VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 9 July 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

I don't wanna say too much about the new AAR cuz I gotta review it but its not as good as the self-titled debut. I think because they have a real rhythm section now and they're thinking 'live' rather than spector-esque. That said I only listened to it once so the songs may grow on me.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 9 July 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

And to reaffirm I mean they're thinking 'what can we play live' rather than 'we'd like to sound like Live.'

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 9 July 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

17:03 - I'm doing nothing - Sufjan Stevens: come on feel the illinoise.

It's 2:01 p.m. I'm just about to drive several kilometres to take some photographs for the newspaper I work for. While driving, I'll be listening to the rarities CD from that recent Yo La Tengo collection. When I'm finished, I'm going to buy a few cans of Strongbow as a precursor to a night of bar-hopping.

BanjoMania (Brilhante), Saturday, 9 July 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

It's about 1:00 pm here...I just came back to my office from lunch (two slices of barbecue chicken pizza) and I'm listening to Aphex Twin's "Ageispolis". Khaki pants, white cotton button-down shirt, camper shoes. This track is very soothing to the digestion, yes it is.

p.j. (Henry), Saturday, 9 July 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

It's 4:11 PM. I'm wearing black shorts and a thrift store shirt with some anime character. I'm listening to Eddie Palmieri's Unfinished Masterpiece, eating a Burmese noodle salad (I'm not sure this is the one I ordered, but nearly all the salads at this Burmese restaurant share many of the same ingredients), and about to do spend my evening constructively, I hope.

RS LaRue (RSLaRue), Saturday, 9 July 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

From 6:00 till 8:00 PM we listened to the Providence RI Espanol station spin rap, and reggaeton, and salsa, and all kinds of stuff while we barbecued burgers and corn and hotdogs and big fat mushrooms and drank beer and ran around. it was great. sorry, i know this is past-tense. but it just happened!

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 10 July 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm a firm believer that homework is bad for your health.

Hydrochloric Shaved Weirds (Bimble...), Sunday, 10 July 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

Midnight, trying not to think about somebody I didn't manage to talk into leaving Gulf Shores, which is now even more behind the Hurricane Dennis SuperEightBall than it was when I last got through her fitfully functional phone. Not that she's stubborn, but too tired and scared and used to dealing with hurricanes to drive so far (the only reason she was here as the lead-in to freelancementalists'Music To Listen To While Waiting For Hurricane Ivan is cause she was *already* here before that, and couldn't go back down there in the pre-storm [tornado appetizer])But this has just now been confirmed as Category 4, worse than Ivan, and hasn't even reached landfall in G.S. yet. Also still looking at the London and Birmingham threads and googles. The music in the last few minutes: The Hoosier Hotshots,"The Pants My Pappy Gave Me"; Patsy Montana, "I Wanna Be A Cowboy's Sweetheart (dire yodeling, barely non-Swiss)(no offense to the Swiss, but doesn't fit); something boring by Chris Smither, and something Latin, artist and title garbled by Tuscaloosa DJ (not cos he's Southern, but an eagerbeaver folkie, like Chris Smither--and Pasty Montana, in this instance)Damn, if I only had their unabashededness, maybe I could've talked her into leaving.

don, Sunday, 10 July 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

Sorry to be the bringdown--MTV and VH-1 "re"-ran Live8 after getting so much derision for their first fardling, and McCartney's "Helter Skelter" was amazing, random and yet not, like Hurricane Dennis the Menace will seem, no doubt (hey, where was Gwen? Where were the Africans?)No wonder the Manson Family adopted it. Stevie Wonder's "Shame On Me" is new, isn't it? Worked as well as the old ones, which is saying a lot (I've heard some good instrumental covers lately--is Smooth Jazz getting funkier, or is it just me?--but nobody can *sing* like him)

don, Sunday, 10 July 2005 04:41 (twenty years ago)

12:45 am, and my friends just left. We sat around getting high and drinking beer and playing Trivial Pursuit. I was listening to Do Make Say Think until I came onto ILX and read the Archie Bell and the Drells thread, and so I put on "Tighten Up." But you know, I just typed "Archie" into iTunes, and up popped "Archie Ebersole" and "Archie Shepp," so they're planning now, too.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 10 July 2005 04:44 (twenty years ago)

Archie Shepp's "Mama Too Tight": one of the first tracks by a Leroi Jones-anointed Free Jazz artist I ever heard. Proto-skronk-funk, and what a relief to actually dig it!

don, Sunday, 10 July 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

Almost 10 after 5 in the Detroit suburbs...I just got done listening to the Jet album a guy from work burned me last year around this time. Before that, it was a U.S. Life/Fort Thunder compilation and a Greenhornes album while I cleaned out my car and drank Budweiwser tall boys, and a live Tentacle Lizardo CD-R (Detroit no wave/surf/weirdo greatness) and some flamenco while I showered. I'm buzzzed, thinking about what I should put on next.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Sunday, 10 July 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

5:10 in NYC, sitting in the back of my café (I co-own a tiny café) at the mercy of an iPod's shuffle; it just segued from the Auteurs' "Johnny and the Hurricanes" into Malkmus's "Post Paint Boy."

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 10 July 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

I just finished listening to a mix CD for a friend (to make sure the "flow" was right). The last five songs were:

Like Moving Insects -- Who'll Stop the Rain
Mike Wexler -- March Violets
David Axelrod -- The Human Abstract
Tortoise -- C.T.A.
Busta Rhymes -- Gimme Some More

The first two work great because they're in the same key, similar tempos, and both have nylon string guitar. The third is intended to be a change in mood. The fourth kind of brings you back to cheeriness after the darkness, and the last one is meant to feel sort of like a fun "bonus track."

Otherwise I'm basically trying to be idle, and I'm about to read some Nabokov.

Hurting (Hurting), Sunday, 10 July 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

10.19pm in glasgow, UK. i'm checking ILX and listening to the last song on the new sleater-kinney album before going to iron some shirts and watch "i heart huckabees" on DVD with mrs fiendish.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 10 July 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 10 July 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

5:22 PM, watching the blustery winds from Dennis outside my back window (it's not raining anymore and it's already made landfall two hours to my west), listening to Breathless - The Glass Bead Game on repeat. Excellent hurricane music.
