The Coughs

Does anyone actually own Fright Makes Right? I'm not a big downloading person, but I downloaded this album because I couldn't find it anywhere in stores. I was wondering if the album comes with lyrics though...it's really hard to make out what she's saying, and if it does then that would definitely make it worth pursuing a copy.

Also, what other bands are similar? To me, Fright Makes Right sounds exactly like the Black Eyes' Cough, and both of these albums are "right up my alley."

I have something by The Coughs, but I can't find it right now and forget what it's called. I think it's just "The Coughs EP." It sounds really bad. I bought it off them at a show maybe a year or two ago. They were cool live, just a badly recorded CD.

I actually hadn't realized they'd been signed to Load -- the thing I bought was a CD-R, and both times I saw them were basement-type shows. By the way, you can buy it from the Load website.

Here's a somewhat stupid review from Pitchfork. Surprise.

i'm sorry you didn't like my "skiiing down vaginas" joke

Nick Sylvester, Monday, 11 July 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

Your review is more childish than their album. And it sounds like you have problems with female singers (by the way -- I don't hear Kim Deal at all).

It sounds like I hate them, but since writing the review their sound's grown on my somewhat, tho it's not even close to the best Load record ever released.

p.s. I heart Courtney Love and Kim Deal.

I don't actually know the album. Maybe it deserves a 6.5. I just don't like the flippant way Sylvester wrote his review. I've only seen them live, and I rather enjoyed them, but I think a lot of it was in the performance (the saxophonist is a big, awkward guy who often wears dresses, there are two drummers banging on a lot of junk in addition to regular drums).

One of the weird things about the self-made EP I got of theirs (I remember now it was called "Bent Babies" -- I think) is that it included, as a bonus track "Tight Spot" by Lee Perry -- which was unaltered as far as I could tell. Great song, but odd choice to put someone else's track on your EP.

I definitely got the impression from the album that they might translate better to a live setting, but there are so many other groups I'd rather see live, you know?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

I suppose. I was lucky enouch to see them twice, pre-signing, I suppose. Once in a basement in college, once at a warehouse in Philly where a friend of mine lives, which has since become known as "The Warehouse" and has since no longer become the residence of my friend, because he's no longer my friend.

My old band played with them at an incredible ill-attended show at Free103 in brooklyn in december 2003. they were good live. recorded... meh. i am RIGHT NOW though, wearing a Coughs t-shirt that they gave me.

Saw 'em in Detroit (okay, Hamtramck) a few weeks back. I liked them. They kinda sounded like early Pussy Galore. Not sure if I'd buy the album, though. I'll often end up disappointed buying albums from bands like that. White Mice played that same show and were great, but I was kinda disappointed with the album I bought.

WHITE MICE!!! FWIW, the White Mice/Coughs show in NYC is at Lit and 21+, so I can't go.

WAY TO GO BEN.

the CD doesn't have lyrics with it, no. too bad, yeah.

haven't managed to see them live, i was recovering from surgery when they played a couple hours from here. the album definitely does not deserve a 6.5 rated review that is ill-informed and more interested in non sequiturs than the album. maybe it pales next to their live show, i'm not sure, but it sounds great to me.
