Good Zeppelin Covers

Are there any? Their songs seem particularly hard to cover. Perhaps this is a reflection of how important production is to their records. Zeppelin as a sonic experience first and foremost, even though a lot of their songs seem well constructed in terms of melody and chords. So who has covered Page/Plant and done it well?

The Black Crowes are widely loathed (for good reason), but their album with Jimmy Page -- essentially a Zeppelin covers collection -- rocked in all the right ways. Chris Robinson's voice was shockingly well suited to the material, and their drummer played a fair Bonzo.

Dread Zeppelin's cover of "Your Time is Gonna Come" is better than the original.

I totally agree. (Most of Dread's stuff is novelty, but this track was the nice).

they did put out "battle of evermore" a couple decades later, on the "singles" soundtrack, recording as the lovemongers. and it's pretty good.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 19 March 2006 15:18 (twenty years ago)

I'm not aware of any making a legit release, and I'm going by a nearly 20 year old memory, but Camper Van Beethoven used to do some pretty decent Led Zep covers in concert as I recall.

dlp9001, Sunday, 19 March 2006 22:51 (twenty years ago)

I'd love to have heard Elvis and the TCB! Band do a version of "Black Dog". That could have been over the top great.

earlnash, Sunday, 19 March 2006 23:00 (twenty years ago)

a perfect circles cover of 'when the levee breaks' is interesting

Telephonething (Telephonething), Monday, 20 March 2006 03:16 (twenty years ago)

Ridiculous thread, should be more truth in advertising, like retitling indie/altie/noise/joke/pigfuck assorted acts known for slaughtering Led Zeppelin or how to make LZ not rock. Better off looking into the metal arena. Great White did an LP, Great Zep. Michael White Play the Music of Led Zeppelin is pretty obscure but also in the same vein. Even the Studio 99 hacks did better covers than most of these.

George 'the Animal' Steele, Wednesday, 22 March 2006 20:55 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

Golden Palominos did a good "When the Levee Breaks" live with Syd Straw on vocals, Jack Bruce on bass.

I already started that shit once this week. I keep that up, I may as well be arguing about Wilco on the internet.

I had forgotten about this one. It really is good! (Though I haven't heard it in probably 20 years.)

It's kinda a cover: I really love the Page & Plant Moroccan revamp of "Four Sticks" on the No Quarter album.
