Why can't I get into Talk Talk?

I listened to the Spirit of Eden and It's My Life albums but I just can't get into them. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Disregard It's My Life (except the title track). For me, Talk Talk starts with The Colour of Spring, but I got into the band by listening to "I Believe In You" enough to realize that it's one of the most amazing pieces of music I've ever heard. That led me to listen patiently and intently to Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock, the latter containing "After the Flood" and "New Grass" -- the band's other 2 masterpiece songs.

But I pretty much started with the more accessible songs like "I Believe in You" and "New Grass".......after a while you realize that there's much more going on in these albums than you could possibly ever imagine or hope to experience in "rock" music again. Truly original, epochal, perfect, etc.

Cool. Thanks, PB.

A friend told me she would like them more if she was "on drugs."

Jamey Lewis (Jameys Burning), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

so "take drugs."

Spirit of Eden is, like, the perfect ecstasy come-down disc.

Tigerstyle Shamanic Vision Quester (sexyDancer), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

I can relate. I prefer The Colour of Spring to Spirit of Eden: actual songs, narratives, and the schlockier elements that marked their earlier highpoints on It's My Life are still in place. I reeeeallly have to be feeling blah and lazy to put on Laughing Stock. It's one of those beautiful albums I never remember to play.

YES. I was afraid to say it!

Jamey Lewis (Jameys Burning), Thursday, 7 July 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

(sorry, I was referring to the ecstasy comment)

PB OTM about "New Grass". Such a great song, especially when everything cuts out except the drums and piano

Uncledoj, Thursday, 7 July 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

lay on the couch, close your eyes (a little weed if you like), it's the only way. still don't like it? move on but come back a little later

Rizz (Rizz), Thursday, 7 July 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

Oh, one more thing -- headphones are a MUST. Shut the lights off, lie in bed, and turn it up. The transition "Ascension Day" to "After the Flood" will make you lose your shit (on Laughing Stock that is).

I also enjoy pretending I'm one of the record execs listening to Spirit of Eden for the first time....hehe.

A zombie is physically identical to a normal human being, but completely lacks conscious experience. Zombies look and behave like the conscious beings that we know and love, but "all is dark inside." There is nothing it is like to be a zombie.

I'm not on drugs and Spirit of Eden is one of my favourite albums. I think the key is to not expect anything that will blatantly explode at you.

Yeah, as it happens I've only listened to Talk Talk completely sober, and SoE and LS are two of my alltime faves. But different strokes etc.

fourteen years pass...

Today I found all of Talk Talk’s five LPs at a Goodwill in Chandler, AZ for $1.29 each. I’ve never knowingly heard them so I’ll start with The Party’s Over. That’s all.

Great score. Someday I’ll find non-garbage at a thrift store.

My own version of this thread would be “why can’t I get into The Blue Nile”?

want to know when yelploaf first freaks out. 'life's what you make it'? maybe much earlier tbh

Tomorrow started, perhaps

Colour of Spring.. Man, I know people go on about the final two albums and they are great, but that album is solid

In answer to the original question, does it matter? It's okay not to like things.

(I utterly adore Laughing Stock, mind).

yelploaf is currently sitting in a dark room with only a lava lamp in a corner to provide light, freaking out

that really was a vinyl score!
i've never seen a secondhand copy of colour of spring or spirit of eden. i pledge to purchase one on sight (...if they're under $30 i guess)

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Sunday, 5 January 2020 17:36 (six years ago)

I blagged an OG copy of Colour of Spring from a charity shop for £1.50. In decent nick, too.

Hahaha Karl. You nailed it. I listened last night to The Party’s Over and It’s My Life loudly in the dark by salt lamp light. TPO primed me but I really locked in by ‘Such a Shame.’
Standouts so far are ‘It’s My Life’ and ‘Does Caroline Know?’.
Tonight I’ll spin The Colour of Spring.
I was previously put off by their rep of post-rock gods after my youthful burn-out on Fridge, Bundy K. Brown, Slint etc.
So far this is not that and I love it.

Yelploaf, Sunday, 5 January 2020 17:57 (six years ago)

trust me, even their post-rock is not that

it's always been my favorite. Unlike LS or SoE, you can play it in any mood you happen to be in and it still sounds great. Even while driving. Try listening to LS while driving sometime.

"Life's What You Make It," "Living in Another World," "Time It's Time" - nothing better.

Paul Ponzi, Sunday, 5 January 2020 23:00 (six years ago)

Be sure not to miss this amazing b-side from the 'Colour of Spring' era. Makes more sense of the connections between that album and the final two--besides being possibly the best non-album track of all time (to me at least):

that's like a top ten all-time song full stop, b-side or otherwise, Hollis' mastery of soulful prosody is so complete it doesn't even matter that the words are 99% unintelligible
