That Legend of Xanadu routine with the whip used to scare the pants off me as a toddler. But weren't they a weird band? What were Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley (I think that's how he spells it) putting in their day-old tea? Surely something stronger than Polo mints or Tippex?

Bend those answers!

The group name was inexcusable in that it CONDONED SCHOOLYARD NICKNAMES.

MarkH, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Fall covered it = it must be brilliant.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually bought the single ("Bend It") as a wee lad!

An article in The Times a couple of years ago implicitly denied the existence of "Hold Tight" (it's a long story). More proof of the stupidity of the Murdoch industry, because "Hold Tight" is a masterpiece.

I love this board!

Howard & Blaikley!!!! Yayyyy! The stuff they wrote for the Herd is among the best UK pop-psych ever. And yeah, Legend of Xanadu always used to give me the creeps as a toddler, yet was somehow strangely attractive. Not to mention "Have I The Right". Tea ingredient? 3 spoonfuls.

harvey williams, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh my God - Have I The Right! Genius, genius, genius. What a song + Joe Meek's production!

There's an amazing Joe Meek track on Nuggets 2 - 'Crawdaddy Simone' by the Syndicats - incredibly primitive R+B performed in an echo chamber.

Dr.C, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wasn't Dave Dee the copper who pulled a dying Eddie Cochran out of his car wreck, yet still chose the road over the beat. Dr C, you understate the genius of 'Crawdaddy Simone' (from 1965!) by a factor of a million. It makes 'I Heard Her Call My Name' sound like Herman's Hermits, dagnamit. Only The Mystic Tide's 'Frustration' can compete in the 'rowdy teenagers accidently invent noise rock without having prepared a theoretical justification beforehand' stakes.

Snotty Moore, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Crawdaddy Simone" is indeed as good as Snotty implies. Truly breathtaking; you do not need any other noise rock record apart from this one. Except "I Don't Care" by mental Icelandic combo Thor's Hammer. Again, no theories, just an insane racket.

harvey williams, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thor's Hammer have apparently reformed. Or reTHORmed, even.

Baby, you without me is like Dave Dee without Dozy, Beaky Mick & Tich -- you'll NEVER go platinum!

Sorry it's taken awhile to get back to you, Snotty, but TELL ME MORE!!! Off board, if necessary...

Not sure whether that's true or not but he was one of the first on the scene.

You want interesting? Well, I don't know who has led the most interesting life out of their record producer, Steve Rowland or their co-manager/co-song writer, Ken Howard, but they've both had very interesting lives:

During the making of five films in Spain, Rowland enjoyed Spanish chart success with the group, Los Flaps.

Weird how those wiki links didn't work though. Try again.

I had "Zabadak" (and "The Legend of Xanadu" but) from when I ws a kid and I had about 50 7" singles..

So, I'd recommend you check out "The sun goes down" for awesomeness, but it's now fully recognised as an amazing b-side by the hipsters, so.. anyway.. yeah still check it out.

Hmm, 'Crawdaddy Simone' yeah? Gonna have to find that, sounds right up my st.

Mark G, Tuesday, 5 April 2022 10:24 (three years ago)

Ah, it's on a box set I own, it's in the loft whoopee...

Mark G, Tuesday, 5 April 2022 10:27 (three years ago)

Yes, I was listening to a best of yesterday which had "The Sun Goes Down' on it. Strange band, kitschy gimmicky bubblegum with a kind of stomping football terrace side to them. They were outselling the Beatles at one point! Dave Dee had a good pop voice.

I suppose so, Dozy and Tich were really good.
