So, if Melissa Etheridge does a cover of Tom Petty's "Refugee", does that make it a gay anthem?

"considering what I'd been through" -- maybe this refers to surviving cancer (also mentioned on her news page), but the first thing that came to my mind was the whole gay marriage thing.

"where I was at" -- i hate this. "at" should not be the last word in a sentence.

Whatever, man. I saw Amy Ray cover this, like, five years ago, which made it an awesome gay anthem and makes Melissa Etheridge about half a decade too slow.

Unless she's making it a cancer anthem, which makes it one of a kind.
