TK SDS: Dream Syndicate vs. Only Ones

I think I know where the Massive will stand on this one.

I don't know enough about the bands' histories to know if they were connected in any way, but I hear a lot similiarities. Having only recently got into Days of Wine and Roses, DS is becoming one of my favorite new discoveries -- I can't choose here.

Predictably, I say Dream Syndicate.

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 10 July 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Off the top of my head, I don't hear many similarities. But did Dream Syndicate ever write a song as good as "Another Girl, Another Planet?"

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Sunday, 10 July 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Did the DS ever write a fuckin song even? No.

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 10 July 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

The Dream Syndicate hit is nice, but it's no "The Whole of The Law" and "Another Girl, Another Planet"

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 10 July 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Only Ones by a mile.

four years pass...

I call bullshit on this one. Listening to the best of Dream Syndicate today and it's one amazing tune after another. "Halloween", "Tell Me When It's Over", "Merritville", "I Have Faith" - damn Wynn really had a way of inviting you into his world and putting his arm over your shoulder, yet never fully letting you be comfortable.

Much as a dig The Only Ones, it's DS all the way.

only ones ruled. did dream syndicate ever rule? nope, they didn't. they were good though. but not great. only ones were great.

scott seward, Thursday, 10 September 2009 20:14 (sixteen years ago)

i would even take the only ones over the saints! yeah, you heard me. and nobody even asked me to.

scott seward, Thursday, 10 September 2009 20:15 (sixteen years ago)

That's just crazy talk, Scott. Saints over both of 'em. Especially when the horns came in!

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 10 September 2009 20:16 (sixteen years ago)

i always want to like the saints more than i do. it's weird. i want something to be better than stranded and nothing ever is. whereas, with the only ones, i find all their stuff to be equally addictive. my favorite saints album is actually all fools day! so, i'm just some sorta weirdo.

scott seward, Thursday, 10 September 2009 20:19 (sixteen years ago)

i'd take the weirdos over the saints too. and the dickies. and maybe even the nuns. definitely the avengers over the saints. germs album is better than first saints album too.

scott seward, Thursday, 10 September 2009 20:21 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I finally bought the Dangerhouse and Live At The Masque series and have been immersed in LA punlk too.

But really, the best Only Ones album is the Peel sessions! Their proper albums never did them justice.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 10 September 2009 21:06 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, agreed -- Only Ones Peel Sessions is by far the one I want to listen to the most. Proper albums definitely have their moments, but there are some poor production choices ... Anyone buy the new reissues?

Very otm

It's kind of like the ideal of what you want every live band to sound like but they never quite pull off.

The section entitled "A Small Drumming Miracle" is truly amazing.
