it seems like you've just gotten into everything lately. thanks for the pitchfork news update, though. we needed a thread on q and not u breaking up.

"disband" is a great word for when a band breaks up.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 7 July 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, I always thought these guys sounded like Fugazi-lite. But I saw them live a couple of times and they were pretty good.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 7 July 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

woah. that show in DC is a free outdoor thingie. there's gonna be a shit-ton of folks there.

also: are there any active DC bands now that are even slightly well-known on a national level?

matlewis, Thursday, 7 July 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

I just saw this too, and it is sad. Now they are gone and Black Eyes are gone. I enjoyed both of these bands (Black Eyes more, certainly) and they made Dischord seem like it still had a pulse.

matt2 (matt2), Thursday, 7 July 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

so did that nike ad.

Maybe Dischord will get bought by some other label and preserved as a nostalgia thing, like Stax or Sun.

Does Ted Leo/Pharmacists count?

Lyra Jane (Lyra Jane), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

no, he's from jersey

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Bring back Faraquet!11

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

faraquet's new band = medications

Mary Timony is now in the DC area, although she owes her prominence to Matador, not the Dischord set.

I suppose Travis Morrison counts as nationally known.

I'm not mourning this news after the tremendous letdown of their last album. Sure liked "Different Damage" though.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

The last album was theie weakest, but I still think they had a great album in them.

what. a. shame.

Do you mean by college radio retards?

no tech! (ex machina), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Are Medications on Dischord? are they any good?

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

I liked their last record. Hope some of the members go on in this disco/funky direction.

djangojones (djangojones), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Hurting, have you ever heard Akarso?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

yes, medications are on dischord. full length out soon.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

I was more distraught when Black Eyes broke up. I don't think many people liked them, though I can understand why.

Jamey Lewis (Jameys Burning), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

I definitely would have preferred if Black Eyes had stuck around longer than Q and Not U.

sure, or.. ya know.. anyone.

uh, autoclave's record was put out by dischord, long before helium.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Yeah the loss of Black Eyes seemed more tragic to me as well as it seemed they had something very interesting to offer. I feel like a truly great album was still to come from them. Any idea if any of the members are doing anything else?

matt2 (matt2), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

A few of them have done other projects in the DC area (White Flight, Horses). Their bass player, Jacob Long, moved out to California when they broke up.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 7 July 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Sean and Hugh from Black Eyes run Ruffian Records, which is hopefully going to put out some Horses stuff soon (although I heard somewhere that they were changing their name to Black At It??) and Jacob and Daniel are doing something called 'water wolves'. Wish I had heard White Flight though when they were playing shows- someone said they were pretty sick live.

Kevin H (Kevin H), Thursday, 7 July 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

So is there anything available from White Flight or Horses currently?

matt2 (matt2), Thursday, 7 July 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

Yeah this makes me feel real sad as Q And Not U were one of my favorite new bands. I did think Power was a little weak, but the first two records are just classic to me. Maybe they were a little derivative, but they were undoubtedly talented, simultaneously making great records (to me, at least) while demonstrating that they had a great future.

Roadkill Bingo (Roadkill Bingo), Thursday, 7 July 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Autoclave was good!

no tech! (ex machina), Thursday, 7 July 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

No, I think Horses are putting out something in the near future, but from what I've heard, White Flight just played live shows, never recorded anything.

Kevin H (Kevin H), Thursday, 7 July 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

while demonstrating that they had a great future

So they were LYING.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 July 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Wish I had heard White Flight though when they were playing shows- someone said they were pretty sick live

I caught them twice, and both shows were pretty awesome actually - noisy as shit but swingin', guitar/sax/drums free-improv stuff. I dug em.

From their website-

7/7/05 - Dear Friends....

After seven years, hundreds of shows, thousands of miles, 46 states, four continents, three albums, only one flat-tire and countless nicknames for Shawn Brackbill, Q and Not U is disbanding.

With all of your support, we feel that we've reached all of our shared goals as Q and Not U and we're ready to move on to other projects in life. We all hope to play music together again someday, but we feel that it's a beautiful and natural time to bring this band to a close.

How can we possibly thank everyone for the incredible friendship and support you've shown us over the years? We've always viewed this band as something that extends far beyond the three of us and we're eternally grateful for all the love you've shown. We're so happy to have shared such an important chapter of our lives with you. Thanks for being beautiful.

We're still playing a handful of shows this summer, (Siren Festival, the Stone Pony, Fort Reno), and we are currently confirming some farewell shows in D.C. for September. Those details will be announced shortly. Again, thank you for making all of this possible for us.

All of our love: John, Harris, Chris
