m83 vs. air

I couldn't take Moon Safari out of my Macintosh G3 when I first got a hold of it. I liked to say "FRENCH BAND" to my friend because that's what it said next to their logo. Their Frenchness seemed to embellish the retro-fitted sound for me, the R&B-twinged tracks were some of my faves. Red Cities.. by M83 didn't seem to deliver on the hype for me, but I'm really starting to dig When the Dawn Fadesf and it definitely kills Talkie Walkie for me. I haven't heard the other Air releases outside these two, but still...which French synth outfit kills the other?

M83 are french?

I'm not sure if they're comparable. Air's has some AOR love and 70s throwbackism (esp around the Virgin Suicides soundtrack) whereas M83 is all about the wall of shoegazerism. Talkie Walkie sounds like a more vocal-oriented version of what they were doing between their first album and their soundtrack work.

You should pick up the underrated 10,000Hz Legend and compare it. I think its strength is that you'll always think there are a couple duds if you listen to the album straight through, but depending on your mood, you'll change your mind on what the duds are!

air all the way!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 11 July 2005 02:56 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i think air would win this one. 10,000 Hz. Legend is friggin' awesome.

That One Guy (That One Guy), Monday, 11 July 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure if they're comparable.

you've just told us how they are, mike!

10,000Hz the Legend is vastly overrated and it's the only Air album that I can say I safely like, the other two I can take or leave.

I must acquire this Ten Thousand Mega-Hertz you speak of.

And what about the soundtrack to Virgin Suicides? Is it good?

p.j. (Henry), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

there is some nice stuff on it but all a bit samey. get Premiers Symptomes if you haven't already tho (ideally the '99 re-issue featuring the two new tracks).

'Le Soleil Est pres De Moi' is still the best thing Air have done, with the exception of 'La Femme D'Argent' perhaps.

My skills of self-contradiction strike again. They're kind of like French apples and oranges, but the oranges are both electronic and... ok, they're pretty much limes and lemons.

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

The record store clerk who sold me the new M83 described it as "poppier" than the first one because there were more vocals. I'm not sure about that one. Sure it's less sound-scapey than the first, but it ain't freakin' Herman's Hermits. It's fun to listen to with the windows down, brah.

p.j. (Henry), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

there is no comparison at all here. m83 are the greatest band in the fuckin' world and you want to compare them to air? a couple of grinning chancers whose inoffensive noodling soundtracked many a smug-ass dinner party back in the substantially less-than-halcyon days of 1997?

gaaah!

so, to summarise: m83.

(that said: i did have a minor epiphany listening to "sexy boy" on some crackly radio station while passing the statue of liberty on the staten island ferry. but still. air: background noise for the bourgeoisie.)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

no

Nevada Lime (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

m83 is so boring

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

i guess i like the remixes, or at least some of them, but mostly m83 sounds like the worst new-age birth of the starchild zzzness
