basically, and meant bitterly) and their least bullshit album as far as production goes. It's a packed solid 29-minute explosion of rock angst with hooks -- of the guitar noise and the melody variety. If you like all the other Reis stuff but not RFTC, I'd recommend Live From Camp X-Ray as a starter. If you think that's too weak, then there's probably not that much hope.. other than the Hot Charity/Cut Carefully And Play Loud two-fer reissue or The State Of The Art Is On Fire.

SARDINES! MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

Well, Christian, you may not have much to worry about regarding future RFTC -- at least for a while

...hmmmm,more cryptic [sorry about the bad pun] comments about the future of RFTC! between you and ned on the hot snakes thread you are making me a little uneasy. also it has been forever since http://rftc.com/ was updated.

everybody smoke pot..everybody smoke pot..everybody smoke pot...me and my brother thought rocket was gonna save our souls at one point

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Thursday, 7 July 2005 10:14 (twenty years ago)

Actually the best way to describe RFTC is probably "Crazy Horses" by the Osmonds as a reason for living.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 7 July 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

it's very weird, I too love pretty much everything John Reis is associated with (Hot Snakes, DLJ, Sultans, Beehive etc.) but have never really gotten into RFTC. I like C:N and SDS pretty well, but they don't quite do it for me the way most of his other projects do, probably b/c of the greaser shtik. Also I like Froberg's voice a ton better.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Thursday, 7 July 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

I've repeatedly compared them to Meat Lover's Pizza. For some people the piles of pepperoni, sausage, bacon, ham, probably cat, just blur together in a samey, irredeemable morass of dietary hell. But for the glutton, there's an imperative to get the two 16" for the price of one special.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 7 July 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

i sometimes think i am the only person for whom scream is their favorite rftc album

strng hlkngtn, Thursday, 7 July 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

did you hear the last two, dude?

btw this thread has inspired me to throw on Group Sounds and reaffirm my devotion.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 7 July 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

I prefer Rocket From The Tombs.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 7 July 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

I am also a nonbeliever, and I have seen them live (though I don't own any albums). Reis had a silly moustache and got pissed off when somebody dripped water on him from the balcony, so that's what you people who haven't seen them live are missing out on. THE RFTC LIVE EXPERIENCE=MOUSTACHES.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 7 July 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

You bigot.

Scream is a freakin' great album and is not to be denied.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 July 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

Ned OTM!

Circa Now and Live at Camp X-Ray are also goodness!

latebloomer: the Clonus Horror (latebloomer), Thursday, 7 July 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

>Am I the only one who doesn't "get" Rocket From the Crypt?<

nope (and i'm proof, as anthony knows well.)

xhuxk, Thursday, 7 July 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

I quite like several tracks on Scream, Dracula, Scream.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 July 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

Chuck liked RFTC awhile back, raved about them in '98, he just got cranky about it (he doesn't like lisps unless their as obnoxious as Tim Armstong's). He should listen to "Tarzan" on All Systems Go and the most "Crazy Horses"y numbers in their catalog.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 7 July 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

They were an AWESOME singles band... you really never thought they'd be able to stop turning them out, until say 92. My friends blamed 91X, I blamed the formula... they fizzled out as they became more conceptual.

And because of Drive Like Jehu, I really had no reason to pay attention to RFTC after Circa:Now!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 7 July 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Actually Tarzan is on All Systems Go 2, but I'm guessing he might find it too slow or something. There's definitely plenty of fallback things one can mention about RFTC (that rhythm section isn't the funkiest ever) if you don't want to acknowledge the good stuff.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 7 July 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Ditto gygax! I don't think I bought anything after Circa: Now! either.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 7 July 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Does the guy in RFTC have a lisp?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 July 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

He has a little one if you pay close attention, but nowhere as big as Tim Armstong's or Steve Whiteman's.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 7 July 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

I like the earlier stuff up to Circa Now. Group Sounds is great but Scream Dracula Scream is not so hot. I prefer Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes, overall.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

And because of Drive Like Jehu, I really had no reason to pay attention to RFTC after Circa:Now!

That's kinda too bad because, while you could have happily ignored most of their 90s output and be happy, their last two albums on Vagrant were a bit of a step back into what made them exciting in the first place, except even better. I find Circa: Now far too one dimensional compared to Group Sounds and Live From Camp X-Ray. Maybe Atom was a soul sucker of some sort, because ever since Rocket got Mario as their drummer, they just peaked.

