Songs that affect you strongly, but you're not really sure why...

...it's 'Modern Romance' by The Yeah Yeah Yeahs for me. I would say it's their strongest song, or lyrically meaningful for me, but when it turns up on shuffle, I feel unaccountably sad.

"primal" by slowdive... I don't know why but, it always makes me cry. every single broke up i have gone through that has been the soundtrack to it. the guitars goes stratospheric at the end and it just makes me melt... second would be "pink, orange, red by cocteau twins... when they performed it live at the beacon theatre in NY on the heaven or las vegas tour every time she would hit the opening phrase to the "chorus" it felt like someone was punching you square in the gut. i am a really overly sensitive person so i could list more but, these two come straight to mind.

higher power - jens lekman...something so juvenile, yet so pretty.

Bone Thugs n Harmony - "Tha Crossroads"

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 7 July 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

Flamingos - "I Only Have Eyes for You". I find this song incredibly disturbing and creepy (but also great) and I've never quite figured out why. Also Archie Bell & The Drells "Tighten' Up" strikes me as very sad even though it's supposed to be a party jam.

Wire – "Kidney Bingos," especially when Graham Lewis starts in on those creepy basso profundo harmonies, to be joined by Colin Newman. I start to cry, for no reason. It's beautiful.

the acoustic version of cherry chapstick by yo la tengo I find to be incredibly saddening, more so than the original faux-sy version. Big Star's Holocaust gets me, too.

On the other hand, the Buzzcocks - Why Can't I Touch It and Spoon - Paper Tiger make me very happy.

when he sings about those money spine paper lungs, do you just know exactly what he's talking about, Al?

Fuxa - Pleasant Orbitings It's perhaps the happiest, most calming song ever.

Tokyo Ghost Stories (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Thursday, 7 July 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

Nick Drake - Fruit Tree
Slowdive - Sing

That's odd, I only just recently stopped having to listen to it every day.

Until She Comes - Furs

God damn that song!!! Everytime it comes on, I have to stop everything and listen very attentively!!!

Yo La Tengo, "Autumn Sweater." Heard it in a record store once and became absolutely, helplessly overcome with emotion.

June Tabor's version of 10,000 Maniacs' "Verdi Cries" is one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. I'm getting shivers just thinking about it.

Sweet Caroline, Mandy, Drowned Lovers (okay, I can sort of see why) and It Was A Good Day.

Songs that Emotionally Affect You, though without an apparent reason....

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 8 July 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

ELO's Telephone Line really affected me the other day on the bus to work, and I don't know why.

whenuweremine (whenuweremine), Friday, 8 July 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

If "Modern Romance" by The YYYs really affected you, then don't listen to Tommy James & The Shondells' "Crimson & Clover" or you'll ball your eyes out.

For me it's "She Smiled Sweetly" by the Rolling Stones and "Miss X" by the MC5.

Oops, posted this on the old thread by mistake:

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Friday, 8 July 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

In that song Will Smith addresses to his son, I lose it whenever he says "Don't be afraid to cry, there's no shame in it." It's just so damned sweeeeeeeet. *getting sniffly now*
