I recently bought the Tzadik release by the Japanese microtonal duo "SyZyGys". I think they are annoyingly wonderful--perfect to sing out of tune to! I would like to hear about other encounters with them, etc. or recommendations.

I think John Zorn likes microtones, another Tzadik release (which is wonderful) is Mamoru Fujieda's 'Patterns of Plants'. Kotos and lutes are all tuned differently, giving a seasick, medieval feel to the music.

I am signing a microtonal folk group to my label American Patchwork. They're students at Oberlin College, Ohio, and call themselves The Gongs. Harry Partch meets Low or the Incredible String Band.

Oberlin is one of the most fucked up colleges in the world, full of religious weirdness and middle-america-scary-hippy-types who live in an alternate butterfly universe.

Which is a good thing, yes?

five years pass...

SyZyGys's Complete Studio Recordings is still one of my very favorite discs ever. Listening to it always seems to lead me into an incredibly good mood.

"D.P.O" and "Dohyo" are two of the most joyous things ever. I can listen to those two on repeat for hours!