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

Quite OTM on Circa: Now, which when I went back to the rerelease fell a bit flat outside of a few songs here and there and that fantastic ending, of course.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I'm not even that excited about The State Of The Art Is On Fire, but Cut Carefully And Play Loud, on the other hand (which was released around the time of Group Sounds) may be their single best release ever... but it's an EP and not an album.

And I shouldn't blame Atom for being a soul sucker. That was mean. (Although he was shilling as being part of Weezer's fuck farm/groupie-gathering roadie entourage right after leaving Rocket.) But I think Interscope ended up being a complete drag for the band, and John has been quite happy ever since Swami got off the ground. You can tell.

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

I feel a bit frustrated that John Reis has to be held to this Drive Like Jehu standard. Will I state that Jehu wasn't his best band to date? Of course not. They still stand as one of the best live rock bands I've ever seen.

But there's far more facets to John's output than even RFTC/Sultans and Pitchfork/Jehu/Hot Snakes.. he does TONS of outside anonymous noise music under the name the White Apes.. which is basically John and friends Gar and many others getting, well, really high and just fucking around. Keep in mind that there's a lot of great weirdo-rock history in the early 90s from San Diego, as documented on the Homestead comp Ask For Disorder. Trumans Water, Creedle, Crash Worship, Antioch Arrow, Johnny Superbad, Powerdresser (HOLY SHIT! Talk about one of the most underrated rock bands of the century), Physics, Heavy Vegetable (more poppy, but weirdo tempos), Drip Tank even, Lesser, anything P. Hix did pre Optiganally Yours (even though I love OY, they're not "weirdo rock" really) I could go on... Anyway, John was actively as much a part of that as everyone else.. but he's been more subtle about his participation in it all.

I'm just sick of the Jehu vs. Rocket dichotomy.. I can understand talking about it in the 90s, but it's not really applicable anymore.

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

I pretty much like EVERYTHING he's done better than RFTC, not just Jehu (and I like Hot Snakes better than Jehu anyway). I don't know what it is about RFTC that just kinda puts me off.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

Do you like the Sultans?

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

I just found it hard to take him seriously when RFTC got all shtick-y, esp. in comparison with his performance in Jehu which I prefer, as Rick and the others brought out a lot of interesting and creative playing out of him as opposed to RFTC which seemed to get less and less interesting and more repetitive/re-hash of previous ideas. (And yes granted I stopped paying attention fairly early on).

Also I'm not as high on Hot Snakes as DLJ, I think Hot Snakes are really a *lite*, near Jehu reunion/extension. The first Hot Snakes album was all John's playing and no Rick which lacked the balance the DLJ records had.

That said, I prefer Headstart To Purgatory to Ask For Disorder.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Headstart To Purgatory is another great one!

I forgot to mention Three Mile Pilot above.. probably because they're one of the few bands from that era that haven't officially broken up yet! -- or at least haven't moved or drastically changed. Yeah, yeah, they've taken a six-year hiatus at this point and keep promising to get back together... it's just this pesky Pinback-and-Black-Heart-Procession-being-profitable thing that keeps them from following through.

Also, Eric Hoverstein, ex A Minor Forest/Threnody Ensemble, was and now is (AFAIK) back in San Diego... Not sure what he's up to now.

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

And most overlooked and well overdue for some issue of his stuff is Rafter Roberts. He's mostly known for being a studio guy (alongside Glen Galloway, Soul-Junk meister), but he's released a lot of interesting stuff in the 90s that have yet to see the light of day.

two months pass...
oh, man! their final show was the jam! it was totally badass, from start to finish. we travelled from oatlanta for the show, and we weren't even close to being the farthest away folks on the pilgrimmage. if you don't/didn't like rftc, well... you have some sort of problem. like, a disease or something. sorry. everything john does is great, and rftc is no exception. they played together for, like, 100 years or something. there's plenty of stuff to explore. the schtick was on stage. the music speaks for itself. don't get hung up on the image. if you don't like one album, keep looking. once you find one that suits your fickle tastes, the rest will take hold sooner or later.

may the rocket from the crypt be with you.

all y'all.
