Coinciding with the Society of American Baseball Research convention I'll be attending:

I generally find bhangra cool, but any recommendations from that lineup? As there's nothing else too compelling (at Horseshoe or Lee's) and we're staying near the ballpark, I'll likely get down there (we go to the Jays game Friday night).

three weeks pass...
ka-BUMP

Anyone know much about Tricycle or Sundar Viswanathan, playing Saturday? Man, free outdoor music at midnight -- how decadent by contemporary New York standards!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 1 August 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

can't help with the music, but i did used to live on harbourfront, so i can tell that the venue should be nice. it's a little amphitheatre that faces directly out onto the water. there'll be food tents etc too, but it does get foolishly busy sometimes.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 1 August 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

i regret to inform you that tricycle suck.
banjo-led "ethnic fusion" wankery.
that said, harbourfront is always a nice vibe on the weekend, and Sundar V might be good....
also, if you're here on sunday, there's some brazilian party on the island, and over at lee's, x are playing with dave alvin, but not for free.....

Sundar V is my older cousin once removed and current roommate/giver of shelter (and was probably at least partly responsible for the formative development of my weird 70s/prog/AOR fixations; Don't let that stop you, as I've clung to them more obstinately than he has.). Go see him, he's awesome. He's a jazz prof, great saxophonist, writer, and singer. He does a lot of cross-cultural fusion, in a manner that's much more sophisticated than my efforts at similar things. He really knows and does it all: standards, bossa nova, free, electronica/jazz fusion, classical sax (and, recently, Bollywood!). If I'm not mistaken, this gig will feature Suba Sankaran and Ed Hanley of Autorickshaw (as featured on Metropia!) but don't hold me to that. His new CD is the shit. It will hopefully be available at the gig.

(Is Dr Morbius Alex?)

(Is Dr Morbius Alex?)

No, but both of them will be thrilled at the comparison. :)

I went to high school with Suba Sankaran!

Hahaha! If you mean Alex in SF, we met in June and are OK with each other (I like many people who detest Spielberg films). Thanks Sundar, I'm likely to wander over there by midnight now.

Alas, I'm leaving on Sunday, no Knitters or Roy Halladay.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

Sundar V at midnight, yes?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 6 August 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Yes, at midnight. Lakeside Terrace.
