Ooh, sounds lovely, even though I don't really like Tuxedomoon for some reason I can't explain.

you know, if i'd filled this mix up with nothing but "two tickets to paradise" it'd be just as good.

president carter loves repetition (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

Haha! Nah, I wouldn't think so...

I'm very amused by Wilson Phillips being up there, though. I haven't though about them in years, save for Carnie Wilson or whatever when she appears on tabloids.

the pylon pick is partially your fault... it's been rattling around my head for weeks!

Oooh, the Wygals.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Monday, 11 July 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

Jody, where's the Everlys thing from? I'm not sure if I own that.

it's their "psych" single from 1967.

president carter loves repetition (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 11 July 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Oh, it's on the boxed set I have. I don't recall it the way I do "Lord of the Manor," tho. [Heads to stack of boxed sets in loft.]

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Monday, 11 July 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

i think it's about how they like (*whispers*) marijuana.

The Everly Brothers "The Everly Brothers Sing" (Warner Brothers, 1967)
Pursuing a lighter, brighter, perkier pop sound akin to the Association or bands of that ilk, the Everlys sound a little desperate for a hit here, and indeed they were. The album's opener, a punchy reworking of "Bowling Green," cracked into the Top 40, but it was the last of their singles that would rise that high on the charts... The rest of the album is a mish-mosh of styles, copping licks and production styles from numerous other bands. Some of it's kind of fun, like the wispy soft pop of "Talking To The Flowers," the fuzz-toned bounciness of "Finding It Rough," and the fresh-faced psychedelia of "Mary Jane." Some of the more overt plagiarism is less appealing, such as the Neil Diamond-y "Deliver Me," and their choice of "Whiter Shade Of Pale" as a cover tune is an almost-but-not-quite misfire. Although they sound palpably anxious and willing to latch onto something, anything that'll bring the fans back, there are still some interesting moments on here... The album is unsatisfying, but some of the songs are a real treat.
(Available through Collector's Choice Music.)

Hey Jody, do you have "That's Just Too Much" by the Everlys?

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Monday, 11 July 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

i'm not sure. ysi?

president carter loves repetition (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 11 July 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

I don't have it! It was on Keith Richards' DID list, though, and I've wanted to hear it ever since. Haven't forced myself to buy the UK import it's on yet.

Teehee, awesome. First Bimble buys Empires and Dance because of me and now this. If I could only get someone else to acquire Breathless - The Glass Bead Game or maybe Scritti Politti's Early compilation and Songs to Remember then I'd feel orgasmic.

Ian Riese-Moraine: that obscure object of desire. (Eastern Mantra), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

Well, I've already got 'Songs to Remember' (on vinyl), if it helps.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

That Kristofferson song is so sleazy and great. I always imagine he's singing about himself in the 3rd person.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

ian, i already knew the pylon song, so don't give yourself too much credit. :-P

but you referencing it has made me pogo around the apartment going "we eeattt dub for breakfAHHHHST!!"
