They seem to be a band that rarely gets any discussion here. Tantilla is one of my favorite American indie albums from the 80s, but I've never heard anything else by them. This is the thread for your thoughts on House of Freaks.

Critics seem to prefer Monkey On A Chain Gang, but Tantilla is indeed where a wealth of their best material lies. Cakewalk wasn't good then, and it's even worse now. And I never heard the album after that one (Invisible Jewel), so I can't speak to its quality. But, considering how steep a downhill slope they were one, I'll assume it's not very good.

Cakewalk is great, you clod.

What? How?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 8 July 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

"Rocking Chair", "I Got Happy", "I Confess", "Good Man", "This is it", "Ants"......these are all great songs.

Yeah, it's pretty good. Also classic: the 'All My Friends' EP.

their role in gutterball was classic, at least for the first album and tour.

I only remember the first album, which I liked. I had Tantilla but don't remember it, except for "Kill the Mockingbird." It's kind of surprising they don't come up more vis-a-vis the White Stripes, given the similar obsessions with blues motifs and Americana. "40 Years" was a nice single. And Johnny Hott was a hot drummer.

(House of Freaks leader and his family murdered)

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 15:45 (twenty years ago)

I lived in Richmond for seven years; this has really shocked me.

I remember saying hi to Bryan once in Plan 9. He was buying a Jackie Gleason album out of the used bargain bin.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 18:14 (twenty years ago)

oh man, that is horrible.

A Harvey family friend, Johnny Hott, encountered the smoke when he and his daughter arrived about 1:40 p.m. to help the family prepare for a 2 o'clock New Year's Day cookout.

wasn't he the drummer in hof? i can't imagine how terrible it must've been to see your good friend and his family murdered.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Yes, he was the HoF drummer. I live in Richmond and the whole town is mourning this, esp. the music community. Both parents were so well known and liked. So hard to get your head around this, how someone could methodically kill an entire family.

I seriously had to go to the bathroom at work and puke when I read this. :( :(

Dom iNut (donut), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 18:59 (twenty years ago)

OH FUCK. i don't even know how to react to this, besides the fact that i'm currently crying. i had met bryan (and johnny hott) through a friend who shot a gutterball video, and they're both great musicians and really really good people. oh fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck.
